BOARD OF DIRECTORSWEVE MADE PROGRESS!

Considerable progress had already been achieved when, two yearsago, I stepped into the presidency. My predecessors have done an ex-ceptional job and I found myself with large shoes to fill. Attempting to doso has been both a challenge and a rewarding experience.

We have maintained a level of 3,200 members despite the loss ofsome of our friends and classmates. Dues income has increased slightlyover the past two years, yet less than one third of our registered alumnimembers actually pay their dues.

Many of our recent reunions have been memorable. The events in2005 and 2006 set a new benchmark, with 88 alumni attending in 2005and 92 in 2006. Future reunions promise to be even better, with moreinvolvement by our alumni and generous support from VWIL.

As this issue of The Kablegram goes to press, our SMA-VWIL MuseumCommittee is meeting to decide the best way to make use of the addi-tional space that has been granted us by Mary Baldwin College. This is animportant step in perpetuating the legacy of SMA.

In April 2004, Bill Kearns handed Dr. Brenda Bryant and Brig. Gen.Michael Bissell a check for $20,000 and pledged that the SMA AlumniAssociation would provide $50,000 a year for discretionary use as long aswe could. That pledge was fulfilled by April 2005, and fulfilled again byApril 2006, each year through the SMA-VWIL Initiative.

Through the Initiative, your association has opened many opportuni-ties for the Corps of Cadets, including new flags, trips to seminars, lead-ership retreats, travel to New York for the annual St. Patricks Day Pa-rade and to Williamsburg for the Inaugural Parade, and an intercom sys-tem between dormitories and the VWIL office. This is but a small sam-pling of benefits the SMA-VWIL Initiative has provided.

VWIL cadets have enjoyed the benefits of a series of annual scholar-ships funded by Hunter W., Henry, Jr., SMA 46 and the SMA AlumniAssociation. Other tuition assistance grants have been provided whenthe circumstances warranted and our help was requested.

Recently, we completed a program that resulted in placing furnitureand computers in seven areas of VWIL that were set aside for cadetoffices and conference rooms, accomplished through private donations .

Without the enthusiastic support of the SMA Alumni Association Boardof Directors, always there when I needed help and guidance, none of ouraccomplishments would have seen the light of day. You our alumni should be very proud of those you elected to guide our organization.

There is no time to rest on our laurels. There is more to be done. Themuseum expansion is high on the list of projects, as is the ScholarshipFund, the SMA-VWIL Initiative, and locating more and more alumni andbringing them on board.

I hope you will respond to the annual dues and contribution mailingthat you should by now have received. Your dues and donations keep theSMA Alumni Association and the SMA Foundation afloat and give us themeans with which we can continue to grow and see progress.

As you know, those of us who serve on the Board of Directors are onlythe caretakers of your association. Thank you! for your support. Thankyou for your periodic messages of encouragement, your feedback andsuggestions, and your involvement!

We could not do it without your help! C. David Litzenburg, SMA 58

FOOD FOR THOUGHTDues are due...

...for the next fiscal year, September 1, 2006 through Au-gust 31, 2007. The annual dues and contributions request wasmailed prior to publication of this issue of The Kablegram andshould by now have been received by all SMA alumni.

Dues and contributions are what keep the SMA Alumni As-sociation in operation, paying bills associated with maintainingan alumni office, publishing The Kablegram, and providing theservices that SMA alumni require to remain active.

In recent years, less that 25 percent of our registered 3,100association members have paid annual dues of $50.00, whileall members have benefitted from the services provided. Ourorganization needs the financial support provided through thedues in order to continue to maintain services and perpetuatethe legacy of Staunton Military Academy.

Also in need of support is the Scholarship Fund, which eachyear provides a $1,000 SMA Alumni Association LeadershipAward to a cadet designated by the VWIL administration. Thegoal for 2006-2007 is to increase this fund to $50,000 so thatfuture awards can be increased to $2,500 annually.

The SMA-VWIL Initiative is still an active fund which pro-vides money to VWIL for discretionary spending, including theexpenses associated with the annual trip to the St. PatricksDay Parade in New York, various leadership seminars for se-lected cadets, and other Corps of Cadets activities that mightnot otherwise be funded.

