That’s what happened last year during the rst annual such event, part of the Allegany River Fest. This year, the Great Cardboard Boat Regatta joins country music stars Mark Wills and Josh Gracin on Saturday, July 10 as part of the second annual Allegany River Fest at Veterans Park in Salamanca. Activities are being presented by the Salamanca Area Chamber of Commerce. According to Events Specialist Jenny Ingrao, “The chamber is very excited to bring Mark Wills and Josh Gracin to this area. It’s not every day people can meet (and hear) two well-known artists.” So how did the River Fest get started? Over at the chamber, Jane Fenton explains, “We felt we really needed to add another tourism- oriented event that focuses on one of our big assets here, the Allegheny River. We thought a country river fest made a lot of sense.” She notes that the rst festival went extremely well. Fenton notes, “We probably had the worst rainstorm of the year” which kept some people away. “The good news is that it was our rst large concert event of this nature, and everything came off perfectly. Happy birthday, America! And a warm, Fourth of July welcome to all our friends, locals and visitors alike. There’s no place on this green earth I would rather be than right here and right now. You could just feel the excitement building as our little village prepared itself this past week for three days of red, white and blue festivities and unbelievable sensory delights. Food, music, arts and crafts, parades, fi reworks – you name it, we got it! It all seems so appropriate to me, as we are celebrating “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” – this is what our nation is all about, isn’t it? Although the majority of Americans (with a sprinkling

of our northerly cousins!) associate July 4th with the independence of the United States from Great Britain, for many it also represents quality time with loved ones, cookouts, summer sports and vacations. While fi reworks explode against the distant night sky, and the bratwursts sizzle on the grill, take a moment to appreciate all things good in your life. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – there’s no better place to be than right here, right now! So, dear readers, keep your fi ngers crossed for great weather, great food, and great fun this weekend. Happy Independence Day! Until next week …

Thank You ... From HoliMont’s Phoenix Adaptive Ski Program

We have a group of very appreciative people consisting of parents and students in the program. A big thanks goes to the creators of the HoliMont Cookbook sale. Those are Dennis Bell, Peter Sullivan and Marcy Hazard. Now, along with the local merchants and newspapers, with the administrative management of Evan Evans, the sale continues to grow. Proceeds go to purchasing more equipment, to help these students develop into bigger ski enthusiasts and competitors.

The Phoenix Program has come a long way in the past 15+ years, and has developed into the top PSIA program in the U.S. (PSIA-professional ski instructors of America-eastern division). Its success is largely dependent on donations, for the instructors’ training, volunteers and parents to assist these students for their skiing enjoyment. We are very proud to have this close knit club within our HoliMont Ski Resort. The cookbook sale has become so successful that we

are now gaining support from some of the top professionals in the adaptive ski industry. They help assist in procuring additional equipment as these students progress. In the future, we hope to include adults, wounded soldiers and veterans in the adaptive program. Again, many thanks to the Cookbook Sales Team that is helping this program become a bigger reality.

E’VILLE - The Rotary Club of Ellicottville, Foundation for Youth presents the Americana Folk Art and Music Fair July 17-18. This two-day family event will feature artists, musicians and family fun in the Ellicottville Town Square on Saturday, with a Music Fair and artisans at Holiday Valley on Sunday. This event is sure to instill the spirit of creativity in children and adults alike. The popularity of the hands-on demonstrations in previous years made us want to do more to capture the spirit of the artistic community that makes up the Ellicottville and the Enchanted Mountains area. On Saturday, July 17, artists

and artisans of all sorts will be featured in the Town Square for this free event, showing you how to weave, spin, carve, paint, sketch, sculpt and craft candles. Some of the best artists in Western New York will demonstrate glass blowing and metal crafting. Antique metal painting along with rustic furniture making and basket weaving will give you a peek at the skills of days gone by. There will be

a caricature artist on site both days who will capture your light side for all to see. The ever-popular hay wagon and tractor rides will take you on a tour of the village passing the petting zoo, carvers and the art show. Added for this year’s event are free pony rides for children around the Town Square. You can see Bob McCarthy’s unique art in many of the storefronts around

town for a fl avor of what will be shown on Saturday. A very unique demonstration this year will be Hughey Dunn demonstrating the art of growing mushrooms. A homemade chicken BBQ, hot dogs, great pies from Pumpkinville, popcorn, snow cones and mouthwatering deserts will be available all

