Welcome to the January edition of the Sherwood Community Newsletter - your local voice for
all things across the Sherwood forest region. We are the only newsletter to reach so many local readers.
After the excess of Christmas and the New Year I expect all of us to be making promises to our body’s to take a different path for 2014! That may involve losing weight, getting fi t, volunteering or just making some life changing choices to make your future healthier and fi tter.
In this issue you can fi nd all sorts of tips on how to achieve these ‘resolutions’ and local businesses who can help. If your own body is a temple you may want to spruce up the home with decorating, kitchen or building work. Our local advertisers will I am sure be happy to advise and help make this happen.

Mark Spencer MPSherwood MP supports Start-up Loans and ‘Small Business Saturday’
I have been supporting businesses around the constituency recently in the run-up to small business Saturday. I run a small business employing local people and I know how important it is to our economy and to our communities.The local butcher, baker, newsagent, chip shop, post offi ce and pub all serve us regularly and help to keep our high streets alive and employ local people. This is why it is so important that we as a government help to support these businesses as much as possible, whether it is reducing the burden of business rates by capping bill increases or scrapping employers’ National Insurance contributions for under-21s. If we can make it easier for small businesses to succeed then they will take on staff and help to reduce unemployment and improve our economy.
I welcome the news that a combined fi gure of 39 Start-Up Loans have been accepted for small businesses in Ashfi eld, Gedling and Newark and Sherwood District Councils worth £148,598. Our constituency contains parts of all of these district councils which means good news for local businesses in Sherwood.Start-up Loans provide alternate funding sources to back innovative businesses ideas with 10,000 loans worth £50 million having been given the green-light nationwide.The scheme’s success comes as the Government backed ‘Small Business Saturday’ last weekend as a way of boosting local traders. I have paid a visit to many local businesses in the run up to
‘Small business Saturday’ including Fairfi eld Control Systems Ltd in Kirton. This company have just been revealed as the Jaguar Land Rover Small Employer of the Year 2013 in the National Apprenticeship Awards at a ceremony at Birmingham’s NEC.It is my pleasure to support such fantastic companies like Fairfi eld Control Systems, ‘Small Business
Saturday’ has made us realise just how much we rely on small businesses and why it is so important for the government to create incentives that allow businesses to succeed.All businesses have to start small and Start up loans enable enterprising people to start their businesses and help to stimulate the economy and create jobs.This is about re-balancing our economy and growing the private sector with Start-up Loans giving people the opportunity put their ideas into practiceAfter the success of ‘Small Business Saturday’ I am pleased to welcome new entrepreneurs and I wish them the best of success with their ideas.