The SMA Foundation also maintains a VWIL Band Fund anda VWIL Howie Rifles Fund to which contributions have beentargeted by SMA alumni interested in those two area. Thosefunds are provided to VWIL as needs are identified and subse-quently approved by the Board of Directors.

Rooms are available......for the next reunion in Staunton on Friday and Saturday,

April 13 and 14, 2007. The SMA Alumni Association has setaside a block of 80 rooms at the renovated Stonewall JacksonHotel, where the 2006 reunion was headquartered. a change to your personal information street address, homeor business telephone, or e-mail address you should sendthat change by e-mail to [email protected]. You willreceive a confirmation return e-mail.

In the next issue......the regular features such as Then and Now, Pass In

Review and Looking Back will resume. The current issue ofThe Kablegram is an abbreviated one. In September, a largerissue will be published including these features, plus a specialpullout section abundant with pictures from the 2006 reunion.

IN THE WORKS

Shortly after the 2006 reunion, Mary Baldwin College (MBC)approved the proposed expansion of the SMA-VWIL Museum, located in what was once the SMA Supply Room.

Under the leadership of Brig. Gen. Michael Bissell, VWIL Com-mandant, in conjunction with the SMA Alumni Association Boardof Directors, the proposal went through a review process withinMBC and resulted in an expansion plan that will add approxi-mately 1,200 square feet to the facility that now has 1,385square feet. A small area will remain available for storage byMary Baldwin College.

SMA-VWIL Museum toundergo expansion

The project has been turnedover to the SMA-VWIL MuseumCommittee. The group met onJuly 31 to begin formulation ofa design recommendation, costanalysis, and establishment ofa timeline for the expansion.

In addition to expansion ofthe museum, a subcommitteeis examining the costs associ-ated with the repair and resto-ration of the eagle display out-side the museum, and repairsto the World War I monumenton Flag Pole Hill.

Harry W. Bruckno, SMA 62, vice president of the SMA AlumniAssociation and a member of the SMA-VWIL Committee, saidthat feedback from our alumni is important to this effort, in-cluding suggestions of what our members would like to see inthe museum.

COMMENTarY

Computer and furniture acquisition program concludedTargeted effort by SMA alumni began in May 2005

Slightly more than a year ago at the end of the 2004-2005academic year at the Virginia Womens Institute for Women(VWIL), the SMA Alumni Association (SMAAA) became awareof specific furniture and computer needs associated with thenew program that placed upperclass cadets in both Kable Halland Tullidge Hall. The goal was to house the Corps of Cadetssophomore, junior and senior class cadets in two dormitoriesand thereby enhance the organization of the corps.

Several members of the SMA Alumni Association made acommitment seek appropriate furniture and computer equip-ment, upgrading the technology to Mary Baldwin College speci-fications, and then donating the items to VWIL.

This effort became more of a challenge than originally an-ticipated. The initial goal was to have everything in place bythe beginning of the 2005-2006 academic year a goal thatproved impossible to meet.

The effort continued throughout the past year and culmi-nated in June and July of this year with the delivery to VWIL ofa variety of furniture and computer technology. When the Corpsof Cadets returns August 24, there will be fully furnished ca-det offices and separate cadet conference rooms in Kable Hallfor both the senior class and junior class. The same will beavailable in Tullidge Hall for the sophomore class.

Another focus of the program was to assist VWIL in thecreation of a professional Operations Center at the headquar-ters on North Market Street. This was accomplished in lateJuly, and a separate ROTC office was established on the sec-ond floor where the Operations Center once was. A computerdonated by Ryan Zook, an agent with Long and Foster RealEstate in Reston, Virginia was placed in that office for use bycadets and ROTC advisors.

Of the people and organizations involved in this effort, manyhave no association with Mary Baldwin College or VWIL, buthave responded to contacts by the SMA Alumni Associationteam that managed the program.

In the VWIL Operations Center, an HP Media Center com-puter, powerful enough to edit videotape and create profes-sional presentations and DVDs, was provided by Mr. and Mrs.Kenneth Rutland of Oak Hill, Virginia. The Rutlands had pre-viously provided several printers and computer peripherals.

G. Richard Staunch, SMA 61, contributed a 21-inch com-puter monitor to the Operations Center, and the SMA-VWILInitiative was used to purchase 10 conference room chairscompatible with the 48-inch by 96-inch conference table thatwas purchased with funding from an anonymous SMA alum-nus. Mr. Zook, whose computer went to the ROTC office, alsodonated a four-speaker sound system to be used in the Opera-tions Center as well as other technology peripherals for use inareas were they were needed.

