Edilegnya and Nell
Several months ago I noticed a free-ranging abandoned donkey with a limp and enlarged hoof in our neighborhood. I thought
he was a lucky beast – he didn‘t have to work. But the hoof got bigger and then split, and he began spending most of his time
lying down. Clearly something had to be done soon – the local hyenas might have gotten
him in his weakened state.
I called the Donkey Sanctuary, a UK NGO working in Ethiopia and other countries where
people rely on donkeys. The Sanctuary provides free services to donkeys and mules – any-
thing from routine vaccinations to in-clinic surgery.
Dr Chala and his team came out and examined
the donkey. As Dr Chala pointed out, he could-
n‘t even get enough food and water because
walking was so painful. They found that the over-
grown hoof was infected and infested with mag-
gots, but the real problem, from their point of view, was a badly-deformed left leg.
The Sanctuary‘s charter is to treat donkeys till they are ready to work again – and, in
the case of abandoned animals, to give them to poor people who need them. Since
my donkey – I‘d already become attached to him – could never work again, the
team thought they would have to euthanize, but agreed to see what they could do.
They gave painkillers, cleaned, pared, and flushed out the hoof, gave antibiotics and
then administered a deworming treatment. By the end of this initial treatment the
donkey was already standing and nibbling on grass.
In a few days he was walking around, grazing normally. Dr Chala came weekly for a
month to examine and re-bandage the hoof, and I formally adopted the donkey and
named him Edilegna, meaning Lucky – which he certainly was. Under proper treat-
ment, a donkey lives about 40 years, but here they average 15-20. The main cause of
these premature deaths is intestinal parasite infections, and other relate to overwork.
I let Edilegnya remain free in the neighborhood. Marked by bright red or green tape on his hoof, he became well-known, and
donkey owners began bringing their animals when the team visited. I got my share of appreciation too – it was great.
The Donkey Sanctuary‘s made a big difference here. I lived in Ethiopia toward the end of Haile Selassie‘s reign, and many don-
keys had raw backs, but were loaded down with big burdens anyway. I haven‘t seen that since I came back in 2007, and that‘s
probably due to the Sanctuary‘s work. If you visit their Mercato clinic, you‘ll see a lot of donkeys getting treatment and their
owners getting training.
Edilegnya‘s progress was erratic. The infection returned twice, and I finally confined him and administered a longer course of
antibiotic injections. At first I was really hesitant about doing it, but it wasn‘t a problem for Edilegnya, as long as he had some
grain to distract him. Now we think he is really cured. Dr Chala‘s coming back this week for a final check.