Charity Ride Raises Cash for Local Hospice....... Continued from the front pageThe Rainworth Riders group raised their money during a sponsored cycle ride from Rainworth to Skegness back in July 2013. The guys started the cycle ride in near perfect conditions but as they got closer to the coast they had to contend with a headwind that got stronger as they neared their goal (Skegness Clock Tower)Riders for 2013 were Lee Wilson, Jono Wilson, Billy Learmonth, Dean Learmonth, Mick Trench, Simon Dickie, Richard Giles, Anthony Hawson, Steff Fish, Cliff Clarke, Alic Keay and Keith Lyall. Mansfi eld Triathlon ClubWorld Champ at Mansfi eld Tri AwardsIt was a very special annual awards night for Mansfi eld Triathlon Club members this year. Not only has the club been shortlisted for the Mansfi eld Sports Awards club of the year but twice world champion paratriathlete Steve Judge was on hand to present the club’s annual award for achievement and effort. Steve presented awards in a number of categories. Tristar and Junior Athlete of the Year went to Freya Mottram who fi nished tenth overall in the East Midland’s Children’s race series and has worked consistently hard in training. In the remaining junior awards Matthew Woodhall won Junior Competitor of the Year, the Coaches’ Award was won by Rosie Kibble and the Juniors’ Junior Award was shared by Matthew Woodhall and Cormac Allison. Local Businesses Sign up For Career Champion’s PledgeBerni Dickinson of The Mansfi eld Learning Partnership (in both photos) has been working with local businesses for a number of years to give young people the opportunity to improve their skills and raise aspirations. Working with A-Star media ltd, The Chad and Mansfi eld 2020 Business Club the MLP has created ‘Career Champions’By becoming a Career Champion a business will be taking a pledge to commit to undertaking at least one activity each academic year which will support the employability skills of students within the MLP. Or is it the time to fi nd someone in your life to share your experiences with? It’s never too late to fall in love. 10. Spend More Time with Family: Every family member is dependent on each other even though they don't always show it, so spending time with family is very essential. Coat CommitmentFashion by NatalieCapturing winter romance in their grand, abundant fabric, winter coats are one of the most gratifying garments to buy. Essential, sumptuous and eye-catching, statement coats effortlessly transform our winter silhouettes. While countless, carefully assembled outfi ts lay hidden behind them, a single winter coat provides effortless style for the whole season and beyond.
Well worth investing in, a winter coat is the statement garment everyone sees and the January sales are a great time to make that investment purchase with designer styles and luxury fabrics available at budget prices. But beware of fl eeting trends. With three months of winter coat weather already behind us, the January coat purchase really should last throughout the 2014 winter season too. Yes some seductive new styles have hit the high street this year - sleeveless coats and high shine materials
like PVC - and it’s easy to be tempted. Discount prices might offset their three to four month life expectancy but keep in mind that their appearance in the 2014 collections is not guaranteed.
Often expensive and diffi cult to store, a winter coat is best cherished and adored. If you’re planning to make a long term investment and - most importantly - commitment to a single coat, look for classic detailing and trends that have proven staying power. Military, cocoon and boyfriend styles are still very modern but are built to last. Look for interesting, quirky detailing with a classic twist and think carefully about the types of outfi t you usually wear.
Oversize on the shoulders to wrap you up warm, cocoon coats taper gently between the upper thighs and knees and look best with slim, tapered trousers or skinny jeans to balance their proportions. Long sleeves are the most practical but cropped three-quarter sleeves are ultra-chic when teamed with vintage inspired elbow-length gloves. Cocoon coats are made most feminine by pastel palettes and soft wools. First appearing in Balenciaga’s 1950’s
collections, today’s cocoon coats feature lapels, crewe or high funnel necks and work best with heels.
The boyfriend coat broadly shares the oversize look of the cocoon but has a more boxy cut throughout the sleeves and length. Think your other-half’s smart overcoat and you won’t be far wrong. Minimal, gentlemanly detailing such as a slim collar or cuffs bring elegance to the look making it a sophisticated alternative for dressy occasions too. You can emphasise the look
with mannish trousers and brogues or wear with a pencil skirt that’s slightly longer in the hemline.
As for the military trench coat, it’s been back on the catwalks for so long it’s almost become a wardrobe staple. Reinvented each season with refreshing new colours, patterns and fabrics, the military coat is big on details. Large lapels, epaulettes and often double breasted with feature buttons, the military trench emphasises the waist with a buckled or knotted belt for extra cinching power. Practical and fl exible it can be worn with most outfi ts and easily goes from town to country with a pair of sleek riding boots.
If you usually wear skirts, a vintage inspired coat is a splendid option too. Collarless with a crew neck, cinched waist and fl owing skirt, the 1950s infl uenced coat works equally well with dresses and slim trousers. A traditional (faux) fur coat is also a great option for fans of the pencil skirt, complete with war time glamour. Classic and eternal this 1940s style works best with simple outfi ts and can be dressed up with vintage brooches or dressed down with relaxed jeans and fl ats.
With plenty of investment options to choose from the question this January is not likely to be, should you commit to a new coat but which one should you commit to? Try not to rush in on a purchase though. This isn’t a fl eeting romance, this is love. Pick something you adore and it will go from season to season with you.

and nectarine fl ower early, so take the potted trees indoors until April to protect from winter damage.
• Apply winter tree washes to fruit trees to keep them healthy. This should be an oil based wash to kill off overwintering pests. Prune back your wisteria shoots to about 10cm (4inch) as this encourages more fl owering in the summer months.
• Keep your Cyclamen fl owering by removing dead heads and yellowing leaves.
• Any remaining pot plants that have not been frozen can be wrapped in bubble wrap.
• Frozen plants should be moved to a sheltered spot in the greenhouse or porch to see if they survive.
• To get healthy raspberry plants, trim back “lanky” growth to about 15cm above your highest wire.
• Force your rhubarb by lifting the plant crown with compost and covering with a pot or polythene to exclude light. You should be able to pick young stems in about 6 weeks.
• Do a fi nal winter prune of fruit trees, removing crossed branches, diseased, dead or dying parts.
• As winter proceeds the last fallen leaves may get waterlogged on the lawn and won’t be pulled under by worms, so get the rake and remove them to the compost bin.
• After heavy snowfall, use a brush to help remove snow from branches weighed down on bushes and shrubs or risk them snapping leaving them exposed to disease.
• Don’t forget to feed the birds as during cold snaps the insects don’t appear and they struggle to fi nd enough food. Try not to put out bread as this is not good for them as the energy content is low. Bacon fat or seeds offer a bigger boost to keep them alive