For the second year, the Bluegrass and Roots Music Fair will take place on Sunday, July 18 from noon-7pm on the hill in front of Tannenbaum Lodge at Holiday Valley. The gates open at 11am for this outdoor concert and interac-tive music fair.

A Booming FourthCity of Olean Set for Annual Fireworks Celebration

OLEAN - The City of Olean’s Annual Fourth of July Fireworks Celebration is set for Sunday, July 4 at Bradner Stadium in Olean. The fi reworks are organized by the Olean Professional Firefi ghters Association, OPFFA. The stadium gates open at 4pm. Coolers and packages carried into the stadium will be checked for security reasons. City of Olean Firefi ghters

took over the local fi reworks program in 2001. Prior to that, the Dempsey Club (City of Olean Police Department) ran the fi reworks. The fi reworks have been held in Bradner Stadium since the early 1960’s. The actual fi reworks program, not just the ground displays, were shot inside the stadium. However, due to the rising safety issues, the fi reworks are now being shot from Forness

Park. The ground displays are still shot inside the stadium, but at a safe distance away from the spectators. Young Fireworks of Rochester, NY, shoot the shows. A wide range of shells are shot in their programs. The shells range from 1” shells all the way up to 10” shells. The 10” shells are the largest shell that can be shot safely in the area. “The 2010 Fireworks Celebration will be a fun-fi lled evening of great music, mouth-watering food, family entertainment and socializing culminating with a spectacular fi reworks show at dusk,” reported Captain Ed Jennings, Olean Fire Department staff and co-chair of the Fireworks. Again this year there will be a Bounce House and Infl atable Slide inside the stadium. Music will be performing inside the stadium by area bands:

Realeyze with Devon Dwyer, Signs of Life, The Phones, Lake Effect, and Sauce. The WMXO-FM Radio Station, the fi reworks broadcast sponsor, and Squirrel City Sound will be on hand and provide music to accompany the fi reworks. In case of inclement weather, the fi reworks will be scheduled for the next clear night. Please remember the fi reworks are funded all through your donations. The OPFFA is looking for a non-profi t organization for the July 4 event to assist with seeking donations from those that choose to sit in War Veterans Park and on the dikes around the stadium. For more information of the fi reworks, please contact fi refi ghters Dave Bauer or Ed Jennings at the Olean Fire Department, 716-376-5609 or e-mail fi reworks@oleanfi reworks.org

OLEAN – The Macker is Back in Olean! Entries are now being accepted for the Gus Macker 3-on-3 basketball tournament, to be played August 21-22 on Delaware Avenue in downtown Olean. The Olean City School District Foundation and the Olean Sports Booster Club are co-sponsoring the Gus Macker 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament to Olean. Joe DeCerbo, Gus Macker Co-Chair stated, “We anticipate having over 350 teams and 10,000 spectators from a 100-mile radius to attend the three-day event and

see this as a great opportunity to showcase Olean.” More than four thousand registration forms will be mailed to team captains from tournaments held in Hornell, Jamestown, Buffalo and Olean last year. Entry deadlines for teams interested in this year’s tournament are Friday, July 30 for applications that are submitted by mail, and Monday, August 2 for internet entries. Holliday Valley Resort and the village of Ellicottville will host this year’s New York Rural Letter Carriers Associations Convention from July 5-8. Members of the rural letter carriers union will carry out offi cial business at the convention, and enjoy the sights and sounds of the village in their spare time. Vicky Raecher, a rural carrier

for Salamanca and one of the planners for the event, said that representatives of the state board would be arriving within the next few days in preparation for the convention, as would some of the rural carriers and their families. She said the last time the Cattaraugus County Chapter hosted the event was in 1991 at the former Castle Inn and Restaurant.

