MECHANICAL ENGINEERS RESEARCH, DEVELOP,
DESIGN, MANUFACTURE, AND TEST TOOLS,
ENGINES, MACHINES, AND OTHER MECHANICAL DEVICES. THEY WORK ON
POWER-PRODUCING MACHINES SUCH AS
ELECTRIC GENERATORS, INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES, AND STEAM AND GAS TURBINES.
They also develop power-using machines such as refrigeration
and air-conditioning equipment, machine tools, material handling systems, elevators and escalators,
industrial production equipment, and robots used in
manufacturing.
Mechanical engineers also design tools that other engineers need
for their work. The field of nanotechnology, which involves
the creation of high-performance materials and components by
integrating atoms and molecules, is introducing entirely new
principles to the design process.
Computers assist mechanical engineers by accurately and efficiently performing
computations, and by permitting the modeling and simulation of new designs
as well as facilitating changes to existing designs. Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) are used for
design data processing and for turning the design into a product.
Mechanical engineers work in many industries, and their work varies by industry and function. Some specialize in energy systems; applied mechanics; automotive design; manufacturing; materials; plant engineering and maintenance;pressure vessels and piping;heating and refrigeration;air-conditioning systems.
Mechanical engineering is one of the broadest
engineering disciplines. Mechanical engineers may
work in production operations in
manufacturing or agriculture, maintenance or technical sales; many
are administrators or managers.
Mechanical engineers may perform the following tasks:
consider the appearance of the designs as well as the impact on the user and on the
environment
design new machines, equipment or systems
taking into account cost, availability of materials,
strength and maintenance requirements
act as consultants, carrying out studies about
possible changes or improvements and estimating costs of products for clients.
set up work control systems (e.g. testing
of equipment) to make sure that standards of performance, quality, cost and safety are
metspecify, select, install and manage the maintenance of factory production
and machinery
supervise the operation of manufacturing process plants such as vehicle and electrical appliance production plants, coal handling installations,
power stations and sewerage and water supply pumping
stations
use Computer-Aided Design
(CAD) to assist in design and
drawing
carry out research in the use of different types of fuel and energy, materials handling,
heating and cooling processes, the storage and
pumping of liquids and gases, and environmental
controls
undertake the design and construction of resource
development projects such as offshore platforms,
onshore gas plants and iron ore mining facilities
Mechanical engineers frequently work closely with other professionals, at times
pooling expertise on particular projects, e.g. with architects in designing air conditioning
plants.Mechanical engineers may
work in production plants, in offices and outdoors when involved in construction
projects.
