Class Definition of Thesis

A thesis statement provides two essential components of a student’s work: A claim/argument that clearly addresses all

aspects of the prompt and A unifying theme that supports/defends the

claim. (this provides the framework for argument)

Criteria for assessing thesis:

1. a. Claim addresses all aspects of the prompt1. b. claim shows originality & depth of

thought2. a. unifying theme supports the claim

accurately & logically2. b. unifying theme should “control” the essay

(this can only be determined by reading the entirety of the essay)

Based on our definition for thesis, analyze the following thesis statements.

Thesis #1

The focus and funding of stem cell research needs to be on adult stem cells because adult stem cells have produced real treatments to diseases whereas embryonic stem cells have very few, adult stem cells don’t violate moral or ethical boundaries when used and gathered, and the implications of adult stem cells in the use of disease treatment are expanding more and more as we research them.

Thesis #2

Embryonic stem cells show a promising future in medical research and use, despite moral issues surrounding stem cells and the ethical issues surround the collection of embryonic stem cells.

Thesis #3

Factory produced pasteurized milk is more harmful to human health than grass-fed, organic, raw milk because it contains growth hormones and the growth hormones are linked as a cause of cancer.

Thesis #4

Although the Western Diet is linked to an increase in metastasis, it is because of the sugars in the diet rather than the fat and cholesterol, because the fats and cholesterol that are used to build tumors would not function without the energy the sugar provides.

Thesis #5

Even though euthanasia can only occur with the patient’s consent and is many times said to be more humane, it should be illegal because it is taking away a person’s life on purpose without know what the patient’s future holds, which is morally and ethically wrong.

Thesis #6

If one single product has killed hundreds of thousands of people every year, it should no longer be available for sale. Cigarettes not only harm the smoker but they also have the potential to harm those around the smoker.
