Hurston's work is, the majority of the time, a reflection of
her own self.
- Janie’s ‘Nanny’ arranges for her to get married to Logan Killicks, an older
man.
-After Logan tries to force her to help with the hard labour of the farm, Janie
runs off with Joe Starks, a younger man, in hope of finding love.
-Joe takes her to Eatonville, an ‘all coloured town’, where he invests in more
land and builds several convenient buildings, for example, the shop.-Janie realises Joe wants her as a trophy wife after he is appointed Mayor and allows her to
run the shop but forbids her to socialise with the others.
-After Joe Starks passes away, Janie is left financially independent and feels ‘free’.
-Janie falls in love with a young drifter who goes by the name ‘Tea Cake’.
-Janie and Tea Cake run off to the Everglades region where they both have a loving
relationship like Janie always wanted.
-The region is hit by a hurricane, but although they both survive, Tea Cake gets bitten by a
rabid dog whilst protecting Janie.
-As his sickness develops, he tries to shoot Janie with a pistol, forcing Janie to shoot him with
a rifle in self defence.
-She is charged with murder. At the trial, black men turn up against Janie, whilst a group of
white women turn up in aid of her. The all-white jury acquits Janie.
-Janie gives Tea Cake an appropriate funeral. She returns to Eatonville, where the residents
are already gossiping about her.
