SCHOOL COUNCIL OFFICE BEARERS 2018 At our meeting last week, the following councillors were voted into the office bearer positions on our Council for 2018:

Andrew Graham – President Emma Bartlett – Vice President

Dennis Osborne – Treasurer Lauren Wellsteed – Assistant Treasurer

Loren Hewitt – Secretary

I congratulate all our councillors especially those new to Council for committing to serving our school on School Council and I’m excited by the thought of working together to build on our recent successes as a school. BRAVEHEARTS Last Thursday 15 March, our students from years Foundation to 2 thoroughly enjoyed participating in the Bravehearts incursion with Ditto. Thanks to the many parents who were able to attend. This is important to your children to know that the Bravehearts message of staying safe is important. I hope many families have had a chance to talk with your children about the session.

BBQ Thanks to our great aide team and the year 34 chefs who prepared the food for our BBQ lunch on Tuesday. We raised over $1100 towards paying for our grounds upgrade. The new line markings are occurring during the holidays and we are trying to arrange for our new seating to be installed as well. Thanks to all families for this support. EASTER RAFFLE We have 10 Easter hampers to win in our Easter raffle, which we will draw on Monday. Huge thanks to the generous staff and Mossfiel families who have donated lots of goodies to put into the hampers. Prize winners will be announced on Monday and hampers will be sent home with students or we will contact any other winners. PARKING Recently, the local Council officers have attended around our school to check our parking. We did not get a good report! They found cars parked on gutters and in No Standing and Disabled park spaces. We do have families who need to use the Disabled spaces and we ask that all drivers respect that need. Our students are the responsibility of the whole Mossfiel community and we need to make sure that we keep them safe. Please make sure you park correctly and avoid a fine. COLES SPORT FOR SCHOOLS VOUCHERS

Coles are rewarding shoppers with double sports for school vouchers until 23rd March. Coles supermarkets are running the Sports for Schools program giving school communities the opportunity to collect as many vouchers as possible to redeem for sporting equipment for our students. We ask that you and your friends and family members collect the vouchers and either put them into the box for our school at some supermarkets or bring them to the box near the office if there is no box for Mossfiel where you shop. Already we have collected a large number – but we have time to collect more!

Keep Smiling Maureen Price

Jonas Came to Mossfiel Primary School Last Wednesday, the 21st March, an African Drummer came to visit Mossfiel Primary School as a part of our Harmony Day Celebrations and Acknowledgments.

Jonas comes from Ghana in Africa and has been a full time musician since the age of seventeen. He has played in

numerous bands and toured across Australia supporting bands such as Osibisa and Ziggy Marley and has still found time to tour to schools Australia wide for the past twenty

years. Students learnt about the Ghana region, heard a traditional story highlighting the importance of friendship and learnt words from the local languages, Ga Tui Mzema and Effutu. With their newly learnt words, Jonas had the entire audience participating in traditional call and response songs. The audience also learnt how many traditional African instruments are made from easy to find natural resources. Here’s what some of the staff and students said and thought about the Ghana Beat My Drum Harmony Day Incursion at Mossfiel Primary School…

Here are some simple words and phrases from the Ghana language TWI (pronounced ‘chwee’)

English TWI Pronunciation Hello ayikoo AY-YEE-KOOH

Safe Journey / Good Bye nantew yiye NAN TI YEAH Good Morning maakye MAH CHEE

Stand gyina JI NAH No Worries Hakuna Matata HAKU NA MA TATA Thank You meda ase pii MAY-DAAH SAY PEE

Good Job / Well Done woaye adee pa ara WO YE ADIA PAH

“Jonas was really funny and

interesting to listen to.”

“The Incursion was fantastic. It was very engaging and Jonas seemed to capture the student’s interest straight away with his enthusiasm and musical talent. His presentation was varied and involved all the students at some level.”

“I loved the way he invited different students up to play his musical instruments. Many were very eager to participate.”

“I asked various students for feedback about the incursion and it was nice to hear some say they enjoyed the story he told.”

“It was really active cause was did a lot

of jumping and African dancing.”

“It was really fun and engaging because there

was a lot of audience participation.”

Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open and Mossfiel Primary School is excited to be participating. The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development.
