From the Pastor,Rev. David G. Watermulder

new is just beginning,

is that the possibilities

seem so wide open.

We don’t quite know

what shape things

will take, or where

God will lead us in

the months and years

ahead. And that’s

part of the fun! That’s

the adventure of life

together as a family of faith. When

Lisa and I visited with you all in Feb-

ruary, we met so many new people

over three days that it was almost

comical (please introduce yourself a

couple more times!). But the exciting

part is that even as we begin to get to

know each other, the story has yet to

be told. We’re not at the end, we’re

just at the beginning.

So, in the days ahead, I will look

forward to seeing you on Sunday

mornings in worship and to begin

growing together as God’s people in

this place. It’s going to be fun, it’s go-

ing to be an adventure, and it starts

this month!

Grace and Peace to you,

Pastor Dave

The boxes are

packed, the plans are

made, and the Watermulder family

is making the big move this month

to Los Gatos! We are so excited to

finally arrive and to begin life and

ministry together with our new

church family at PCLG.

In the Old Testament, God tells

the Prophet Isaiah, “I am about to

do a new thing; now it springs forth,

do you not perceive it?” It feels that

way to us these days, like God is

about to do a new thing in our lives

and in the life of this church! And

our job, our role, is to “perceive it”.

To see it. To be watching for what

God is up to in our midst and to

discover the ways that we are called

to participate in it.

Dave Watermulder’s First Sunday Preaching at PCLG is May 13!

Let’s fill the Sanctuary on Sunday, May 13 at 10:00am to welcome Dave & Lisa Watermulder to

PCLG! Spread the word!

Dave Watermulder’s Installation Service

On June 10, 2012 at 3:00pm, the Presbytery of San Jose will formally install Rev. David G. Watermulder as the Pastor of the Presbyterian Church of Los Gatos. Please plan to attend this special worship service that will include participants from PCLG and throughout our Presbytery and beyond (including much of Dave

and Lisa’s family coming in from around the country). This will be a great opportunity for us to practice the gift of hospitality as we welcome others to PCLG. The installation service will be followed by a reception in Fellowship Hall. Be there!

Host a Dinner for 8 with the Watermulders

Interested in getting to know Dave and Lisa Watermulder in a comfortable, relaxed setting? Sign up to host them for dinner at your place! Simply choose the Friday or Sunday night you’d like to have them over, then invite 4-6 of your PCLG friends to also join you for the evening. This will be a lovely way for lots of the PCLG family to get to know the Watermulders, while allowing them to settle in without being inundated by invitations for dinners!

Not able to host, but you’d like to attend a dinner? Contact Elder Angie Smith at (408)358-5555 or [email protected].

The Annual Church Picnic will be on June 3! We’re going to do things a little different this year with a good ol’ fashioned country hoe down! Yee haw! Please

plan on attending and staying for a little while for some fun activities, including square dancing,

circle dancing, and some fun games. There’ll of course be some good barbeque, lemonade, and all the trimmings of a church picnic. Would you like to help plan the picnic or help the day of? Call Erik Khoobyarian

at (408)219-3190 or email [email protected]. The Planning Team will meet in early May, so sign up now!

San Jose Family Shelter(Family Supportive Services)

Join us in celebrating the completion of a new family shelter, now located at 692 King Road in San Jose. The beautiful new facility can house up to 35 families for 90 days and provides much more than just

housing services.

Moreover, thanks to generous

donations by the Margaret Ross estate and others, there’s a PCLG room! Watch this space for ways we can support this valuable ministry, from preparing a weekend meal to donating new bedding.

Thanks for your generous donations of cereal and pop-top cans of meats, fruits and veggies to our local House of Hope, part of West Valley Community Services. The Brodsky family helped drop off the food and also donated two large bags of oranges, which the clients were happy to receive. House of Hope, a food pantry located on the campus of Calvary Church on Los Gatos Blvd., is open most Thursdays from 3 to 6 pm and they would love your gifts of fresh produce from your yard!

Westminster Woods! Did you know the PCLG mission budget helps support a beautiful Presbyterian camp and conference center for all ages in Sonoma County? Open houses are happening on May 1 and May 12 and summer camps for children entering 2nd grade through high school start June 24. Camperships are available by contacting Chris Daly at [email protected]. Find out more at www.westminsterwoods.org.

PCLG’s service day is always the first Monday of the month from noon to 3pm at Sacred Heart Community Service in San Jose. Join us May 3! Need a ride down to their center on South First Street? Call Martha Wills at (408)354-6527.

