PUBLIC HOLIDAYS IN THIS TERM AND ITS SIGNIFICANCE IN OUR COUNTRY: 9 th of August, National Women's Day, is a South African public holiday celebrated annually. The day commemorates the 1956 march of approximately 20 000 women to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to petition against the country's pass laws that required South Africans defined as "black" under The Population Registration Act to carry an internal passport, known as a pass, that served to maintain population segregation, control urbanisation, and manage migrant labour during the apartheid era. The first National Women's Day was celebrated on 9 August 1994. In 2006, a reenactment of the march was staged for its 50th anniversary, with many of the 1956 march veterans.

3RD TERM NEWSLETTER 2016

24 September, Heritage Day, the intention of this holiday is for all South Africans to celebrate their heritage, thediversity of their beliefs and traditions and to remember their struggles against Apartheid.

Various events are staged throughout the country to commemorate this day. "This day is one of our newly createdpublic holidays and its significance rests in recognising aspects of South African culture which are both tangibleand difficult to pin down: creative expression, our historical inheritance, language, the food we eat as well as theland on which we live.

Within a broader social and political context, the day's event are a powerful agent for promulgating a South Africanidentity, fostering reconciliation and promoting the notion that variety is a national asset as opposed to ignitingconflict.

Heritage has been defined as "that which we inherit: the sum total of wild life and scenic parks, sites of scientific orhistorical importance, national monuments, historic buildings, works of art, literature and music, oral traditions andmuseum collections together with their documentation."
