Our parish will celebrate a Christmas Eve Mass in the
chapel at the San Alfonso Retreat House at 4:30 p.m.

Redemptorist priests of San Al-
fonso have graciously welcomed

at the former Stella Maris property
is not available this year. We are
very grateful to the new owners of
the Stella Maris property who al-
lowed us to use the chapel there
several
times dur-
ing the
past two
years including Christmas Eve
2016 and 2017. Fr. Butler and Fr.
Wallace (Rector of San Alfonso)
will be the concelebrants of this
year’s 4:30 Christmas Eve Mass.
All are welcome; seating will be
limited to approximately 175
worshipers.

Christmas Luncheon
The ladies of the Altar Rosary Society held their
Annual Christmas Luncheon this past Wednesday at
the Deal Golf & Country Club. It was a festive and
very well attended occasion. The Rosarians invited
Fr. Mark and Fr. John to join them as their guests.
Please see the photo below. All women of the par-
ish are always welcome to join this very important
organization that quietly and excellently serves
many of the needs of our parish. For more infor-
mation, please contact Dotty O’Hara at (908)310-

Blessing of Christmas Creche,
Prayers, and Carols Next Saturday
The parish’s new Christmas

to the people of the parish and
the community in memory of
Rosa
Alba Stranieri from Rosa’s
family. Next Saturday the
22nd immediately after the
5:00 p.m. Mass we will gather
at the Creche to bless and dedi-
cate it,
to pray
for Rosa’s eternal rest, and to

and participate.

Parish Volunteers’ Christmas Dinner
The parish held its Annual Volunteers’ Christmas Dinner on December 9 in the Lower Church after the 4:00 p.m.
Mass. Thank you to our volunteers who worked so hard to put this evening together, and thank you to all our volunteers
who serve and support our parish! In addition, members of the Parish Youth Group (accompanied by Youth Group Di-
rector Jamie Plantamura) visited the rectory to help decorate Fr. John’s and Fr. Mark’s Christmas tree. Please see the
accompanying photos.
Similar to the prior week’s Advent talk by Fr. Bob Pagliari, this past
Wednesday’s Advent talk by Fr. Pablo Gadenz was also excellent and
very well attended. Fr. Gadenz shared numerous insights on Luke’s Gos-
pel especially on the authorship, themes, and language subtleties of this
Gospel. He focused on the “Infancy Narrative” (the story of the birth of
Jesus) that we find in Luke’s second chapter: “…She wrapped Him in
swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger because there was no room
for them in the inn.” Copies of Fr. Gadenz’s new book The Gospel
of Luke and Fr. Pagliari’s new book Holy Homework (very fine
Christmas gifts!) will continue to be available for purchase in the
parish office through Thursday, Dec. 20. The price for each book is
$15.00 and may be paid in cash or by check. Please see the accom-
panying photos of the talks, book signings, and receptions.

The Christmas Wafer:
The “Oplatki”
The word Bethlehem
means “House of Bread”.
The breaking of bread is a
sign of charity, unity,
friendship, and hospitality.
Religious family traditions
and customs bring the
truths of Faith into the
home. One of these beauti-
ful Christmas customs is
the Christmas Wafer. A
wafer bearing a simple de-
sign commemorative of Christ’s birth is broken by
the head of the family and distributed to each mem-
ber. With a simple prayer for God’s grace and the
welfare of the present and absent members of the
family, the head family member breaks the wafer
and distributes it, a piece to each one at the table.
While doing so each member of the family is kissed
and is wished a joyful feast. The other family
members then greet one another in the same way.
The spiritual lesson in this age old custom is
unity of the family – the main pillar of society.
The bond of unity is the Christ-like charity that
should exist amongst the members of the family.
The father of the family is the link in the unbroken
chain of One Body, One Bread, One Christ, and
One Church. The mother of the family is the sym-
bol of Mary-the Blessed Mother: a symbol of love,
maternal care, self-sacrifice, spiritual teacher. The
family joins in the eternal procession no matter
where they are. For there is a universal longing by
men to be always with one another, with God.
All this brings to mind clearly our charity for
one another, to seek salvation together. Family cus-
toms remind us that we seek and obtain salvation
with the help of others at all times.
The Christmas Oplatki Wafers are available at
no charge in the vestibule of the church beginning
on this the Third Sunday of Advent. Please share
one (or two) with your family.

that those who have a hearing deficit might hear more
clearly. Please ask an usher for assistance.