COMMISSIONER SEEKS PUBLIC’S VIEWS ON POLICE AND BUDGET PLANSOne year into his four year Police and Crime Plan, Police and Crime Commissioner Paddy Tipping is consulting the people of Nottinghamshire from December to ensure that both his plan and budget refl ect their views and expectations.“I said from the outset that my plan was not written in stone, and I now want to refresh it where necessary,” said Mr Tipping. “By continuing to consult victims and citizens I can stay in tune with their policing and community needs. I depend
enormously on public opinion to ensure that we get it right – and that can sometimes mean keeping our residents safe from crime by moving the goal posts.”Questions being asked include the rate of importance respondents give to the Police and Crime Plan’s seven priorities; whether they would be prepared to continue their support by paying a little more towards policing; and where they feel further savings should be made. “We want to know if the priorities are still relevant to them, what they want us to focus on and are they prepared to invest more in policing through a small increase in the amount of council tax that is paid towards policing,” Mr Tipping explained.The increase proposed would be 1.96%, which means that for the majority of households across the city and the county, this will be less than a penny a day. He went on to say: “When we did our budget consultation last year, road safety issues such as
parking, speeding and cycling were raised as a major concern and that was reiterated at meetings I’ve held throughout the year, so I’m interested in people’s comments on their key priorities.“Financing our policing service continues to be a challenge as we need to save £11.8m in 2014/15 and another £10.8m in 2015/16,” he pointed out. “This means that it is even more vital that we spend our taxpayers’ money wisely. With that in mind, we need to know where they want us to spend any savings that are achieved by making effi ciencies in some areas.”The Commissioner developed his plan’s seven priorities by consulting with and listening to people who live and work in the county. They are to:• Protect, support and respond to victims, witnesses and
vulnerable people• Improve the effi ciency, accessibility and effectiveness of
criminal justice processes• Focus on those local areas that are most affected by crime
and antisocial behaviour• Reduce the impact of drugs and alcohol on crime and
antisocial behaviour• Reduce the threat from organised crime• Prevent offending, early intervention and reduce reoffending• Spend your money wisely.

