From the Desk of the Pastor

Dear Parishioners, This weekend we welcome Fr. Frank Desiderio. His homily at all the Masses this weekend will more than explain the content of our Lenten Mission. Here is a brief bio of our mission director: Frank Desiderio, C.S.P. served as President of Paulist Productions and is the Chairman of The HUMANITAS Prize. He is also a member of the Paulist Fathers, an American religious order in the Catholic Church. As President of Paulist Productions, he executive produced documentaries, movies for television and video content for internet distribution. As Executive Producer, Fr. Desiderio's credits include the ABC/Paramount movie Judas, which aired on ABC Television. He launched Paulist Production's new webisode series Tyler's Ride in the spring of 2008. His latest documentary film, The Big Question: A Film about Forgiveness premiered at the Sedona International Film Festival and won Best Documentary at the Breckenridge Film Festival and Santa Fe Metaphysical Film Festival. His work on this film launched him into his current ministry of forgiveness and reconciliation. I hope you are able to make all, or any part of the parish mission. Forgiveness and reconciliation may take a lifetime, but without their healing it is not much of a life. Last night, when you read this on Sunday, was the Teacher Recognition Trust ‘March Gladness’ Gala. Any basketball fan would recognize the play on ‘March Madness’. Many parishes with schools work hard to support the teachers and the entire effort it takes to keep a Catholic school going. However, I have never been part of a parish that is so supportive and affirming of its teachers and that is only possible because of the Teacher Recognition Trust. (It was renamed this year from the ‘Endowment’ in an attempt to be more precise with how the money is actually used and to emphasize the intent of the founders when the fund was established almost 25 years ago.) So because the party hasn’t actually happened as I write this I don’t know exactly how everything turned out. But I anticipate that a good time was had by all, that some were watching the basketball games while the others were more concerned with the auction items (like the jewelry). Thank you for supporting the faculty of our wonderful school and the Teacher’s Recognition Trust. The Fish Fry last week was a grand success. This Friday is the ‘Saintly Seniors’ luncheon for St. Patrick/St. Joseph. Market Day is offering a special this month on pies. Food is a universal gathering point and community builder. May we be refreshed and renewed, forgiven and reconciled each time we gather to celebrate the Breaking of the Bread. Peace, Fr. David

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults: The Three Scrutinies

(Scrutiny #2 to be held next week)

During the season of Lent, the Elect ( those who participate in the Rite of Election with the Bishop at the beginning of Lent are now referred to as the “Elect”) enter into the “Period of Purification and Enlightenment.” Our Elect – Glenn Aldridge – participates in a total of three Scrutiny's, which are spiritual rites that will help him look deeper into his life, to see the sin that exists, to seek repentance, and to grow in his desire to follow Christ and love God. “The Scrutinies are meant to uncover, then heal, all that is weak, defective, or sinful in the hearts of the Elect; to bring out, then strengthen, all that is upright, strong, and good” (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, 141). As a

part of the Scrutinies, the rite of exorcism is also celebrated in order to free the Elect from the effects of sin and strengthen them as they continue their spiritual journey. These rites remind each of us that we, too, need to look into our own hearts, to see where sin is present, and to seek Christ’s loving forgiveness. Lent is a time in which we are all invited to strengthen our love of God and prepare our hearts for the great gift of Easter. Please join us for one of the remaining Scrutinies that are celebrated as a part of the Sunday liturgy (the First Scrutiny took place last Sunday, March 4th at the 9 a.m. Mass). The Second Scrutiny will be next Saturday, March 17th at the 5 p.m. Mass. The Third and final Scrutiny will be on Sunday, March 25th at the 5 p.m. Mass. Whether you are able to be present or not, please pray for our Elect – Glenn Aldridge – as he continues his journey to Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist at our Easter Vigil. Pray also, please, for Bruce Harken—our Candidate For Full Communion. Baptized Presbyterian years ago, Bruce has decided to spend the rest of his life as a Roman Catholic. He will be received into the Catholic Church at our Easter Vigil Mass which means he will make a Profession of the Catholic Faith and then will be confirmed and receive Eucharist for the first time.