Deacons are known as the heart of the church—part of the glue that holds our church family together. As a family, we need to take care of and help each other. If you recognize that one of us has a need that isn’t being met, please let one of your Deacons know so we can do our best to help.

• Conversation Corner: Look for us at the coffee hour on the fourth Sunday of each month. Do you have a name tag? We can get them for you. Our name tags are an important accessory so our incoming minister can get to know us! We also record birthdays (but not your age) and anniversaries to be recognized in the Spire.

• Drivers: We can never have too many for the “Ride with Me” program. If you feel driven to volunteer, please phone Tony Herz. For driver requests, please allow 48 hours notice whenever possible.

• Cooks: There’s no such thing as too many cooks in the kitchen with our “Caring Cuisine” program. We heartily welcome new volunteers!

• Baskets: Ellen Graff creates our lovely hospital baskets.

• Prayer Shawls: Prayer shawls are often given out in times of strife, grief or illness. If you knit or crochet and are interested in making a prayer shawl, we have yarn and patterns. Please contact Pat Jones.

• Bulletin Board: There is a bulletin board (on wheels) available in the Social Hall if you would like to post something. There are certain parameters for posting which are listed on the board.

• Home Communion: Home communion is available if you are unable to get to church. Remind us if we forget to ask you.

• Deacons Senior Lunch: There was no room on the Spring calendar for lunch, so we “fasted” and moved the luncheon to Sunday July 8th after church.

HOW TO REACH US:

Need a ride, need a meal, need to talk? The Board of Deacons can help during times of illness, grief or when the demands of daily life become too difficult. We will provide rides, meals or a friendly face to share assistance and personal com-fort.

Please call Elder Ev Wilson at 408-268-2679 for immediate response. Messages may be left at the church office at 408-356-6156 ext. 35.

PRAYER REQUESTS:

If you or someone you know needs prayers, please contact Lydia Terrill, Prayer Chain Coordinator at (408)559-3346. You may also call Elder Ev Wilson at (408)268-2679 or the church at (408)356-6156—ask for the Rev. Dave Watermulder.

Your deacons are here to help! Just look for our green name tags!

We’ve had a request from the volunteer office at Good Samaritan Hospital. They are seeking additional spiritual care volunteers to visit hospitalized patients on an interfaith basis. Good Sam does not currently have a chaplain. Contact Mary McCall, Director of Volunteer Services at (408)559-2344 or [email protected]. They would welcome previous/current Deacons or Stephens Ministers.

pretnatal care, obstetrical services, fistula repair surgery, cercvical cancer screen-

ing, childhood immunizations, nutritional guidance and health education.

God’s Place in May:Paul and FriendsMark 16:15; Acts 9, 6In conjunction with our theme this year, “Belonging to God,” we have learned the stories of special people who have responded to the call to further God’s kingdom in this world. After Jesus’ resurrection but before his ascension, he gave this command: “Go into all the world and preach the gospel.” Among those who heard this command were the faithful disciples Peter and John. And yet the greatest apostle of all was probably Paul, who was dramatically converted from radical persecutor to fervent Christian communicator.

Memory Verse: Jesus said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation.”

Easter Egg Hunt The Annual Egg Hunt despite the dampness was hopping with 40-plus children in atten-dance. Thank you to WOW for stuffing over 600(!) plastic

eggs and to our youth helpers for assisting with the event.

May Mission For our May mission project, we will be col-

lecting containers of PB&J for CityTeam’s “Spread the Love”

program. This program provides low income families with

lunches while out of school. Please put your donations in the

designated red bins. Thank you.

God’s Place Summer Session Our summer lessons for

children in K-5th grades will focus on mission and service.

The children will explore different countries, their people and

how they live. We will also learn about some special people

who have heard God’s call to serve and assist those countries.

Two adults are needed to teach for each of these Sundays: June 24, July 15, July 29, August 12, August 26. All lessons and materials are provided (Tier 1 Safe Church clearance is required).

Preschool teachers are also needed for the summer (June 17 through August 26). The children are adorable and so much fun. The lessons are very simple and prepared in advance (Tier 1 Safe Church clearance is required). We need your help! Please sign up for a Sunday. Serve as Jesus’ disciple and spread the good news! Contact Chris Daly at (408)356-6156 x30 or [email protected].

As we come to a close on our last rotation for this season, the Children’s Ministry Committee and I would like to thank all the amazing people for their support and service to the children and this ministry. We couldn’t have these incredible classes and programs without your help. You have truly been a blessing. God bless you!

