A note for visitors: Were thankful that you could join us for worship today, andwe pray God blesses you in your time here. The service is printed in your bulletin andinsert. If you have any questions dont hesitate to ask someone around you!

St. Francis Church wants to encourage families to worship together. The practice ofdividing families for worship is a modern invention and is often detrimental to the goalof worshipping as a body. In order to be a community where all ages feel welcome,

we provide coloring materials for children to use during worship and seek to be acommunity that understands the specic gifts and challenges that children bring. Weencourage you, should you feel comfortable doing so, to sit toward the front with yourchildren, as little-ones are often more attentive if they can see what is happening.

That being said, we understand that there may be times when it is best to takeadvantage of child care, which we have available in the room immediately through the

Kitchen off of the entryway. All parents are provided with vibrating beepers to informthem should anything come up requiring their attention.

In Preparation for worship: We invite you to take a few moments before the servicebegins to be still, and rest from the business of your lives. Take time to breathe deeply, and reect upon the past week. When youre ready, you might say the following prayeror one like it in preparation for worship.

O Almighty God, who pours out on all who desire it the spirit of grace andof supplication: Deliver us, when we draw near to you, from coldness ofheart and wanderings of mind, that with steadfast thoughts and kindled

affections we may worship you in spirit and in truth; though Jesus Christour Lord. Amen.

    Collect of the Day:

O God, whose blessed Son made himself known to his disciples in the breaking of bread:Open the eyes of our faith, that we may behold him in all his redeeming work; who livesand reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

    All sit.

A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles.

But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: Men of Judeaand all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. Letall the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord andChrist, this Jesus whom you crucied.

Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of theapostles, Brothers, what shall we do? And Peter said to them, Repent and be baptizedevery one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you willreceive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you and for your children andfor all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself. And with manyother words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, Save yourselves fromthis crooked generation. So those who received his word were baptized, and there wereadded that day about three thousand souls.

    I called upon him.

2 The cords of death entangled me;the grip of the grave took hold of me; *I came to grief and sorrow.

3 Then I called upon the Name of the Lord: *

O Lord, I pray you, save my life.

10 How shall I repay the Lord*for all the good things he has done for me?

11 I will lift up the cup of salvation *and call upon the Name of the Lord.

12 I will fulll my vows to the Lord*

in the presence of all his people.

13 Precious in the sight of the Lord*is the death of his servants.

    14 O Lord, I am your servant; *I am your servant and the child of your handmaid;

you have freed me from my bonds.

15 I will offer you the sacrice of thanksgiving *and call upon the Name of the Lord.

16 I will fulll my vows to the Lord*in the presence of all his people,

17 In the courts of the Lords house, *in the midst of you, O Jerusalem.Hallelujah!

    Second Reading: 1 Peter 1:17-23

A Reading from the First letter of Peter.

If you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each ones deeds, conductyourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, knowing that you were ransomedfrom the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such assilver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish orspot. He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the

last times for the sake of you who through him are believers in God, who raised him fromthe dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

Having puried your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, loveone another earnestly from a pure heart, since you have been born again, not of perishableseed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God.

That very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles fromJerusalem, and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened.

While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went withthem. But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. And he said to them, What is thisconversation that you are holding with each other as you walk? And they stood still, looking sad. Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, Are you the only visitor

to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days? Andhe said to them, What things? And they said to him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, aman who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and howour chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and cruciedhim. But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it isnow the third day since these things happened. Moreover, some women of our companyamazed us. They were at the tomb early in the morning, and when they did not nd his

body, they came back saying that they had even seen a vision of angels, who said thathe was alive. Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the

women had said, but him they did not see. And he said to them, O foolish ones, and slowof heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Was it not necessary that the Christshould suffer these things and enter into his glory? And beginning with Moses and all theProphets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

So they drew near to the village to which they were going. He acted as if he were goingfarther, but they urged him strongly, saying, Stay with us, for it is toward evening and theday is now far spent. So he went in to stay with them. When he was at table with them, hetook the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them. And their eyes were opened,

and they recognized him. And he vanished from their sight. They said to each other, Did7

not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us theScriptures? And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem. And they foundthe eleven and those who were with them gathered together, saying, The Lord has risenindeed, and has appeared to Simon! Then they told what had happened on the road, andhow he was known to them in the breaking of the bread.

People: Praise to you, Lord Christ

Sermon: The Rev. Joseph B. Howard

TheNiceNe creedWe believe in one God,the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,eternally begotten of the Father,God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,

begotten, not made,of one Being with the Father.Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvationhe came down from heaven:by the power of the Holy Spirithe became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.For our sake he was crucied under Pontius Pilate;he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son.With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and gloried. He has spoken through the Prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

People: It is right to give him thanks and praise.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you,Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

But chiey are we bound to praise you for the glorious resurrection of your Son JesusChrist our Lord; for he is the true Paschal Lamb, who was sacriced for us, and hastaken away the sin of the world. By his death he has destroyed death, and by his rising tolife again he has won for us everlasting life.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all thecompany of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

    The Sanctus: S-130

Holy and gracious Father: In your innite love you made us for yourself; and, when wehad fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent JesusChrist, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one ofus, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.

He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, aperfect sacrice for the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ tookbread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, andsaid, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance ofme.

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them,

and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shedfor you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for theremembrance of me.

    A Note on Todays Readings

The Third Sunday of EasterYear A

Welcome to St. Francis Church. Each year on this Sunday, the Gospel reading reects on one aspect of the Lordsresurrection. Todays reading is an account of the risen Christ sharing food with his friends. Today we hear about hisbreaking bread with two disciples who encountered him on their way to Emmaus. Jesus expounded the scriptures tothem and at table took bread, said the blessing and broke the bread. It was at that moment that they recognized him.

    14

The rst reading continues Peters sermon on the rst Pentecost day, which we began reading last Sunday. Theresult of the sermon was a large crowd turning to Jesus as Messiah and being baptized. The churchs way of livingand sharing its life is then briey described.

Todays reading from 1 Peter continues the letters theme: baptism and its results in our lives. We are all new peoplein the risen Lord and now live in him.

Each Sunday is the resurrection day. For that reason, the church has always made the Eucharist the center of itsSunday worship. As the disciples on the road to Emmaus discovered, Jesus really did rise, and meets us here in the

sharing of Gods Word and in the breaking of the bread. As he did on that evening, we take bread, say the blessing, break the bread, and meet the risen Christ.