Sunday, Third Week of Lent

Let the Path Teach You

Each week we are proud to share a Lenten Reflection from the book, Love that Beckons, by Paula D’Arcy in our bulletin. Paula D’Arcy is an internationally recognized author, retreat leader and speaker. Included among her many books are Gift of the Red Bird, Sacred Threshold, and When People Grieve. Paula will be speaking at The Well on March 31st. See page 8 in today’s bulletin. Also, you are invited to join our Spiritual Journaling group on Mondays at 2:30-4:00 p.m. and read Paula’s Waking Up to This Day to prepare for Paula’s visit. Call the Parish Center for more information.

Love beckons . . . How can I prepare myself to listen to the teachings of radical love—to hear the Spirit’s power in the words spoken by Jesus? If I were going to meet the Divine today, how might I prepare? What gift would I bring? Would I walk forward in deep surrender? What does a person do in preparation for hearing the greatest truths? The Wonders of Life, Great and Small Listening to Deeper Truths The Scientist Galileo went beyond the common knowledge of his day (the Earth is the center of the solar system) and dared to see more than others were yet able to see. For this he was accused of heresy, silenced by the Church and forced to recant what he knew to be true. The abolitionists who opposed the prevailing mind-set that sanctioned slavery also found themselves in opposition to the powerful leaders of their day. In particular, William Wilberforce of Great Britain and Harriet Tubman in America risked their lives and their livelihood to speak truths that were not yet part of the general consciousness of their time. Jesus walked the same path; He spoke truths so foreign to contemporary ears that the common multitudes rose up in protest. The lives of his historical followers illuminate our own great challenge: How can I (or will I) get past my own resistance and prior conclusions in order to hear the deeper truths? What will help me move past my own version of life into the full and deep expression of Spirit in life? Today: I pray for courage to heed the truths that beckon me.

HOLY THURSDAY PILGRIMAGE We would like to resurrect an old tradition of the Catholic Church—going on pilgrimage to pray at neighboring Churches after our Holy Thursday Mass. A bus would be rented and we would travel to three of our nearby Catholic Churches (at about 8:45 p.m.) to pray before the Blessed Sacrament before returning to our own Church (by 11 p.m.) for some final prayer. On the bus, we would pray our primary prayers so when we arrive at each neighboring Church we can silently pray and not disturb the quiet of the night and other visitors’ personal prayer. As you probably know, most Catholic Churches around the world are open for prayer until midnight on Holy Thursday. If you are interested in this pilgrimage, reserve your space on the bus by filling out the form below, clipping it out and returning it to the Parish Center (or drop it in the Sunday Offertory Basket) before March 19th so we can make the necessary arrangements. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Yes, I would like to be part of St. John of the Cross’s bus pilgrimage to neighboring Churches on Holy Thursday night, April 5th, from approximately 8:45 p.m. to 11 p.m. Name:_________________________________________________ Phone:________________________________________________ Number of people riding the bus:___________________________ Please return this form to the Parish Center (or drop it in the Sunday Offertory Basket) by March 19th.

The Lenten Outreach Project for all SJC Parishioners and all SJC Youth Catechesis and Parish School students is Operation Rice Bowl. Operation Rice Bowl is the official Lenten Program of Catholic Relief Services. Participation in Operation Rice Bowl is a way to respect human dignity and foster solidarity with the poor around the world. Operation Rice Bowl begins now and continues until Palm Sunday, April 1st. Extra Rice Bowls are available in the Parish Center. Operation Rice Bowl is an extremely interactive approach to living the traditional Lenten disciplines of Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving. 75% of your gifts will help fund Catholic Relief Services’ development projects around the world, in countries such as Madagascar, Vietnam, El Salvador, Zambia and India. 25% of your gifts support hunger and poverty alleviation efforts in dioceses in the United States. Go to our parish website to download a Lenten calendar, Rice Bowl placemat, weekly Lenten Reflections, and a special video and recipe from each featured country. Families may also find special Rice Bowl activities planned just for them on our website.