According to Raecher, approximately 150 to 200 people would take part in the convention, and that it would include NYRLCA Auxiliary members, and Junior members. The Auxiliary members are the spouses of letter carriers, and they often act on behalf of letter carriers who are absent from the meetings. They also raise funds for charity, such as their current program with the American Cancer Society to combat skin cancer. The Junior group consists of the children and grandchildren of letter carriers. Raecher added that during the

convention many clubs within the union would also be meeting, such as letter carriers who were in the armed forces, and even retired letter carriers. Each day of the convention,

from 8am-5pm, the members would focus on offi cial business, such as the election of offi cers, the approval of contracts and discussion of resolutions they could present at national convention. Katie Widger, a local carrier,

said that members of the Cattaraugus County Chapter started discussing whether to host the convention and teamed up with Holiday Valley Resort to create a plan for the event. NYRLCA members at last year’s convention in Liverpool approved the proposal to hold this year’s event in Cattaraugus, and that the convention committee has been working since early January preparing for

the event. Raecher said the committee wanted to make certain the convention was memorable, while at the same time, addressing the limitations of transport in a small village. Without a mass transit system, and with a number of different restrictions on the use of school buses as means of transport, the committee needed to fi nd activities that were close-at-hand, she said. This was especially important for the Junior members, which made Holiday Valley Resort a good choice for the venue because it offers a large number of onsite activities. Raecher said the convention would offi cially start on July 5 with the registration of NYRLCA members, followed by an evening memorial service to honor deceased letter carriers, their spouses and children, and an icebreaker featuring an impromptu talent contest by the carriers and their family. DJ David Allen would perform at the icebreaker. On July 6, Salamanca police offi cer Mary MacQueen and her rescue dog, Robin will present a K-9 demonstration to the Juniors. MacQueen and Robin were awarded the 2008 Police Offi cer of the Year award for Salamanca, and Robin has received the American Kennel Club’s 2009 Award for Canine Excellence in Law Enforcement. Robin is the fi rst golden retriever to receive the award, and he has appeared on NBC’s Today

Show. In the evening, attendees will ride in horse drawn carriages from Holiday Valley Resort to the village to familiarize themselves with the various shopping and dining establishments. The group will then have dinner at The Depot, and enjoy another presentation by DJ David Allen. The convention committee scheduled a visit to Herman’s Alpaca Farm for the Juniors on July 7, followed by a Mardi Gras themed banquet at Holiday Valley’s Tannenbaum Lodge. Adult attendees will enjoy a banquet and awards program at the Tannenbaum Lodge featuring the entertainment of Liz Boberg. The convention will also feature a used book sale at The Inn at Holiday Valley. The book sale will feature many different types of books including fi ction, autobiographies, history and romance, and even some videos. It will take place July 5 from 2-6pm, and from 9am-6pm on July 6 and 7. Raecher said the book sale would help fund the 2012 national convention that is to be held in Erie County. She said this convention would draw rural letter carriers from across the country, and that the Erie County chapter, which is hosting the event, needed to raise funds to cover many of the costs. She added that this is the second year of fundraising for the upcoming event, and that the group would gladly accept the donation of well-maintained used books.

After holding their grand opening on June 1, 2010, Indrek and Tracey Kongats have been busy with bicycles at their new store, Gear Up Mountain Sports. Focusing primarily in bike rentals, the store has the most convenient “park and ride” location, next to the main chalet at HoliMont. The shop sits quaintly on the hill at the beginning of the bike trail. With everything from urban

street bikes to downhill racers, the primary brand that Gear Up is carrying is Rocky Mountain Bikes, which is a line from Canada and British Columbia. “We chose Rocky Mountain Bikes because nobody else is carrying them. We wanted a premier brand that wouldn’t infringe on anyone else’s territory,” says Indrek. Rentals are $28 per 24 hours, and helmets are $5 per 24 hours. Looking for something a little more extreme? High-performance demo bikes are available for $60 per 24 hours. The store has virtually anything you’d need, including helmets, clothing and accessories.

