THINGS HAPPY PEOPLE DO DIFFERENTLY PSYCHOLOGY 101

BY OMOLU CHIDI“There is only one way to happiness and that is to cease worrying about things which are beyond the power of our will.”--Epictetus

“We tend to forget that happiness doesn’t come as a result of getting something we don’t have, but rather of recognizing and appreciating what we do have.”----Frederick Koenig. Happiness is a mindset. And if you’re looking to improve your ability to find happiness,

Here are the things happy people do differently;

HAPPY PEOPLE ABIDE BY THE GOLDEN RULE:• We all have had this sayings when growing, “Do unto others as you

would have them do to you.” Well, happy people truly practice this principle. They treat others with respect. They’re sensitive to the thoughts and feelings of other people. They’re compassionate. And they get treated this way (most of the time) in return.

HAPPY PEOPLE DON’T SWEAT THE SMALL THINGS:• One of the biggest things happy people do differently compared to

unhappy people is they let go things. Bad things happen to good people sometimes. Happy people realize this, are able to take things in stride, and move on. Unhappy people tend to dwell on minor inconveniences and issues, which can bring about feelings of sadness, guilt, resentment, greed, and anger.

HAPPY PEOPLE FIND BALANCE IN THEIR LIVESPeople who are happy have this in common: they’re content with what they have, and don’t waste a whole lot of time worrying and stressing over things they don’t. Unhappy people do the opposite: they spend too much time thinking about what they don’t have. Happy people lead balanced lives. This means they make time for all the things that are important to them, whether it’s family, friends, career, health, religion, etc.TAKE THE TIME TO LISTEN.Talk less; listen more. Listening keeps your mind open to others’ wisdoms and outlooks on the world. The more intensely you listen, the quieter your mind gets, and the more content you feel.

AVOID SOCIAL COMPARISON.• Everyone works at his own pace, so why compare yourself to others?

If you think you’re better than someone else, you gain an unhealthy sense of superiority. If you think someone else is better than you, you end up feeling bad about yourself. You’ll be happier if you focus on your own progress and praise others on theirs.

HAPPY PEOPLE SEE CHALLENGES AS OPPORTUNITIES.• People who are happy accept challenges and use them as

opportunities to learn and grow. They turn negatives into positives and make the best out of seemingly bad situations. They don’t dwell on things that are out of their control; rather, they seek solutions and creative ways of overcoming obstacles.

• Worry Is Like A Rocking Chair. It Gives You Something To Do But Gets You Nowhere.

DON’T HOLD GRUDGES. • Happy people understand that it’s better to forgive and forget than to

let their negative feelings crowd out their positive feelings. Holding a grudge has a lot of detrimental effects on your wellbeing, including increased depression, anxiety, and stress. Why let anyone who has wronged you have power over you? If you let go of all your grudges, you’ll gain a clear conscience and enough energy to enjoy the good things in life.

TREAT EVERYONE WITH KINDNESS.• Did you know that it has been scientifically proven that being kind

makes you happier? Every time you perform a selfless act, your brain produces serotonin, a hormone that eases tension and lifts your spirits. Not only that, but treating people with love, dignity, and respect also allows you to build stronger relationships.

EXPRESS GRATITUDE FOR WHAT THEY ALREADY HAVE.• There’s a popular saying that goes something like this: “The

happiest people don’t have the best of everything; they just make the best of everything they have.” You will have a deeper sense of contentment if you count your blessings instead of yearning for what you don’t have.

HAPPY PEOPLE LIVE IN THE PRESENT.• While unhappy people tend to dwell on the past and worry about the

future, happy people live in the moment. They are grateful for “the now” and focus their efforts on living life to the fullest in the present. Their philosophy is:

There’s a reason it’s called “the present.” Because life is a gift.THEY PRACTICE SPIRITUALITY If you think being happy is something that happens as a result of luck, circumstance, having money, etc.? Think again….
