Third Sunday of Easter April 30, 2017

“Lord Jesus, open the Scriptures to us;

make our hearts burn while you speak to us.” Cf. Lk 24:32

Dear Parishioners,

This Monday, May 1, 2017, we begin the Month of May, the Month of Mary. Our Blessed Mother is united with us all throughout

these days of Easter Time. When the weeks of Easter come to a close

at Pentecost, we will be intimately united with Mary and the Apostles

in the Upper Room praying with deep faith for a new outpouring of

the Holy Spirit from the Father and his Risen Son. The Church en-

courages expressions of devotion to the Blessed Mother all the time.

However, May stands out as a special period of devotion. In fact, this

May 13th, the Church throughout the world, honors our Blessed Moth-

er under the title of Our Lady of Fatima as we observe the 100th anni-

versary of her apparition to the three young children in that town.

Please see elsewhere in the Parish Bulletin the Fatima anniversary

observances here at the Cathedral Basilica. I encourage you to turn to

Mary with greater frequency this Month of May. Pick up her Rosary

more often. Pray the time honored prayers asking for Mary’s inter-

cession, especially the Memorare and the Regina Coeli. If you are

having trouble recalling these prayers, they are easily found on the

internet. Above all, May is the time for May Processions in honor of

Mary. The Archdiocesan May Procession will take place next Sunday in the Basilica at 2:00 PM. Everyone is welcome!

Next weekend, the relics of Padre Pio will be presented at the Ca-thedral Basilica. The Archdiocese is the first stop for this tour of the

relics of this wonderful Saint which will continue throughout the

United States after this weekend. Please see the insert in this edition

of the Parish Bulletin for more complete information. Help spread the

word to others about this opportunity to venerate the relics of Padre

Pio and to ask for his heavenly help to live more fully the Christian

life.

The Augustinian Fathers have introduced the cause for Beatifica-

tion and Canonization of the Servant of God, Father William Atkin-son, OSA. The Archbishop formally opened this Cause this past Mon-

day, April 24, 2017 at Saint Thomas of Villanova Parish in Villanova

(see http://catholicphilly.com/2015/11/news/national-news/sainthood-

cause-for-local-priest-approved-by-u-s-bishops/). One of the places

to announce the Cause of a proposed candidate for Sainthood is the

Cathedral Church. If anyone has any material that argues favorably or unfavorably for the reputation of holiness of Father Atkinson,

please bring this to my attention. We entrust this Cause to the provi-

dence of Almighty God! The second collection at Mass next Sunday will be the national collection for the Catholic Homes Missions. Thank you so very much

for all of your goodness and generosity to the Cathedral Parish in so

many ways, and to the annual Catholic Charities Appeal.

Happy Easter,

Father Dennis Gill

momento. ¡Despierta y ve!

Sacristy. Your recent donations were very much

appreciated.

Thank you for your continued generosity,

The First Friday Devotion

“Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is of great

antiquity in the Church. It was St. Margaret Mary Alacoque,

however, who made this devotion widespread... To those who show him love and who make reparation for sins,

however, our Lord made a great pledge: ‘I promise you in

the unfathomable mercy of my heart that my omnipotent

love will procure the grace of final penitence for all those

who receive communion on nine successive first Fridays of

the month; they will not die in my disfavor, or without

having received the sacraments, since my divine heart will

be their sure refuge in the last moments of their life.’4

The great promise of the Sacred Heart is most consoling:

the grace of final perseverance and the joy of having Jesus'

heart as our sure refuge and infinite ocean of mercy in our

last hour.

To gain this grace, we must:

♦ Receive holy Communion on nine consecutive first

Fridays.

♦ Have the intention of honoring the Sacred Heart of Jesus

and of reaching final perseverance.

♦ Offer each holy Communion as an act of atonement for

offenses against the Blessed Sacrament.” .

4. lbid. Source: catholicnewsagency.com

The First Five Saturdays Devotion (First Saturday of Five Consecutive Months)

This devotion has four parts which should be made in a

spirit of reparation for the offenses and blasphemies

committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary and for

peace in the world:

♦ Confession, generally eight days before or after the First

Saturday of the month.

♦ Receive Holy Communion (in the state of grace)

♦ Recite five decades of the Rosary. ♦ Meditate for 15 minutes on the mysteries of the Holy

Rosary.

LIVING STEWARDSHIP NOW

EYES WIDE OPEN

Only Saint Luke tells the story of two disciples

walking to Emmaus, and it is full of puzzling gaps.

While all the other disciples and Jesus’ mother were in

Jerusalem trying to understand the amazing fact of the

Resurrection, why were these two hurrying out of town?

Only one is named—Cleopas. Who was the other? A

friend, a brother, a cousin or, perhaps, Cleopas’ wife?

The two were going over the terrible events in Jerusalem

during the previous days when they were joined by a

stranger who asked what they were talking about. He

listened intently to their story, and then explained what

had happened to Jesus in the larger context of the Jewish

scriptures. But these two were too blinded by grief to

realize who the stranger was. When they reached the vil-

lage it was late, so they persuaded him to come into the

house, which we may guess was either this couple’s

home or a relative’s. The culmination of the story occurs

when they sit down for a meal and Jesus breaks bread

and gives thanks, at which moment “their eyes were

opened” and they knew their guest was the Lord (Luke

24:31). It was not just that they opened their eyes, but

they were awakened to a whole new reality. Perhaps that

is just the point. God’s grace falls on us in the midst of

dinner or as we hurry down the road, trying to get away.

God’s grace falls on us smack dab in the everyday, ordi-

nary moments, in the plain and simple struggles to under-

stand, through conversations in the checkout line, at the

bedside of a sick relative, during phone calls and driving

the car to pick up or deposit the kids. The Emmaus story

says that God is alive, right now, in every moment. Wake

up and see!

Living Stewardship Now

Make a promise to yourself to notice the goodness

and presence of God in the everyday miracles of your

life, however small or great.
