The first Olympic Games were held at Olympia 0 Greece in 776 BC. The Games were small and there 1 just one race. It was a 185 metre running race called the Stade, and a cook named Koroibus was the first person to win it. In the race, the athletes ran 2 a straight pieceof track. They didnt run 3 a stadium as they do today. The Games were very popular and took place regularly, so gradually they introducednew races.

The Games werent international as they are today. The organizers didnt allow 4 from outside Greece to compete. They didnt 5 to allow women to compete either, but later theyintroduced separate games for women. While they 6 preparing for the Games, the athletes trained hard. They used 7 train for ten months before the Games. The athletes were very popular and 8 in the country respected them. In those days, there were a lot of wars, but while the athletes were travelling to and from the Games, the fighting stopped. This was because 9 was allowed to hurt the athletes. In AD 393, the emperor, Theodocious I, banned the Games, but in the 19th century, 10 Frenchman called Pierre de Coubertin revived them. The first modern Olympic Games took place in Athens on 5 April 1896.
