h a v e a f e e d of c o n s t a n t c o m p o s i t i o n f o r t h e d u r a t i o n o f
t h e e x p e r i m e n t s w o u l d be d i f f i c u l t ; i n a d d i t i o n t h e r e
w o u l d be th e p r o b l e m of d e l i v e r y o f t h e f r e s h d o m e s t i c
sewage from t h e t r e a t m e n t p l a n t t o t h e l a b o r a t o r y . T h e r e
f o r e a s y n t h e t i c sewage was re qu ir ed , to a c h i e v e the ex
p e r i m e n t a l o b j e c t i v e s .
The f e e d i n g w a s t e w as a s y n t h e t i c sewage, a s
d e v e l o p e d from p r e v i o u s i n v e s t i g a t i o n s ( 3 7 ) . T ap w a t e r
f r o m t h e c i t y o f F r e d e r i c t o n , N.B. w as u s e d i n t h e p r e p
a r a t i o n o f t he s y n t h e t i c w a s t e .
The s e e d i n g s l u d g e was t a k e n f r o m t h e a c t i v a t e d
s l u d g e p l a n t o p e r a t e d by t h e F r e d e r i c t o n A r e a P o l l u t i o n
C o n t r o l C o m m i s s i o n . I n o r d e r t o l e t t h e s e e d i n g s l u d g e
