From the Parish Office:
Thank you to all who
donated their time and
talents for another
successful MCREST year!
MCREST Guests Leave Today “You have been a refuge for the poor, a refuge for the needy in their distress, a shelter from
the storm and a shade from the heat.”

Christian Service Needs Gift Basket Items for
St. Baldrick Fundraiser
Christian Service is in
need of several items to
make gift baskets for
an upcoming raffle
available to our parish-
ioners. Please place your donation
in the box located in the gathering
area labeled “basket raffle”. These
baskets will raise money for the St.
Baldrick's fundraiser hosted in our
home community of Romeo. This is
a new project for our parish, so we
are really in need of everyone’s
support. Once these items are
collected we will be in need of
volunteers to help assemble the
baskets and to sell tickets after
Masses in February. Please contact
Christian Service at 586-651-0734
to volunteer your time and talents.
S.O.S. Ministry Thank You
Wishing you and all your loved ones all the wonder and
magic of Christmas. You are “wonderful” dong God’s work.
God Bless
Thank You from Hope Network Pastoral Services
On behalf of Hope Network Pastoral Services and the
individuals we serve, please accept our heartfelt gratitude
for your participation in the 2018 Hope Network Gift of
Hope program this past Christmas season. With the
generosity and kindness of partners like you, nearly 800
individuals living in Hope Network facilities throughout
Michigan were blessed to receive at least one Christmas gift
with their name on it. One gift may not seem like much, but for those
without family support it truly made a difference between making it a
Christmas to remember or a Christmas to forget.
God bless you for your partnership. We could not do this work without
you. We pray that 2019 will be a year filled with many blessings.
~Best Regards & Blessings in the New Year, The Hope Network Pastoral
Services Team

FEAR MEETS HOPE By Deacon Kurt Godfryd
In 1938, a young Spaniard traveled to Japan where he worked as a medic, teacher, and
counselor for more than a quarter of a century. One date, however, forever divided those years:
August 6, 1945. For, at 8:15 in the morning, he was tending to his responsibilities in Hiroshima
when a single B-29 airplane flew over the city and dropped the bomb that killed nearly 80,000
people and injured at least that many more.
The Spaniard’s name was Fr. Pedro Arrupe, S.J. Immediately, he began using his medical
skills and compassion to minister to the tragically burned and frightened victims. Although he
had nothing to do with the decision to bomb Hiroshima (and Nagasaki), he profoundly felt its
impact. For Arrupe, that August morning provided an image of a frightened and disfigured world. Years later, as
religious leader of the worldwide Society of Jesus (Jesuits), he became known throughout the world as a man of
hope, urging each of us to examine the roots of infection that cause such havoc and to tend to the wounds of our
world according to our talents and opportunities. (Adapted from Faith and Justice: Living as Christians on a
Small Planet, Sr. Margaret Betz, St. Mary’s Press, 1980, pp. 54)
At the beginning of his ministry to the Japanese people, I am certain that Fr. Arrupe could not have imagined
that which occurred on that August day. Likewise, I am convinced that Jesus’ disciples could not have imagined
the events that unfolded before their eyes on that first Good Friday. But let us consider the career path of those
early disciples. Called from their ordinary lifestyles, they joined themselves to Jesus of Nazareth. Day by day,
Jesus taught them, formed them, and performed extraordinary feats in their midst. But if we remember, Jesus
also told them that the Son of Man would be required to suffer and die. And while this was not what the disciples
wanted to hear, this is precisely what they were treated to on Good Friday.
But unlike Hiroshima, there was not massive death and destruction. Rather, they found themselves on the Via
Dolorosa, a dusty road that would end in Jesus' death on a Cross. Their eyes witnessed the beatings and
scourging. Their ears beheld the jeers of the crowd that had assembled as though for a parade. But in the back of
their minds, they remembered what Jesus told them: “A disciple is not above his teacher, but every one, when he
is fully taught will be like his teacher.” (Luke 6:40) Nevertheless, we know that out of fear, most of the first
followers of Jesus left that blessed crime scene.
These many years later, each of us ponders the mystery of the Cross in our lives. For the Cross is always before
us, as a reminder. Regarding its importance, St. Paul reminds us: “For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek
wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are
called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.” (1 Cor 22:24)
Yes, the Cross is always before us. But even in life’s disappointments and tragedies, we should be not afraid to
join ourselves to it. With God’s grace, may we bravely carry it! And when we do, we shall find a hope so great that
we cannot even describe its joy. For we will have found Jesus---present in our lives! In Fr. Arrupe’s case, he met
fear with hope. And through that hope, he became Jesus’ eyes, hands, arms, and feet for the suffering masses. For
us, too, may we ask Jesus how we might join our suffering to His. By doing so, we will have joined our very selves
to His eternal sacrifice.
Presentation of the Lord
Jesus is the Messiah who institutes a new covenant
with his people, but he was raised as a practicing Jew
by his devout parents. Jewish tradition held that
firstborn male children were to be presented at the
Temple and a sacrifice offered 40 days after his birth.
Luke's Gospel tells the story of this sacred event.
Simeon, a priest of the temple, prophetically greets the
Holy Family. "Now let your servant go in peace, my
eyes have seen salvation which you have prepared in
the site of all peoples." On this feast, we remember
that Jesus does not come to abolish the traditions of
the past but to fulfill them. His sacrifice on the cross
and establishment of the Church lay the foundation for
new traditions that continue to bring life to us today!

A Family Perspective
In today’s gospel Jesus was
“praised by all” except at home in
Nazareth where the “eyes of all were
intently on him.” Acceptance can be
hard to find at home due to unreal
EXPECTATIONS. Jesus challeng-
es us to “proclaim liberty” to anyone
“oppressed” or “captive” by our
EXPECTATIONS. ~ Bud Ozar

Giving ALL
Many years ago,
when I worked as a
volunteer at a
hospital, I got to know
a little girl named Liz who was
suffering from a rare & serious
disease. Her only chance of
recover appeared to be a blood
transfusion from her 5-year old
brother, who had miraculously
survived the same disease and had
developed the antibodies needed to
combat the illness. The doctor
explained the situation to her little
brother, and asked the little boy if
he would be willing to give his
blood to his sister. I saw him
hesitate for only a moment before
taking a deep breath and saying,
“Yes I’ll do it if it will save her.”
As the transfusion progressed, he
lay in bed next to his sister and
smiled, as we all did, seeing the
color returning to her cheek. Then
his face grew pale and his smile
faded. He looked up at the doctor
and asked with a trembling voice,
“Will I die right away, or how
soon?” The boy had misunderstood
the doctor; he thought he would
have to give his sister all of his
blood in order to save her.

Mercy Nights
Jesus can do great things in your life. Don't believe us? Come to a Mercy
Night. Let Him prove it. Let's be honest, life is full of baggage. So often we
are expected to "go at it alone" or "tough it out". Doesn't that seem counter-
productive? What if, instead, we didn't "go at it alone" but instead we "go
at it with Him"? Real peace and real joy are available and attaina-
ble. Similar to the Come Encounter Christ events, Mercy Nights are about
laying down the things that drain us and hold us down, and receiving free-
dom through the gentle mercy of Jesus. Come and receive life and heal
wounds through the power of scripture and the presence of Jesus as we
encounter him through adoration, reconciliation and music. All are wel-
come to join the Franciscan Friars of the Holy Spirit for an evening of life
changing mercy and encounter with Jesus.