Recognizing that not everything needed could be locatedthrough donations, William J. Kearns, SMA 74, chairmanof the SMA-VWIL Initiative Committee, arranged for a $5,000cash donation to VWIL to be used specifically to purchase fur-niture not found among the donated items.

During the initial stages of the program, Michael Guthrie, then the managing broker of the Long and Foster Real Estateoffice in Reston, Virginia, provided a laptop computer (used in2005-2006 by the cadet S-2 staff). He then began a campaignwithin the Reston office to bring other agents into the pro-gram with donations of furniture and technology.

Mr. Guthrie departed Long and Foster Real Estate and be-came Vice President of Roy Wheeler Real Estate in Char-lottesville, Virginia. More recently he arranged for the dona-tion of four computers by Virginia National Bank. One of thesecomputers was used for spare parts to bring other CPUs upto Mary Baldwin College standards. A second computer wasupgraded and placed within VWIL. The two remaining unitsare being upgraded and help in reserve, with one scheduled toeventually be installed in the VWIL Supply Room to replace themuch older unit now there.

Mrs. Boofie OGorman, an agent with Long and Foster RealEstate in Reston, donated an HP Pavilion computer and re-lated peripherals, along with various cabinets, tables and of-fice chairs. The computer has been assigned to use within VWILand the furniture is in use in the cadet offices. Mrs. OGormanalso introduced a member of the SMAAA team to several ofher clients who have committed to contributing additionalpieces of furniture for use at VWIL.

Mrs. Shiela Gant of Herndon, Virginia donated several itemsof furniture that have been placed in cadet offices.

In July of this year, Mary Baldwin Colleges Coordinator ofUser Services, Rich vanBreemen, notified VWIL that six com-puters all configured for use on the college network wouldbe provided, with two units to be installed in each of the threecadet offices and maintained by Mary Baldwin College.

Several other people made significant contributions to thisyearlong effort. Michael Lassiter, a computer technician inHerndon, Virginia, donated many hours of his time to repairand upgrade much of the technology, and tutored me to do thesame. Thomas Baxter, also of Herndon, used his trailer totransport furniture to VWIL, and Harry W. Bruckno, SMA 62,traveled to Northern Virginia, picked up a truck load of furni-ture and delivered it to VWIL.

All equipment and furniture contributions were documentedand acknowledged, enabling the donors will be eligible for theappropriate tax deductions.

Chief Petty Officer Rick D. Schemehorn, Assistant Com-mandant at VWIL, served as VWILs on-site coordinator of theprogram, insuring that offices and conference rooms were ad-equately furnished, utilizing contributed funds to purchaseitems that could not be acquired through donation, and serv-ing as liaison with the SMA Alumni Association team.

Thank You! seems inadequate in expressing our apprecia-tion to everyone who participated. The generosity of those whoresponded to the SMAAA requests was outstanding. There isnow great satisfaction in having achieved a goal that at timesappeared unattainable.

LETTERS AND E-MAILSJune 1, 2006 by letter:Dear Arlene and Brocky,

As everyone has already said, Im surethis last was the best reunion ever! Itcertainly was for me because of a giftJay Nedry gave me. He and the otherspictured assembled at my mothers graveto sing the Blue and Gold for her, whichwas one of her last requests.

There was a driving rain on that bleakafternoon (Saturday), but that did notdeter Jay and his friends! In the photowith Kable holding the umbrella, Jay is

paying his respects to my mother. He said they became friends and that

she would produce humorous namebadges for him, like Duck D. Its a won-der he wasnt dismissed and that shewasnt fired from her badge engraving.

Anyway, I would like the other alumnito be apprised of the kind, thoughtful andloving thing Jay and his friends did. Theysang one stanza because thats probablyall they could remember it was enoughto accomplish what Jay said he had prom-ised to do the year before.

I was so touched! His attitude and enthusiasm certainly

help to encourage the spirit in so manyother men to continue to come, to enjoythe memories and each other.

I am so terribly thankful to be a partof such a worthwhile gathering andgrateful for my association with all.