Mass on Sunday, Dec. 16
For the young adults and youth of our parish a Mass
has been added to our regular schedule on the third
Sunday of each month at 6:00 p.m. in the Upper
Church. All will of course be welcomed to attend – and
participate at! – these “Young Adult and Youth Mass-
es” at which the hymns (as well as the Gloria and Re-
sponsorial Psalm and Gospel Verse) will be traditional
and appropriate but with a more up-beat tempo that will
help lift minds, voices, and hearts to God; the musical
instruments will include an electronic keyboard and gui-
tar and will be located in and be very visible from the
sanctuary; the singers/vocalists will also be in the sanc-
tuary and face-to-face with the congregation; and the
homily will relate the Scripture readings of the day to
current and contemporary concerns and experiences of
our young adults and youth. Our next monthly Young
Adult and Youth* Masses will be celebrated on Sunday,
December 16 and Sunday, January 20 at 6:00 p.m. Please pass the word and join us and bring a friend or
two! Refreshments, hospitality, and fellowship will
follow in the Lower Church immediately following this
Mass.
* Incidentally, some may ask what we mean by “young
adults and youth”….we leave that up to you (and, again,
ALL are welcome and invited to these Masses) but for
the sake of “providing a number” let’s say the phrase
applies to those in their mid/late teens and in their 20s
and 30s and to the young and youthful at heart.

+AMDG+
It was the “Yes” not just heard around the world, but throughout all creation and all time. Of
all the decisions ever made by any individual man or woman, organization or government, none
has impacted the fate and condition of humanity remotely as much as her simple fiat voluntas.
By freely giving God permission to enter the world through her womb, Mary welcomed our
rightful king and savior, Jesus Christ, the Son of God. He came to defeat the prince of darkness
and death itself, thereby restoring our relationship as loving children with our Heavenly Father.
As we approach Christmas, let’s not limit ourselves to sentimental memories, but instead offer
allegiance to our king. Like Mary at the Annunciation, we are invited to say “yes” to letting
Jesus Christ in and then to bringing Him to our world.
Mary’s response was quick and complete. Absent of any disordered appetite for enslaving
things of the flesh – like wealth, power, comfort, reputation or pleasure. Mary had the unique
ability to give herself entirely in love without reserve or impediment. While her fiat was final,
ours is often conditional due to sinful attachments, especially to our own opinion and will. Fun-
ny in a world that sometimes (and evilly) equates pregnancy with slavery, Mary’s surrender and pregnancy delivered
lost freedom back to humanity. It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves
be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.
The Catechism teaches that from the beginning God gave us free will so that we might of our own accord seek our
Creator and freely attain our full and blessed perfection by cleaving to him. Sin, in particular habitual sinning, robs us
of our free will making us less human, less of ourselves and less able to hold onto God. And yet, knowing that we con-
tinue to sin, which is to think and act without God’s love as our guide. Like me, I am sure you regret your sins.
Advent provides a grace-filled time of hope to carry on our battle with our personal weaknesses so that we are better
prepared for Christ’s coming. Once thought of as “little Lent,” we fast to direct our hunger toward God instead of our
natural desires of the flesh. God gave us these natural desires so they are good, except when we let them control us.
Freedom through fasting from our earthly attentions can enrich our prayer life, strengthen our resolve and bring us clos-
er to God.
Many of us have not prepared for Christmas in this way before, but I think now is a good time to begin. There is no
better gift for Christ than to say, Yes, Lord, your will be done, and to be free of self to make it happen. May the Holy
Spirit guide us all this Advent season.

MARCH FOR LIFE 2019 WASHINGTON D.C.
The March for Life began as a small
demonstration in 1973 and rapidly grew
to be the largest pro-life event in the
world. The peaceful demonstration that
has followed on this somber anniversary
is a witness to the truth concerning the
greatest human rights violation of our
time: abortion. Join us and half a million
pro-lifers as we head once again to Washington, D.C.
on Friday, January 18, 2019 for the 46th annual March
For Life and walk from the Washington Monument up
Constitution Av to the Supreme Court. Always peaceful
and uplifting, The March For Life offers you the oppor-
tunity to stop in at your federal legislators' offices and let
them know how you feel (and how you pray that they will
vote!). Defunding the abortion industry, defund-
ing embryonic stem cell research, voting against "right to
die" and "death with dignity" euthanasia legislation are all
critical parts of this day of peaceful and prayerful witness
and demonstration.