Calling all 3rd graders! This is a special presentation just for you. There will be a “Bible 101” party to follow in

Our book sale raised just a little over $250. We divided the pro-ceeds with one half going to the PCLG Chapel, and the other portion went to the Holly Clayville Cancer Research Foundation at Stanford. Thanks so much for your support. We wonder how many of us buy, read and bring back the following year to sell again? We can start a new trend and call it “Read-cycle”

Bookends had a field trip to the new Los Gatos Library, and got a tour. It is a lovely new space that is green in many ways. There is interesting artwork and many clever architectural details. They have a classroom upstairs where they offer classes on e-readers and geneal-ogy. Check it out ! PCLG’s Book Club meets once a month. Look for Bookends flyers in the sanctu-ary narthex. New folks are always welcome. Contact Sue Hansen for more details/info: [email protected].

Holy Week and Easter this year was a blessed time for us all: contemplative,

prayerful, moving, and joyous. We all enjoyed our tradition of processing into the

Sanctuary, led by the donkey, on

Palm Sunday, palms waving. On

Maundy Thursday, hearts were

broken as we remembered the story

of Christ’s suffering through the

cantata The Weeping Tree, and on

Easter morning we gathered with

friends and family to celebrate

Jesus’ resurrection and triumph

over death!

We have a precious

few weeks together

left before the Chancel

Choir and Joyful

Voices choir break

for the summer. We

invite any and all to

join us in singing for

Dave Watermulder’s

Installation Service on June 10! Let’s give Dave a proper introduction to PCLG’s

Music Program and show him what we can do! If you’re interested, contact Sara

at [email protected].

You are invited to the

Annual Spring RingPresented by the Handbell Choirs of

The Presbyterian Church of Los Gatos16575 Shannon Rd. Los Gatos, CA

4:00pm Sunday, May 20 in the Sanctuary

This year’s concert will feature the two adult choirs as well as solo ringing by Paul Kvamme. It will be a varied program of sacred

and secular pieces, some arrangements of old favorites as well as new compositions written specifically for bells. Come, bring your

neighbors and friends to a fun afternoon of music.

The choir leads the procession into the Sanctuary on Palm Sunday singing “Hosanna! To the Son of David!”

Choir members pose with the donkey on Palm Sunday.

What a glorious adventure God called us into!

Christ rose,

Brian’s truck broke down,

the night was cold,

the sun was hot,

Jesus appeared to his disciples,

the rain came down,

Brian’s truck was fixed,

Christ ascended,

-the Grapevine had snow,

and a family had a home.

And the pregnant lady was perfectly fine! We’re looking forward to

sharing our little piece of God’s story with you on May 6 in

worship.

Don’t forget…Confirmation for young people begins on Wednesday,

May 2 at 7pm for any youth who’d like to discover the meaning of membership at PCLG.

Financially, PCLG has gotten off to a good start in our first quarter of 2012. Our year-to-date pledge income is at 103% of budget and our overall income is at 106% of budget. Our pledge income is $128,277 compared to a budget of $123,984. Our overall income is $192,410 compared to a budget of $181,446.

On the expense side we are at 93% of budget through. Our overall expenses were $180,223 compared to a budget of $193,374. That means that at the end of March we actually have a profit, rather than a budget deficit. Our year-to-date profit is $12,186 compared to a budgeted deficit of $11,928. Thank you all for your generosity!

Our current pledge total is 201 pledges for a total amount of $513,456 compared to a budget of $513,600. Thanks to all of you who have pledged to PCLG for 2012. If you would still like to pledge, it is not too late. Please just call or email me and let me know.

Spring came to PCLG’s front yard in mid-March, thanks to Carolyn Rosen and our Work Day volunteers. The 1,000 daffodil bulbs were planted last October during Fall Work Day. Carolyn is one of our in-house horticulturists and a member of the Facilities Committee. She bought the bulbs with the definite plan to get our children involved and to identify with the church. She asked Paul Kvamme (son of our church organist Margaret) if he would like to help and supervise the other kids. Carolyn says that Paul did a great job! Judy Borcherding was on her hands and knees, watching over the group. George Rose had rototilled the area earlier in preparation for planting the bulbs. A friend of ours and neighbor to the church called to tell us how much he enjoyed the daffodil display. He said he drove by twice so he could appreciate the springtime show. That’s a beautiful outreach!

- Bill Buckman

A special thanks to everyone who turned out for our Spring (and Fall) Work Days! Thank you for all you do to beautify our church.