According to Indrek, the best bike in the house is the Rocky Mountain Slayer, a full suspension mountain bike. “This is the best in style because it’s a super cross country bike, for a variety of vertical descents. It has well over 152 millimeters of travel in the rear and over 160 millimeters of travel in the front forks - which is over 6 inches of travel. The sophisticated framework absorbs shock and anything a cyclist could throw

at it – rocks, logs, you name it,” he says. The convenient location of the shop makes it a haven for mountain bikers. “The trail that starts out at our cross country ski trail is friendly enough for beginners without too much steepness. It has a scenic connection to both Little Rock City and Spruce Lake, with a level ride after the hill climb,” says Indrek. The staff at Gear Up is very familiar with the local trails, for the most part, which are very extensive. Trails here connect to the Finger Lakes Trail System, which can take a cyclist from here to the Adirondack Mountains. There is also a trail that connects to the Bruce Trail System in Canada. “We are doing staff rides and all learning the trail systems together,” says Indrek. “We

sell a map for $6 that has every trail listed in Allegany State Park, Golden Hill, Nine Mile Road Trail and the Ellicottville Network.” All trails in the area are labeled by diffi culty. Both Indrek and Tracey hope to set up repair services very soon for everyday problems. They currently have a tire fi lling station and water hose for cleaning bikes that come off the mountain. Shop hours are Friday from 9am-3:30pm, Saturday from 7am-4:30pm, and Sunday from 10am-4pm; however, the hours are very fl exible. You may call anytime during the week a day ahead of time to set up an appointment to reserve bikes or ask questions. For more information, call Indrek or Tracey at Gear Up Mountain Sports Rentals at 716-699-5582.

Last week after General Stanley McCrystal was forced to resign because of some very ungeneral-like comments made to a Rolling Stone reporter, the American media went into hyper drive trying to fi gure out what was going on and how they managed to miss it. Afghanistan never had the “made for TV” feel of Iraq which made it a hard war to cover. It also makes it a very dangerous war to cover. The pretty faces at the networks don’t like to appear on camera sans makeup so they’ve managed to collectively dismiss the war altogether. They never imagined that they would be scooped by a reporter for a music magazine and they didn’t like it. Many people assume I’m some sort of “peace and love” hippy who opposes all war all the time. That’s not the case. I’ve supported our efforts in Afghanistan from the beginning. The Taliban were an evil oppressive regime and they harbored the masterminds of 9/11. They’re not nice people. I did, however, recognize the idiocy of invading Iraq for no reason while simultaneously

weakening our forces in Afghanistan. Our ugly little war in Iraq made our job in Afghanistan much harder and prolonged our efforts there. Leadership is another issue altogether. Insubordinate Generals are nothing new. Some of America’s greatest war heroes were insubordinate snots. Patton anyone? Stanley McCrystal, however, was in charge of the war effort. He wasn’t a battlefi eld commander and he didn’t have the luxury of hiding behind his men. For the sake of the grunts engaged in actual combat, the General must always appear level-headed and in command even if they don’t agree with the suits in Washington. War is just as much a political game as it is a military one. Generals like Eisenhower recognized this fact and managed to hold the greatest alliance in history together even though he sometimes didn’t like the choices Washington had to offer. Stanley McCrystal mouthed off about his bosses, told the world who he voted for and made jokes about his job. The idea that he believed his comments were somehow “off the record” is laughable. President Obama had no choice but to accept his resignation. Now let’s come up with a new strategy and win the war. As for the media. To put it mildly, they’re a bunch of prima-donnas and they have been for a long time. The hilariously shocked faces of the network talking heads when they realized that they had missed the military story of the year is a story in it’s own right. I’ve been a Rolling Stone reader for several years so it came as no surprise to me