Most sincerely, Page Lolo Kable Bonfoey

June 5, 2006 by e-mail:Dear SMA Alumni Association,

I have not been very active, nor haveI responded to the newsletters you havesent, other than to update my address, probably because I only attended SMAfor one year (73-74). Im not even surehow you should list my class.

I graduated High School in 77, fromSeoul American High School, in Seoul,Korea, but my class year is listed as 74on my address label. Of course 76 wasthe last class to graduate, so I would nothave been able to graduate from SMAeven if I did stay beyond 74.

I am writing today because of a photoI saw on page 13 in the March Kablegram. The photo in the upper right hand cornerof the page includes my platoon com-mander from my one year, Julian Lake, and my company XO, Gene Ehmann. Ifpossible, I would like to be put in touchwith both, just to say hello.

I have very fond memories of my shorttime at SMA, and the Kablegram hasrevived them. I was always upset thatmy family could not afford to send meback to SMA, and I missed my friendsfrom Rat Year. I guess now is the timeto start getting back in touch.

In case anyone is interested, after fin-ishing high school, I attended Old Domin-ion University, where I was in ROTC withJose Pesquera 76. I then went into theUSMC for six years, then spent 15 yearsin the U.S. Army Reserves as a SpecialForces officer, while pursuing a civiliancareer, firstly in Federal Law Enforce-ment, and later in security consulting andmanagement.

I now live in Singapore, but will be mov-ing to Beijing in August.

Keep up the good work of keeping thespirit of SMA alive. Ill send in member-ship dues by snail mail. Please let meknow how I can contact Gene and Julian,or forward my e-mail to them. Thanks!

With best regards, Wayne P. Wilcox

[email protected]s note: The information Mr. Wilcoxrequested was forwarded to him with asuggestion that he send us pictures andan article from Beijing when he getssettled there. Mr. Wilcox would appreci-ate hearing from some of his former SMAclassmates.

Please accept my compliments on theoutstanding work you have been doing, both as President of our Association andEditor of our newspaper (it is much morethan a newsletter!). Extremely well done!

An explanation of the photo that ap-peared on page 15 of the March 2006issue of The Kablegram is enclosed. Ihope that you and other interestedalumni enjoy it. Please acknowledge re-ceipt, ask questions or make commentsby e-mail, if that medium is more con-venient for you than snail mail. My sonMichael has created a mailbox for meon his system. The address [email protected].

Incidentally, may I obtain a copy of aShrapnel yearbook, to either purchaseor borrow? Im particularly interested inthe years 1958, 1959 and 1960. Id liketo see how some of my buddies, prote-ges, and instructors fared.

Im also interested in the transitionof the Corps of Cadets from Regiment toBattle Group, including the upgrade ofthe First Captain to three-diamond fullColonel and the Battalion Commandersto Lieutenant Colonel. Were the enlistedranks also aligned with those of the U.S.Army at that time, to include a three-stripe Buck Sergeant and one-rockerStaff Sergeant, as well as putting a staror star and wreath in the center of theSergeant Majors insignia?

Finally, Id like to know what led tothe closing of SMA.

Perhaps some of our alumni who ac-tually experienced those changes couldcontribute historical perspectives for TheKablegram.

Keep up the good work. We Old Boysreally appreciate it.

Thank you all for the enjoyable 2006reunion. Deborah and I appreciate themany things done on behalf of we alumni.

In particular, Brocky and Arlene thanks for making it possible to order aclass ring replacement from Jostens.

Following the reunion, we visited mysister-in-law. She is preparing to moveand in the process came upon my 1952yearbook. As you know, the copy I re-ceived through your efforts as a replace-ment is available for any 1952 alumnuswho lost their yearbook at no cost. Ifyou know of anyone who would like tohave it, Id be glad to mail it to them.

On the subject of locating old boys Ienclose a copy of Mail Call from the Ma-rine Magazine Leatherneck as a sug-gested method of finding folks via TheKablegram.

Would it be OK to place a photo of mybrother and I next to the sabre on dis-play? If not appropriate no problem.

Finally, The Kablegram produced byDave Litzenburg is an outstanding news-letter!

I also really appreciated sitting in onthe Board of Directors meeting. I gaineda renewed respect for the tremendouswork they do.

Thank you all for everything. Frank Lee, SMA 52