ELDERLY RESIDENTSHave you or your elderly relatives or neighbours been approached by burglars claiming to be from a utility company? Residents in Nottinghamshire are being urged to take care with doorstep callers this Christmas, after two burglaries in which men claimed to be from ‘the Waterboard’.An elderly woman opened the door of her home to three men who told her they were from ‘the Waterboard’.Two of these men distracted her by fi lling up a number of saucepans with water in the kitchen, while the other went upstairs and looked through her belongings. They later left on foot with a large amount of cash. The victim was not injured, but left distressed, and police are now asking neighbours or relatives of elderly people to look out for them during the festive season to stop intrusions into their home. If an elderly neighbour or relative reports a suspicious caller, don’t let it go unreported as somebody else nearby may become the next victim. Always lock your doors and windows, even if you are in.Check who is at the door, either through a spy hole or a window, and never answer the door if you are in any doubt about the caller. If you do answer the door, ask to see identifi cation, and phone the company they are reporting from to verify. If you are in any doubt, ask the caller to make an appointment to return at a later date when you can arrange to be in the house with someone else. If you or you know someone who has been a victim of a crime of this nature, or if you have been approached in your home in a similar way, we would like to hear from you. Friends of Tippings Wood As ever, we are desperately looking for new volunteers. An interesting question was asked, ‘Why are volunteers needed to cut back trees and undergrowth? Why not just leave the forest to get on with it? The debate about the proposed sale of Forestry Commission land made more people are think about our forests. A forest often includes large tracts of open land, heath land, also a valuable habitat, but may not contain woodland. Woods are different altogether. The wildlife of deciduous woodland is specifi c and contributes to our history and culture and woodland. The key to the healthiest and oldest woodland is that it has been cut down,‘coppiced’ and regrown. It is one of the most perfectly sustainable resources and ecosystems known to man. Coppiced trees last much longer than those left uncut. Our small woodland of Tippings Wood it is constantly maintained by a small, but dedicated group of volunteers. But we need more help. Blidworth Parish Council (BPC)Our Annual “Switch on Event” at Blidworth Welfare, combined with a Christmas Market, both of which went from 12 Noon through to 4.30pm was well attended. Santa arrived on his Sleigh and went to the Grotto, where he was assisted by two cadets to present presents. The Climbing Wall was on-site together with a Stilts-man / Balloonist. On stage we had performances from Blidworth Welfare Band, the Blidworth Oaks Choir & a local trio called “Ragged Rascals“. We had about 15 Charity Stalls in the Concert Room, together with several Commercial Stores in the adjoining Function Room some others outdoors. At 4.30 pm the new Xmas Lights were already on & they provided a wonderful display. Overall it was an excellent day and we thank Blidworth Welfare for hosting the event, together with all those who did their bit in making it so successful.On Wednesday 4 December we promoted our Annual
Pensioners Party at Blidworth Welfare catering for 93 residents. To start the afternoon Rev. Hazel Robinson said Grace and we provided Sherry and a 3 course meal. Then entertainment from the Joseph Whitaker Band & Blidworth Oaks School Choir, to rapturous applause. We fi nished with a raffl e. Again it was an excellent event & our thanks go to Blidworth Welfare for hosting the event, caterers, B J Bakery and all the assistance from Blidworth Cadets. Finally, following the awful winter weather last year & all its road problems, BPC has now received its stock of grit salt for the grit bins in Blidworth. This is for us to ensure we can keep our main village streets open. RBL Blidworth & RainworthNOVEMBER POPPY APPEAL.I would like to thank everyone in our district who helped towards our Poppy Appeal this year. We managed to collect £7,304.81. REMEMBRANCE AND ARMISTICE DAYS.The main service was at Rainworth, when our Branch paraded at the memorial in St Simon and St Judes church, with service taken by Rev Hazel Robinson. A smaller service was held at the Blidworth War Memorial.School children were invited to attend our service at St Simons and St Judes Church on Armistice day. Over 70 children, teachers and parents were present. Each school laid wreaths. ROYAL BRITISH LEGIONPlease note that we would be happy to come to any event you are holding next year with our stocks and a stall to raise not only money for our Poppy Appeal but also to raise your awareness of the Royal British Legion. £1000 prize won on Cornwater Club LotteryThe lucky owner of number 244 won the fi rst £1000 prize to be awarded through the Cornwater Club Lottery. Staff and members right, celebrated the milestone in the lottery’s short history. The Cornwater Club Lottery was launched in June 2013 to provide much needed funds for the Cornwater Clubs, an old people’s club which provides friendship and stimulating activities and aims to prevent older people becoming socially isolated in their own homes. Every week a lucky winner receives £100 and twice a year the prize increases to £1000. The money generated through the lottery goes towards club funds.With the County Council and Charitable Trusts reducing available grants, monies are very tight. We need to raise just under 90% of the clubs operating costs ourselves; the Cornwater Club Charity Shop in Mansfi eld and the Friends Promise Programme contribute towards this sum, however, we do still have a shortfall. We have achieved one third of our Lottery sales target but further sales are necessary. News from Ravens Lodge ScoutsAutumn arrived and went. We started with our annual Bonfi re Night week when all sections celebrated the Guy with a fi re, food and some fi reworks, followed
by an Explorer visit to the Manifold Valley on the Staffs/Derby’s border and to Thor’s Cave. (photo left)
One of our Explorers, Jade Walker, is one of four from Mansfi eld District to be selected to go to the World Jamboree in Japan in 2015. We will shortly be
embarking on activities to help fundraising for the nearly £3,000 it costs for her to go.
The Cubs are also engaged in talking to Cubs in a different Country as part of their Global Challenge. They have made contact with a Pack from Mobile, Alabama and are currently writing to them to fi nd out what they do at their cubs and their likes and dislikes etc.
The Scouts have been Go Karting at Amen Corner in North Notts, and preparing for an expedition at the end of the Month when they are either cycling or walking from Ravenshead and Farnsfi eld to Ollerton as part of their Outdoors Challenge award.
All sections had a good turnout for Remembrance Day in
November when they paraded from the Shops to St Peter’s Church for a service of Remembrance led by Rev. Chris Rattenberry. As usual, I am always on the look-out for new Leaders to bolster our team. So if you have book-keeping/accounting skills, knowledge of taxation rules, fund raising experience, building maintenance talents, or just wish to be part of the team, let me know and we will be happy to welcome you on board.
Finally, we now have our paper bank back. It is a big blue commercial wheelie bin at the front of the building. Takes only newspaper and newspaper type magazines (not glossy ones) No envelopes, books, glossy mags etc. We still have the textile bank, in the Car Park at Raven’s Lodge. These earn us much needed funds so come and deposit all your clothing with us.

