Our Lady of Altagracia Celebration Our parish's annual celebration for Our Lady of Altagracia, the patronal image and protectress for the people of the Dominican Republic is being celebrated this weekend. Alfonso and Antonio Trejo, who were among the first group of 16th century European settlers of the island that would become known as the Dominican Republic, brought this Marian portrait from Spain. When the brothers moved to the city of Higuey, they brought this image to the local parish church. The first shrine to Our Lady of Altagracia was completed in 1572 and the present basilica was consecrated in 1971. The cloth painting of Our Lady of Altagracia, which measures 13 by 18 inches, depicts the birth of Jesus with Mary gazing upon her son wearing a blue cloak accompanied by stars and a white scapular. The image of Our Lady of Altagracia has been crowned on two occasions. First, on August 15, 1922 during the pontificate of Pope Pius XI and secondly, on January 25, 1979 during St. Pope John Paul II's apostolic visit to Santo Domingo in which he gave a golden silver tiara as his personal gift to the Virgin Mary. Maria of Altagracia wears the colors of the Dominican flag which may be seen as anticipating the national identity of the country of the Dominican Republic. Dominicans view this image of Mary as exemplifying her watching over this Caribbean island as its protectress and fostering the growth of Christianity in that nation.

Feeding Our Neighbors Nearly 325,000 children or 22% of children in the 10 counties of the Archdiocese of New York have difficulty affording food. As a way to assist those who are in need, our parish will be participating in Feeding Our Neighbors, an archdiocesan-wide food drive to replenish dwindling food pantries from January 24 to January 31. Donations of canned and dry good products may be dropped off in specially marked boxes in the church and parish pastoral center.

Food pantries and soup kitchens are in need of items such as canned items (vegetables, fruits, meat, fish, beans, soups), grains (rice, pasta/noodles, dry and hot cereal, crackers) peanut butter, dry milk products, nutritional beverages (Boost, Ensure, Carnation Instant Breakfast), spices, coffee and tea. Whatever assistance

you are able to offer will be greatly appreciated.

Social Action Committee Meeting The Social Action Committee invites all to participate in a follow-up meeting to our Advent gathering "We Are All Immigrants" on Sunday January 24th at 11:30am at the St. John-Visitation Parish Pastoral Center. The conversation will continue about welcoming immigrants and refugees, praying and taking action. Translation will be available.

2015 Parish Contribution Statements St. John-Visitation registered parishioners who make use of the weekly parish support envelopes and would like to obtain an official parish contribution statement for 2015 are asked to contact the parish office. Since there was a parish merger last year, D.P. Murphy will be mailing out contribution statements to those who made use of the Visitation Parish weekly support envelopes (January-August 2015). For those who were formerly registered at Visitation Parish and registered at St. John-Visitation Parish with new envelopes, you may be receiving two contribution statements.

Did You Know? The Conversion of St. Paul the Apostle is celebrated annually on January 25th, one month after the Nativity of Jesus and also concludes the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. The conversion account of Saul, who bitterly opposed and fiercely persecuted Christians and would later become known as Paul the missionary apostle to the Gentiles, is described three times in the Acts of the Apostles (9:1-22; 22:3-16; 26:2-18). In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, his conversion story epitomizes how God's mercy and grace can transform

our lives.

2016 Cardinal's Annual Stewardship Appeal This weekend is the official kickoff of the 2016 Cardinal’s Annual Stewardship Appeal. There are so many reasons why this annual appeal is important, not only to those in need in the archdiocese, but also to us, in our parish community. Your support helps countless people, and sustains the fabric of our ministries throughout our parishes. If you have not yet already received the mailing, you will be receiving a letter from Cardinal Dolan, along with materials that illustrate the deep importance of the Cardinal’s Appeal. Part of being a steward means living with trust in God’s generosity and responsibly tending that which God has entrusted to us. Cardinal Dolan is asking you to participate by making a gift to this important annual initiative.

Celebración de Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia Celebración anual de nuestra parroquia de Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia, la imagen patronal y protectora para el pueblo de la República Dominicana se celebra este fin de semana. Alfonso y Antonio Trejo, que estaban entre el primer grupo de colonos europeos del siglo 16 de la isla que se conocería como la República Dominicana, trajo este retrato Marian de España. Cuando los hermanos se trasladaron a la ciudad de Higüey, trajeron esta imagen a la parroquia local. El primer santuario dedicado a Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia se completó en 1572 y la actual basílica fue consagrada en 1971. La pintura de tela de Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia, que mide 13 por 18 pulgadas, representa el nacimiento de Jesús con María contemplando a su hijo que llevaba una capa azul acompañado de estrellas y un escapulario blanco. La imagen de Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia ha sido coronada en dos ocasiones. En primer lugar, el 15 de agosto 1922 durante el pontificado del Papa Pío XI y en segundo lugar, el 25 de enero 1979, durante la visita

apostólica de San Papa Juan Pablo II a Santo Domingo, en la que dio una tiara de plata de oro como regalo personal a la Virgen María. María de la Altagracia lleva los colores de la bandera dominicana que se pueden considerar como una anticipación de la identidad nacional del país de la República Dominicana. Dominicanos ver esta imagen de María como ejemplo de su observación sobre esta isla del Caribe como su protectora y fomentar el crecimiento del cristianismo en esa nación. Alimentar Nuestros Vecinos Casi 325.000 niños o el 22% de los niños en los 10 condados de la Arquidiócesis de Nueva York tienen dificultad para pagar por comida. Como una manera de ayudar a aquellos que están en necesidad, nuestra parroquia estará participando en Alimentar Nuestros Vecinos, una unidad de la arquidiócesis amplia de alimentos para reponer la disminución de las despensas de alimentos a partir de 24 de enero al 31 de enero. Reunión del Comité de Acción Social El Comité de Acción Social invita a todos a participar en una reunión de seguimiento a nuestro Adviento recopilación de "Todos somos inmigrantes", el domingo 24 de enero a las 11:30 am en el Centro Pastoral de la Parroquia San Juan-Visitación. La conversación continuará sobre la bienvenida a los inmigrantes y refugiados, la oración y la acción. Traducción estará disponible.

2015 Declaraciones de Contribución Parroquiales Registrado Feligreses de San Juan-Visitación que hacen uso de los sobres semanales de apoyo parroquial y deseen obtener una declaración oficial de contribución parroquial para 2015 se les pide ponerse en contacto con la oficina parroquial. Como no había una fusión de la parroquia el año pasado, D. P. Murphy enviará por correo declaraciones de contribución a aquellos que hacen uso de los sobres de apoyo semanales de la Iglesia Visitación (enero-agosto 2015).