when the story broke. Rolling Stone has been home to some of the best correspondents journalism has to offer. The big surprise was the vengeful reaction by other members of the media who now fear that their inner circle jobs are no longer safe. For too long now the media has been controlled by people more concerned with padding their own reputations. The idea that the American people might actually want to know what’s really going on has never crossed their minds. CBS’s chief foreign affairs correspondent, Lara Logan, is a perfect example of this. During an appearance on CNN she complained that Michael Hastings, the reporter who broke the McCrystal story, had violated some sort of understanding between the media and the military. According to Logan, “if they believe the coverage is balanced they will let you back in.” Balanced? Are we all supposed to be some sort of cheerleader for the Generals just so they’ll let us in to their inner circles? Where’s Ed Murrow when we need him? Rolling Stone and Michael Hastings have accomplished something here besides pointing out the incompetence of a General. They’ve managed to make the media’s job a little harder and, from a journalistic point of view, that’s a good thing. Reporters should have to work for their stories. When a reporter starts to compromise his or her own journalistic integrity just to gain entry into some imaginary club, then the story is already dead. Maybe now America’s longest war will get a little honest coverage. Comments? E-mail Doug at [email protected]

My name is Erica Walker. I am 35 years old.

To the world you may be just one person, but to one person, you just may be the world. Thank you from the Western New York Kidney Connection.

I have most recently been attending Erie Community College in hopes of attaining my Registered Nursing degree. I have about another year before I complete it. However, I’ve decided to take a break from it while attending to my most recent illness. I am trying to be brave and stay healthy enough until I can receive a kidney transplant. Doctors say I’m fairly young to be diagnosed with CKD. I have been receiving dialysis treatments for about a year now. I worked at Interstate Baking Company for 10 years prior to the plant closing a few years back. They made Wonder Bread and Hostess products right here in Buffalo, NY. My boyfriend, Jim, and I have recently purchased and moved into our fi rst home. We’re very excited. Our plans are to marry and raise a family here in Cheektowaga. If you are blood type “A” and would like to be Erica’s living kidney donor, please call Jeanette Ostrom at 716-450-8958 or e-mail Erica at [email protected]

OLEAN - The national Meals on Wheels Association of America (MOWAA) has announced that local resident Hank Gilbert is one of 19 fi nalists in their 2010 American Volunteer contest. Hank is a Meals on Wheels volunteer at the Brookside Community Senior Apartments in Olean, New York. Monday through Friday, Hank delivers meals to approximately 13 residents of the apartment building, which is over 250 meals each month. Hank is an energetic and youthful 93-year-old gentleman who states, “It’s a privilege for me to do this.” Hank not only delivers meals, but also can be seen

delivering mail or packages to some of the homebound residents receiving meals. He often will take the time to truly visit with each person, and was once the fi rst person to assist when a Brookside resident fell and broke her hip. He was recently recognized for his kindness to others and willingness to volunteer with a certifi cate of appreciation from the Cattaraugus County Department of the Aging’s Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). Barbara Beckman, Brookside Community apartment manager, admires Hank’s energy and dedication to his daily task of delivering meals.

She refers to Hank as a “Meals on Wheels driver without a car.” The Cattaraugus County Department of the Aging is now working on getting Hank votes to win the MOWAA’s 2010 American Volunteer contest. Barbara Woodarek, nutrition services coordinator at the Department of the Aging said, “Anyone can log onto the MOWAA website at www.mowaa.org/american_volunteer and vote for Hank. The more votes Hank receives, the better chance he has of becoming the national 2010 American Volunteer. And not only will Hank win the contest to be the 2010 American Volunteer, our local Meals on Wheels program will receive a check for $1,000 from MOWAA.” Cherianne Wold, director of the Cattaraugus County Department of the Aging said, “We appreciate the entire 400-plus Meals on Wheels drivers in Cattaraugus County. Voting for Hank in this national contest gives all Meals on Wheels volunteers in the county your vote of approval for their dedication to their communities and to this vital service. Please take the time to vote for Hank to be the 2010 American Volunteer.” If you have any questions about the Meals on Wheels program or the American Volunteer contest, please call the Cattaraugus County Department of the Aging at 716-373-8032 or 1-800-462-2901.

