Thessaloniki is the capital of Macedoniaand it was first established in 316 B.C. byKassandros and named after his wife,Thessaloniki, half sister of Alexander theGreat. The name Thessaloniki meansVictory in Thessaly. It was the second mostimportant city of the Byzantine Empire,next to Constantinople. Thessaloniki is atown with rich history and an excitingpresent.

The White TowerThe symbol of Thessaloniki and the point ofreference for the locals and the visitors. Itstands next to the sea front of the townreminding the old times. In the 19thcentury it was a prison. Nowadays it’s amuseum of art and history.

LadadikaThe area from Koudouriotou to Diamantistreets and from Hiou to Lemnou streets isknown as Ladadika. Here you can findmany bars, restaurants and the Museum ofancient Greek and Byzantine instruments.

Aristotelous SquareThe most impressive square inThessaloniki. Buildings with greatarchitecture inspired by European andcolonial models, cafes, shops etc. Ameeting place during the day. The squarewhere the big celebrations take place, suchas the coming of the new year.

Saint Dimitrios ChurchThe church of the patron saint of the townis a must see in Thessaloniki. The firstchurch of Saint Dimitrios was built in 313A.D. It was completely rebuilt in 1948according the original plans since it hasbeen destroyed twice before by fire.

town. Galerius arch is situated near theeastern walls of the city, a short distancefrom the Kassandreotiki gate.

The RotondaRotonda is a cylindrical building of early4th century A.D., unique in Greece. It usedto be a Pantheon or a Mausoleum foremperor Galerius. Now it’s the SaintGeorge church. The entrance is free. Themosaics inside are really impressive.

MylosMylos is a large entertainment complex inthe warehouse district of the port. Thereyou will find bars, galleries, restaurants,cafes, theatres and plenty of varieties oflive music.

During the summer months you can visitthe nearby beaches of Perea, Nei Epivates,Agia Triada, Nea Michaniona and Epanomi.There are many hotels, marinas, playcourts, camping places, taverns etc. Mostof the beaches have been awarded withthe blue flags by the European Unionthanks to the high standards and the clearwaters.

Take a walk at the famous Ladadika area,near Aristotelous square and you will find anumber of traditional restaurants, ouzeries

and taverns. Enjoy grills and inventiverecipes such as kontosouvli, giaprakia andgardoubes with a glass of wine or ouzo. Ifyou prefer sea food, you will be excitedwhen you taste mussels’ pilaf, grilledsardine, frutti di mare, shrimps saganakiand stuffed squid, in one of the many fishtaverns of the town. Thessaloniki offers avariety of tastes. Traditional Macedonianfood, oriental cuisine, refugees’ dietaryhabits and European cuisine.
