What is Enlightened Self-interest ?Enlightened self-interest is a philosophy in

ethics which states that persons who act to further the interests of others (or the interests of the group or groups to which they belong), ultimately serve their own self-interest.

It can be simply expressed by the belief “helping each other help ourselves.”

Page 4: Think in Enlightened Self-interest

It has often been simply expressed by the belief that an individual, group, or even a commercial entity will "do well by doing good.”

The idea is that we can create value and wealth for the world, which ultimately serves ourselves, because we live in the world.

An enlightened self-interest, which when well understood, they tell us will identify with an interest more enlarged and public.

Approach of a Non-contributor…

Page 8: Think in Enlightened Self-interest

How do Contributors think…???How to achieve my team

goals and also ensure there are no negative

consequences for other teams.

Page 9: Think in Enlightened Self-interest

How do Non-contributors think…??? My team goals have to

be met. Why should I care about negative

consequences for other teams and

departments?

Contributors v/s Non-contributors…

Contributors Non-contributors

•Contributors think in Enlightened Self-Interest.

•Non Contributor is only concerned with his own self-interest in a situation.

•In every situation they get into, they find a way to create good for self and good for all at the same time – including team mates, bosses, customers, their organization.

•He is not concerned about the impact on the other person ,this leads to unpleasant situations, broken relationships, unhappy team-mates, subordinates, and bosses, and lower trust in any situation.

Enlightened Self-interest

Recognition of futility of selfishness

Responsibility beyond self

Self Interest

Real life Eample… Chewang Norphel, known as “The ICE

MAN of India” has created 12 glaciers in Ladakh to help deal with water scarcity.

Because of negligible rainfall in Ladakh, he

went on a mission to build these artificial glaciers that helped locals in an incredible way.

He saw that the flowing water was moving too quickly to freeze, while the sluggish trickle of water beneath the trees was slow enough to freeze.

Page 13: Think in Enlightened Self-interest

Based on this, he created artificial glaciers by diverting a river into a valley, slowing the stream by constructing checks.

That resulted in to eradication to water scarcity at Ladakh.

Omkarnath Sharma popularly known as “Medicine Baba” walks around the streets of Delhi, knocking the doors of relatively we-to-do households to collect medicines

Omkar started collecting medicine when a bridge collapsed in East Delhi in 2008, and he saw many injured people turned away from hospitals because they didn’t have the required medicines.

Page 15: Think in Enlightened Self-interest

Since last six years wearing a saffron kurta that says "Mobile medicine bank for poor patients“.

Omkar starts every day at 6 am from his rented home in the Mangalapuri slums and goes door to door in different areas of Delhi asking for unused medicines, which he then distributes to charitable hospitals, NGOs and clinics.

The principle of Enlightened Self-interest :-

Place your own interests first.

But always keep in mind that one’s own interests would be best served if he takes into account the interests of others.

Human beings are basically self-interested,but they are also motivated by social interest.

Page 17: Think in Enlightened Self-interest

Conclusion…People should try to follow their

enlightened self-interest.

One should prefer a long-term interest over a short-term one.
