Mark Spencer MPSherwood MP Mark Spencer Working Tirelessly to Save Jobs at Local PitAs many of you will know we have been hit with the devastating news that UK Coal intend to close Thoresby Colliery over the next 18 months.
I have visited the colliery many times since becoming an MP, both above ground and below. In November last year the chancellor and I visited Thoresby to announce the government’s commitment to fund the concessionary coal allowance, this valuable allowance is paid to former miners to provide help with their heating bills. Many retired colliery workers would have lost this entitlement had the government not stepped in and defended their interests, and I am very proud to have stood up and helped the people I represent.
Therefore I was very disappointed to hear that we may lose 90 years of history and many jobs if the colliery closes. There is still a great deal of coal at Thoresby but unfortunately the price of coal dropped so rapidly in recent
years that keeping the pit open just isn’t economically viable at current market prices.
I have been engaging in talks with UK Coal, the Union of Democratic Mineworkers, the Government and investors to try and fi nd a solution to this crisis. Keeping the pit open for a longer period may allow the price of coal to rise again making it fi nancially viable to continue on the site. This will only be possible if work continues on the next face beyond the one they are working now. UK Coal have assured me of their commitment to fi nd a solution to allow the pit to stay open for as long as possible.
It is worth pointing out that negotiations and discussions are ongoing and it is still a very fl uid situation so I will endeavour to get the best possible circumstances for our
pit and for my constituents.
I can assure local people that I continue to work every hour I can fi ghting to protect jobs at the site for as long as possible. As always if you would like to chat to me or have any issues or queries please drop me an email at [email protected] or call my offi ce on 0115 968 1186.

Brighter Futures Education Feature by Jill BatorTop Tips for Time ManagementWith GCSE and A Level examinations season here, one of the most crucial parts of studying and preparing for examinations is to help our children manage their time appropriately. This isn’t always easy in a world of mobile communications, social networking and other distractions in the summer such as (hopefully) good weather and sporting events on the television. There are 1,440 minutes in a day which should give our children plenty of time to study in but with so many “time bandits” encroaching on ours and their time below are some top tips with help with time management:
● Switch off mobile phones when studying. This also provides something to look forward after an hour or two of studying to see who has been in contact and what is happening in the world. ● Encourage children to get a good night’s sleep. It can be
really diffi culty to concentrate when tired and learning is therefore disrupted. ● Allocate a set time of the day for studying and stick to this. ● Let others know not to contact or disturb your children when
they are studying. ● Work out with your child how long they can concentrate
before needing a break. A suggestion is 30 minutes study followed by a 10 minute break. ● Encourage your child to use a record book or diary. Creating
a calendar or programme of study will clearly identify the times for work and the times for fun. ● Find out the best time of day for learning for your child and
help them plan their study calendar around this.Remember, we are all individuals and learn in different ways so our children may not fi nd the study techniques you used useful. Talk to your child and fi nd out what works for them and then help them allocate time for study.

Provado Lawn Grub Killer has now been BANNED!
Owing to the level of concern across Europe about the collapse of bee populations, the European Commission has restricted the use of pesticides which have been linked to the decline in bee populations.
It is only Provado Lawn Grub Killer that has been banned because it was a liquid product which was available to the public. When Provado was applied on to lawns, there was a danger it could drift on to adjacent pollinating plants if not applied carefully. As a result bees could be put at risk. The treatment we use is a professional insecticide and is a granular product, only available to professional users, which is much easier to target on to the lawn area only, and is far less likely to drift than a liquid product.
Merit Turf is a professional-grade product and is not available to the general public. Our employees hold the Certicates of Competence in the Safe Handling of Pesticides required by law to apply this.
So how can Four Seasons Lawn Care still treat lawns for Chafer Grubs?

Book Review: Mr MercedesBy Stephen KingRelease Date: 3 Jun 2014
A cat-and-mouse suspense thriller featuring a retired homicide detective who’s haunted by the few cases he left open, and by one in particular - the pre-dawn slaughter of eight people among hundreds gathered in line for the opening of a jobs fair when the economy was guttering out. Without warning, a lone driver ploughed through the crowd in a stolen Mercedes. The plot is kicked into gear when Bill Hodges receives a letter in the mail, from a man claiming to be the perpetrator. He taunts Hodges with the notion that he will strike again.
Hodges wakes up from his depressed and vacant retirement, hell-bent on preventing that from happening.
Brady Hartfi eld lives with his alcoholic mother in the house where he was born. And he’s preparing to kill again.
Only Hodges, with a couple of misfi t friends, can apprehend the killer in this high-stakes race against time. Because Brady’s next mission, if it succeeds, will kill or maim hundreds, even thousands.

