THINKING SPACESMAHARA AS A “DOMAIN OF ONE’S OWN”
PURPOSE OF INSTITUTIONAL SPACES:
• PUSH MECHANISMS FOR ACCESS TO RESOURCES• ALERTS, DEADLINES• MASS AND INDIVIDUAL COMMUNICATIONS FROM
TUTORS• TESTS, LEARNING ACTIVITIES• ONLINE SUBMISSION
WHERE CAN YOU GO TO THINK?
• REFLECTION WIDELY RECOGNISED AS IMPORTANT TO LEARNING• NEED TO DEVELOP GREATER UNDERSTANDING OF DIGITAL SPACES
In building that personal cyberinfrastructure, students not only would acquire crucial technical skills for their digital lives but also would engage in work that provides richly teachable moments ranging from multimodal writing to
information science, knowledge management, bibliographic instruction, and social networking.

WHY MAHARA?
• INTEGRATION WITH MOODLE• USER OWNED SPACE• PERMISSIONS AND SHARING CONTROLLED BY USER
This is a fascinating area to explore, and so important for the future - it got me thinking about online spaces in ways I
never have done before. Really, it's incredible we don't think about them that much, seeing as they play such a big role in
our lives.(Student on WIHEA project)
WHAT IS MAHARA?
• OPEN SOURCE E-PORTFOLIO TOOL • INTEGRATES WITH MOODLE• INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY OF USERS• ACTIVE USER GROUPS
“When I call for each of us to have a domain of our own, I’m not really invoking
“ownership” … I am, I do confess, invoking Virginia Woolf and the importance having
the space and safety and security (financially well before technologically) to
think and write and be”. Audrey Watters Hack Education
