Anthony Smith received the July Caregiver of the Month award at Regional Health. Anthony is one of 32 people supported by Black Hills Works who work at the hospital in Central Sterile Services, Distribution-Deliveries, Medical Records, Laundry, Warehouse, and Kitting Room.

Black Hills Works Pre-Vocational Instructor Mike Brennan says the surgery department had asked him if he had anyone available to transport used surgical supply carts from the surgery department to the decontamination room. Regional Health was in the process of rebuilding and re-installing the elevator used for this process, so Mike had Anthony take the temporary assignment taking the used case carts an alternate way.

“Anthony made a very good impression on Jamie Joachim the director of surgery at that time. So the current director, Peggy O’Sullivan, nominated him for the Caregiver of the Month award and offered to make

Emerson Olsen, Briana Wangsness, Mike Braden, and Ordean Stevenson will be honored at this year’s Gala with our Outstanding Achievement Awards. The annual event provides us with the opportunity to recognize those who have made outstanding progress in our programs as well as the businesses and individuals who support us.

Mike is employed in housekeeping at Granite Nissan where he is known for his memory of music trivia. He is working with our technology team to learn more about researching that and other interests online.

Emerson is a budding actress and speaker. Among her many accomplishments is speaking to school groups and others on the subject of bullying. She has just accomplished her goal of getting her driver’s license.

Briana honed her food service skills at the Raider Café and is now living her dream as the bakery assistant at our new bakery, BakeWorks, located on Mt. Rushmore Road.

Ordean not only inspired the story of OSITY, An Adventure into a Cabinet of CuriOSITY, he had a starring role in it. He is known for remembering the birthdays of all his friends and acquaintances.

We will also be honoring volunteers Rhonda Grant and Margarite Reyelts, who have volunteered countless hours on OSITY and other projects of Flutter Productions. Xanterra Parks and Resorts, which operates the dining and shopping facilities at Mount Rushmore and employs eleven people served by Black Hills Works, will receive our Employer of the Year award.

The Gala will be held November 5 at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. Be watching for your chance to purchase tickets.

Meanwhile Josh Walker ,who has been working in the warehouse, will move into Anthony’s former position in Central Sterile Services drying and assembling sterilization canisters. “Josh is looking forward to the move and has been trained to take over,” says Mike. “The Central Sterile Services crew is sad to see Anthony go but he will somewhat still work with the Central Supply crew as their work is closely connected.”

Keven Moulton honored at conference

Keven Moulton was honored with the 2015 Tom Miller Award for Advocacy for his commitment to advocating for himself and others with disabilities at the SourceAmerica Grassroots Advocacy Conference June 13-16 in Washington, D.C. “It’s a great honor,” he said. “I was very surprised when I got it.” Keven says he learned about the importance of self-advocacy through “a lot of hard knocks,” and he would like others to benefit from his experiences. As Keven has worked to improve the workplace for people with disabilities, he’s led efforts to educate legislators about the challenges he and others face when it comes to employment. Keven has had the opportunity to meet with every South Dakota lawmaker in both the United States House of Representatives and the Unitd States Senate. Golf FORE a Cause held in two locationsTwenty-three teams played in the Black Hills Works Golf Tournament, Golf FORE a Cause, on Monday, July 18 at Arrowhead Country Club.