Di’s Travels; April Visit to Marrakech, Morocco - the bustling ‘red city’ aflame with colourful souks, story tellers on every corner, winding spice filled
alleyways and traditional time spent music everywhere you go.
Food has to be at the heart of many a holiday and certainly at Marrakech airport many travellers return carrying a large brown round pot with a pointed hat style lid? A ‘tagine’ is at the heart of Moroccan cooking both the name for the delicious dish and the pot in which the meal is made. For a taste of Moroccan cuisine see our Facebook page ( https://www.facebook.com/theatlasdiscoveryholidaycompany) for a traditional lemon chicken recipe and follow us on Twitter ( @atlasdiscover )
For those that are following my business travels you may recall another favourite of mine are the freshly prepared honey filled pancakes- upon this visit a much needed treat after a Gatwick Easy jet night flight arriving at Marrakech Airport at 10.30 am. I have recently discovered www.flightcentre.co.uk; both ABTA and ATOL registered who offer a price beat deal and we are happy to direct our clients to their team, especially great for late bookings! A beautiful fresh day met me and after excitedly (and crazily) picking up a hire car at the airport, I set off to meet up with the Atlas Team. However it was the biggest Moroccan holiday of the year so I shakily drove thorough a mix of pipping yellow taxis, families of at least 3 on a moped, street vendors, bicycles and of course a few donkeys! Hey when in Morocco do as the Moroccans do and just pip your horn and go!
Marrakech is a ‘step back in time’ city and visitors come from all over Europe; with a recent increase in worldwide travellers. Britain’s are the 3rd most popular visitors now following France and Spain. People do feel safe and I certainly am always happy to wander the medina, taking a break in one of the central cafes and watch this different world go by.
We would love you to join us on one of our Atlas Discovery Tours and whether you choose
a Retreat Escape, Cultural Discovery or a Challenging Adventure through the Saghrou Mountains or Sahara Desert all our tours start from Marrakech. We offer either a two or three night stay in a central city Riad, with beautiful open air gardens and a swimming pool. Plus many of our Riads offer a delightful spa and massage*
Marrakech, Morocco’s imperial city is famous for its Koutoubia Minaret, Ben Youssef Medrassa (Coranique School) the Medina and the Djemaa el Fna Square. We do not take you to the city centre oil clinics a favourite with many tour operators as we support the Titrate Oil Cooperative, a small village project managed by a Moroccan lady called Imane who works with ten widowed ladies to produce a 100% bio oil, renowned for its internal digestion and external anti aging benefits. This offers these ladies an income for a better quality of life. See you next month for my next adventure and an insight into the Moroccan Real Life.

We would love you to join us on one of our Atlas Discovery Tours and whether you choose
from Marrakech. We offer either a two or three night stay in a central
Minaret, Ben Youssef Medrassa (Coranique School) the Medina and the Djemaa el Fna Square. We do not take you to the city centre oil clinics a favourite with many tour operators as we support the Titrate Oil Cooperative, a small village project managed by a Moroccan lady

Friends of Tippings Wood Volunteers Urgently Needed!
Sadly, we no longer have an active ‘Friends of Tippings Wood’ group. Age defeats the best of us! The fi rst priority is to keep footpaths open and the site free of litter. Please collect litter, even if it’s not yours and cut overhanging branches if they are a hazard. We will be arranging a ‘hit squad’ to deal with pressing issues. Are you a ‘Friend’? Can you help? We will be looking at training courses to encourage volunteers to join the group and keep Tippings Wood accessible to the community. Please ring 07950 646620 or email [email protected]

Blidworth & District Historical & Heritage SocietyApril’s meeting, our main speaker, Kevin Topham, talked about oil production at the Dukes Wood oil fi eld at Eakring. In the midst of WWII we were desperately short of fuel for the war, the USA sent 42 oil workers and three sets of oil drilling equipment. Within the year they were producing enough fuel grade crude oil to start planning the invasion of mainland Europe. After the break, Eric Hall continued our presentation of archive photographs. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, 6th May, in the Function Room of Blidworth Welfare, Mansfi eld Road, Blidworth. Following this Alan Higgins will present a number of previously unseen photographs. Our next 3 meetings will be;6th May - Mr Clarke - The Pentrich Uprising.

Even an odd hour or so per week would help take the strain off our stalwarts . Please contact our Clerk if you can help – 01623490358.

King John Returns to Sherwood
The year is 1214 and King John is staying at his
royal palace at Clipstone. Will the local Barons and the descendants of the Viking warrior farmers accept his new laws and taxes ... or will they refuse to pay and be outlawed?
Following the success of last year’s Viking Spring Thing, The Friends of Thynghowe and The Forestry Commission welcome the spectacular Regia Anglorum re-enactors back to Sherwood Pines. Over the weekend of 17th and 18th May they will create a living history camp, whilst in the arena the confl icts of 1214 will be acted out. Watch the king, barons and knights mounted on
horseback recreate local events from 800 years ago.
This is a free event. The usual Sherwood Pines car parking charges apply, £1 for an hour or £4 for the whole day. The living history camp will run between 10am and 4pm with arena displays throughout the day.
Come along and discover more about the remarkable past of Sherwood Forest!
More information on www.thynghowe.org.uk and www.facebook.com/Thynghowe
The Friends of Thynghowe are a local history group investigating the past of the Forest in the parishes of Warsop, Clipstone, Edwinstowe and Budby. We are keen to share the stories from the history of Sherwood with everybody.
The Cornwater Club Great great grandma Evelyn Christmas celebrated her 100th birthday at the Cornwater Club with family and fellow club members on Wednesday 2nd April.Evelyn was greeted by members and
volunteers singing her “Happy Birthday” and was presented with an array of cards and fl owers. A very spritely lady for her age, Evelyn took part in the usual Movement to Music activity and enjoyed her favourite meal of fi sh and chips, cooked by Cornwater Club cook, Julie Hannah. Evelyn’s daughter, Irene, brought a cake and champagne to toast the birthday girl! During the afternoon, Evelyn enjoyed
a spot of dancing to some of her favourite tunes.Evelyn Christmas spent most of her life in St Albans where she met and married her husband and they raised a family together. She moved to Ravenshead fourteen years ago, after her husband passed away, to be near her daughter.
Evelyn became a Cornwater Club member soon after it ran its pilot scheme in 2001; she is one of the longest serving members. Evelyn said she “had a fabulous time”. Celebrations will continue at the weekend when Evelyn will be taken out for a meal by fellow family members.Media contact: Melissa Blythe 07854 156826 or email [email protected]: Evelyn with her telegram from the Queen.