This Week’s Featured Country: El Salvador Maria Idalia Serrano lives with her husband and four children in El Pedregal, El Salvador. Most of her days revolved around collecting water. She went back and forth to the river five times each day to get water for cooking, cleaning, and drinking. She never thought about whether this water was safe to drink. They didn’t have a choice. Water from the river was all they had. A few years ago CRS helped build a well in her village. Now 130 families in El Pedregal have faucets that bring clean water right to their homes. Now Maria can spend more time with her children to watch and guide them. CRS taught them how to use water purifying pills to make sure that their water is safe to drink. Now, she and her husband volunteer with CRS to teach their neighbors that using purified water can help prevent health problems. Everyone has the right to clean, safe drinking water. Water is everything; water is health.

Catholic Social Teaching: Rights and Responsibilities

Catholic Relief Services’ water and sanitation projects in El Salvador and around the world help bring clean water to families and communities. Every person has basic rights including the right to life, food, water, and shelter. We also have the responsibility to support the rights of others. Pray that through our sacrifices this Lent we help others access their basic human rights.

All are encouraged to add and share their own prayer on our parish website for those who are hungry and poor around the world. Journey with us this Lent.

Kolbe House Online Lenten Retreat A Lenten retreat that fits perfectly with busy schedules. Each Monday in Lent, you will receive an email that contains a reflection prepared by a Kolbe House chaplain or volunteer who ministers to youth detained at the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center. The theme: Listening: Quieting ourselves to the presence of God, will be presented through the Lenten Sunday scriptures and questions for reflection. The response and commitment to the retreat is strictly up to each individual. A simple email to [email protected] is all that is required to participate. No other obligation is asked.

Stations of the Cross Fridays at 6:00 p.m. in church throughout Lent. Led by parish families, praying the stations is appropriate for all ages. Taizé Prayer Friday, March 23 - following Stations in our church, join in Taizé Prayer, an ecumenical form of prayer consisting of song, scripture, light and meditation.

Pray the Labyrinth Walk the Labyrinth and find a deeper place as you journey within. Saturday, March 24 from 2:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. in the Parish Center. Family Rosary Thursdays in Lent (except Holy Thursday) 6:30 p.m. in the Community Room.

What is Taizé Prayer? Taizé Prayer is a liturgy filled with song, scripture and silent meditation. The sanctuary is candlelit, making a space that is ready for meditative silence and song. The music of Taizé is repetitive and chant-like. The simple melodies wed to simple texts enable you to easily enter into the prayer and enter into a place of profound meditation. The service quickly grabs your intellect and promises to renew your spirit.

What is a Labyrinth? The labyrinth is an archetype, a divine imprint, found in all religious traditions in various forms around the world. By walking a replica of the Chartres labyrinth, laid in the floor of Chartres Cathedral in France around 1220, we are rediscovering a long-forgotten mystical tradition.

The labyrinth has only one path so there are no tricks to it and no dead ends. The path winds throughout and becomes a mirror for where we are in our lives. It touches our sorrows and releases our joys. Pray and meditate as you walk it with an open mind and an open heart. To learn more go to our parish website under the Prayer tab.

Paula D’Arcy Healing our World from the Inside Out: A Day of Retreat March 31 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. What better way to enter Holy Week than to pause and take a deeper look at the way we are all living our lives? What happens when we stop believing that change will only happen “out there,” and begin to realize that we are the world, and healing begins from the inside out? The day promises to be reflective, informative and transformative. Paula D’Arcy is a well known writer, playwright, retreat leader and conference and seminar speaker. Attendees are asked to bring $8 for lunch that day.