Rotary Club of Sherwood ForestA Vision for the future – It was our Sherwood Forest’s turn to receive a visit from the Rotary Midlands District team to help us plan future actions and direction. Consensus was reached by club members on several ways forward in the future and included our wish to support a major project. It was a really good stimulating evening and at the end our President was presented with the result of our deliberations.

Mind over matter – Have you ever considered Hypnotherapy? Nicole Huthwaite gave an enlightening talk on the benefi ts of Hypnotherapy. She explained how it may help with anxiety issues, anger management, confi dence building, coping with loss, exam nerves and other problems that people have to face and deal with.
Visit to Hodsock Priory – The Rotary Club of Worksop Dukeries held their 32nd Birthday Charter at Hodstock where members from our club joined their celebration.
Remembrance Sunday – Members of Sherwood Forest laid wreaths at village war memorials at Remembrance Day Services at Edwinstowe, Norwell, Ollerton and Wellow.
Christmas Charitable Collections – on the 21st, 22nd & 23rd December we
are looking for volunteers who would be willing to spend an hour or so with Father Christmas, and us, helping with our Christmas Collecting. If you can help, Charities and Rotary would be grateful. So please make contact by phone or email.

Blow your Trumpet!We are Sherwood Forest Brass band and are based at Clipstone welfare and offer free tuition to all ages wanting to learn a brass instrument. We are totally self funding and work hard at concerts and contests to raise funds to support our work. As a training band we mostly attract youngsters but occasionally we have older people wanting to re-learn or come back to their music. We rehearse every Monday at Clipstone welfare at 6.30pm for beginners and 7pm for everyone else. All are welcome to come along and have a listen and a toot! Farnsfi eld & District RBLNew Committee meeting“December’s meeting of the Farnsfi eld Branch of the Royal British Legion was the fi rst under its revised committee, with Claire Lester taking over as Secretary , Simon Lowe as Treasurer and Richard Guard as Membership Secretary. Poppy Appeal SuccessThe Poppy Appeal has so far raised nearly £4,000, with several collecting boxes yet to be counted – we are well on the way to beating last year’s total of £5,900. A ‘thank you’ card had been received from Mrs Jeanne Williams, our Saluting Offi cer for the Remembrance Day Parade - she was very proud to take the salute as the fi rst lady to do so and certainly the oldest at 92 - well done, Jeanne! On a sadder note, we were sorry to hear of the untimely death of another of our members Mrs Christina Jones who had been a familiar sight in the district as a member of staff at a number of public houses – our sympathies go out to husband Stephen and daughter Amy. A quiz with a seasonal theme was won by Nigel Hamilton and Bob Burrows and everyone tucked in to mince pies to round off the evening. Our next meeting will be at Farnsfi eld Cricket Club at 7.30pm on Tuesday 7th January 2014 and thereafter on the fi rst Tuesday of each month – new members will be made most welcome and you don’t have to be ex-service to join.”

Church Services Church Article: Christmas and New Year are times of fun and parties, booze and presents, family and friends, too much to eat and having a great time. Everyone has such a wonderful time. It’s just like all those adverts on the television promised with all those happy smiling faces. Isn’t it?The Dukeries Foodbank in Ollerton only opened 9 months ago and has already fed over 600 people (including 260 children) with 3½ tonnes of food. They are stocking up on seasonal goodies to add to the December bags. Some of us won’t be over eating or drinking, they’ll be lucky to eat at all. Vouchers are available from Health visitors and Sure Starts and some schools across our reason. Nobody needs be hungry.There are many who live alone, and sadly, many are lonely, hardly speaking to anybody from one week to the next. They won’t be surrounded by friends and laughter. And they have neighbours. Are there such people living on your street? Are there clubs or groups you could help them to join? Nobody needs be lonely.There are many facing the New Year without the support of their life partners, or parents or children. At party times, their absence is heightened, especially if this is the fi rst year without them. In the churches, we take so many funerals that we are all too aware of the pain of loss. Some of our faces are not smiling but crying. If you know people like this, give them a hug this Christmas.But I hope you were able to fi nd some fun, share some smiles, swap a gift or two. And maybe remember that we celebrate God with us, sharing our hunger, our pain, our loneliness and our loss. Worth celebrating?God be with you in 2014.David Greenwood (01623 491474)