Rotary Club of Sherwood ForestThis month we have given out £500 to two groups that help the young people of Edwinstowe. Responding to requests from help from the 1st Edwinstowe Scouts who are busy raising much needed money to provide a safe and secure place in which to keep their equipment. They wrote to Rotary to see if we could help them out. The 1st Edwinstowe Scouts play a very valuable role in the Edwinstowe community and the Scouts and Cubs spend evenings learning new skills with the reward for being presented with badges that are sewn onto their uniforms. Such early learning together forms part of valuable education teaching and preparing young boys and girls for their adult place in the community. Many Cubs and Scouts go on to become the leaders of tomorrow and Rotary were delighted to present them with £250 towards their new storage facility.

The other group Rotary were delighted to give £250 are the 2nd Edwinstowe Brownies. It is 100 years since the Brownie group were formed and they are celebrating their 100th Birthday by taking 24 girls on a pack holiday to Mablethorpe
in May. The young members are fi nding many ways to raise suffi cient money for them to go and Rotary has helped with a donation towards the cost of transport. Both the Brownies and Scouts are helping themselves raise money by taking part in our Spring Prize Draw where they are able to keep the majority of the money raised through their raffl e ticket sales.

One of our Club evenings this month was at the Bengal
Spice Indian Restaurant on Forest Road Ollerton. Members and friends chose from a special menu and profi ts from the evening went to The Rotary Foundation our Charity that provides matched funding for charitable projects
organised by clubs.
Blow your Trumpet! We are Sherwood Forest Brass band and are based at Clipstone welfare and offer free tuition to all ages wanting to learn a brass instrument. We are totally self funding and work hard at concerts and contests to raise funds to support our work. As a training band we mostly attract youngsters but occasionally we have older people wanting to re-learn or come back to their music. We rehearse every Monday at Clipstone welfare at 6.30pm for beginners and 7pm for everyone else. All are welcome to come along and have a listen and a toot! Our ages range from 7 through to 70!c/o Sam Heartfi eld, PR Offi cer Sherwood forest brass.
Farnsfi eld & District RBL“One of the many problems faced by the volunteers whose excellent work supports many of our charities, including the Royal British Legion, is that they sometimes fi nd themselves stifl ed by so called “red tape”. Many of the rules and regulations that were obviously intended for people in business, to protect their staff and their customers, also apply in many instances to the work that the volunteers do, e.g. the former CRB checks for people working with children. Many volunteers sometimes think “it’s too much fuss and I can’t be bothered” which, of course is a shame. No such sentiments from this Branch though, when it was pointed out that those members who will be “fl ipping the burgers” at our annual Armed Forces BBQ (to be held on Sat 21 June, tickets from Cynthia Carr on 01623 792332) need to comply with the current rules on food safety. To this end, nine members attended a Food Safety course held recently and run by branch member Margaret Baggott of Ravenshead. We are hopeful that all of them have passed the course and can wear their chef’s hats on the day, safe in the knowledge that the food they serve will be wholesome and healthy. If you wish to help out on the day in other ways, the easiest thing to do is become a member of the branch. We meet on the fi rst Tuesday of every month at 7.30pm at Farnsfi eld Cricket Club and you don’t have to be ex-service to join.”C/O Trevor Wilds, Chairman, Farnsfi eld & District Branch (BR0264) Royal British Legion. 01623 882521

Church Article
As the weather starts to turn warmer (hopefully) and the season of spring merges with the summer many people
start to think about doing work in their gardens and homes. There is something very satisfying about deciding to tackle a job, whether that be cleaning out the cupboards in the kitchen, weeding a fl ower bed or building a conservatory. Even better is getting to the end of the job and sitting down with a celebratory cup of tea (or whatever) and giving yourself a pat on the back!
The Bible tells us that when God made the world he declared it to be good and stopped and had a rest (it doesn’t mention anything about a congratulatory cup of tea, but I like to imagine it!).
I like the idea of celebrating the achievements of life and jobs well done, not just the big ones, but the small ones as well. We don’t have to wait for particular occasions to celebrate, but can make the everyday things in life into a cause for joy.