Notes on Staying Well from our School Nurse, Laurie Peterson RN

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) recently notified our parish school of a case of pertussis (whooping cough) within our school community. This case is under control and the individual has recovered. We were able to notify school families and give them helpful advice. Because pertussis has been a concern throughout the fall and winter in the Chicago and suburban areas we feel it would be helpful to share recent recommendations from the IDPH wi th the par ish members . Traditionally, children are given the series of vaccines known as DPT (diptheria, pertussis, and tetanus) and this was thought to provide life-long immunity to pertussis. It has been determined that the pertussis immunity is NOT life-long but is waning. A booster of "Tdap" (Tetanus, diptheria, and acellular pertussis) is available. It is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED that all persons age 10 years old and older, including adults, receive this import vaccine booster. Tdap replaces the usual tetanus booster. ALL students entering 6th and 9th grade MUST have the Tdap vaccine BEFORE school begins this fall (2012-2013 school year) to avoid exclusion per the Illinois School Code. Having all eligible persons vaccinated provides protection for infants and small children still going through the initial vaccine process. These infants and small children are most susceptible to this disease which can be fatal to infants. Please help form a cocoon around those needing protection by consulting with your physician about your need for the Tdap vaccine.

Spring is on the way …even though it doesn’t feel like we’ve had winter yet !

CAN YOU SPARE SOME TIME TO HELP TEND THE GARDENS AT SJC ??

Please consider joining the St. John of the Cross Gardening Angels. We’ve become quite an established group, but are always in need of extra hands to help keep the gardens at SJC watered, weeded, and well- manicured. Many hands make for light work ! Our season begins with a Spring Clean-Up day (sometime before Easter - if weather permits) and goes through November. We have had success with scheduling gardening buddy groups on a once per week basis for a two hour shift – weather permitting - during the summer months, with the Autumn schedule being somewhat less intense. Can’t make a weekly commitment? We would love to add your name to a list of volunteers that could be contacted on an "as-needed" basis for special projects requiring more "muscle" than the regular week to week gardening shifts. The award winning documentary The Big Question tells stories of heroes who have overcome great hurts and become greater human beings. Watch the movie in church on Monday, March 12 at 7:00 p.m.

Everyone says let go, but nobody tells you how.

Now someone does. The Film, Monday, March 12, 7:00 p.m. in church

Astonishing acts of forgiveness set the stage, with insight from scientists and some of the greatest spiritual leaders of our time.

The Event, March 13 and 14, 7:00 p.m. in church Rev. Frank Desiderio, teacher and spiritual guide, provides the tools,

guiding participants through the five steps to LET GO. The Result

Healing through the spiritual path of forgiveness.

When it comes to forgiving a person who has wronged you, so many people say, “just let go,” but rarely do they tell you how. The Letting Go of a Grudge Parish Mission gives participants the basic tools and steps to find healing through forgiveness. This mission will benefit people who need to let go of old hurts and raging resentments, which will subsequently allow them to move forward in their life. Fr. Frank’s homily at Mass this weekend focuses on what forgiveness is and is not and why we don’t forgive: Anger, Justice and Revenge. On Monday evening, March 12 the award winning documentary, The Big Question, will be shown. This film tells stories of people who have overcome great hurts and become greater human beings. The film examines the scientific evidence of why forgiveness is good for you and talks with some of the greatest spiritual teachers of our time. Fr. Desiderio will use the film as a basis for Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, March 13 and 14, when he will lead parishioners through the five steps of letting go of hurt, anger, resentment and revenge and will present ways for them to become more forgiving in their own lives, community, nation and world. A Forgiveness Ritual will help parishioners have a transformational experience. All evening sessions on March 12-14 will be in church at 7:00 p.m. Go to our parish website to learn more and see a preview of the movie.

PARISH LENTEN MISSION ON FORGIVENESS begins today at Mass and continues on

Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. in church.

Babysitting in the Parish Center is available for all three evening sessions. There is no charge, but you must register your child(ren) by calling the Parish Center. 708.246.4404