For the second year the Bluegrass and Roots Music Fair will take place on Sunday, July 18 from noon-7pm on the hill in front of Tannenbaum Lodge at Holiday Valley. The gates open at 11am for this outdoor concert and interactive music fair. The Music Fair will feature

The Doerfels - Family Bluegrass National recording artists. The band composed of fi ve permanent members ranging in age from 13 through 20 is often joined by others from this family of 10 children. Originally from Springville, the band spends most of the year on the road while making the Keys their home away from home. They are regular performers at Sloppy Joe’s in Key West. Their upbeat bluegrass music will have the crowd on their feet for the entire performance. The show will also feature

Angelica Grimm who brings her high energy country/bluegrass sound to WNY

from California. She will do an acoustic set to open the show and brings her band for a second set. A hit at last year’s concert, “Homemade Jam” with Pete Boberg features Gene Hiltz on pedal steel with Liz Boberg’s fabulous vocals. The three original members Bernie, Dug and Gail, the heart of the Blue Mule Band, have added Don and Steve to deliver the unique sound that is Blue Mule. The concert features two stages this year so that the music never stops. Local author and musician, Tom Naples brings his band Cold Creek and their unique sound. A new sound from Jack Little’s group Zazoo will round out the music. Holiday Valley will be serving up a BBQ chicken dinner and many other treats for concert-goers.

This is not just a concert but as everyone found out last year it is a great family outing. Bring your chairs, blankets and basket for a fun day in the Enchanted Mountains. Tickets are only $10 in advance and $15 at the gate. Children under 12 are free when accompanied by a parent. Tickets can be purchased at Holiday Valley, A Touch of Ellicottville, The Barn, The Gin Mill, Red Door Ski Shop and from any Rotarian or call 699-8758. the century horse and buggy television suspense series, four Wild West performers will dazzle concert-goers with rope tricks, a Texas bull whip act, and a Fast Draw Challenge by Smilin’ Dan, who will be looking for audience volunteers.” What about those cardboard

boats? How well can they fl oat? You’ll fi nd out at 10am at the boat launch across from the Salamanca High School. Fenton says there’s been “an incredible amount of interest; we’re expecting well over fi fteen entries this year.” Everybody makes their own boat out of cardboard. “Believe it or not, cardboard fl oats for a very long time. Participants will have to do a 200-yard route, usually a couple of heats, and then the fi nal race.” Following the race, Veterans Park opens up at noon and the concert starts at 1pm. Right now, the Salamanca

Area Chamber of Commerce is seeking 65 volunteers to help with the festival. “We hope many people who helped last year come back, plus we can

use a few more.” Volunteers should contact the chamber as soon as possible, for taking and selling tickets at the gate, and to sell ride tickets. “We need people to assist our headliners with their equipment,” and to take them to and from the concert area. They could also use some people to man the beer tent and the Chamber of Commerce booth.

You can also enter to win VIP passes to meet Mark Wills and Josh Gracin until July 2 by contacting the Chamber of Commerce. Advance tickets are being offered at $22. The price at the gate will be $27. For more information visit www.alleganyriverfest.com or call the Salamanca Area Chamber of Commerce at 716-945-2034.

One of the major highlights from last year’s Allegany River Fest was the Great Cardboard Boat Regatta, which is mak-ing a comeback during this year’s event. Participants will launch their homemade creations at 10am on July 10 from the boat launch across from Salamanca High School. To get involved in this year’s Regatta, contact the Salamanca Chamber at 716-945-2034.
