That’s because most mums sold in the fall are not particularly hardy. For the last several years, we have been carrying a handful of mums that are truly hardy. They have been generally listed as Dendranthema, but the nomenclature seems to be chang- ing, and some sources have switched back to Chrysanthemum. These hardy mums bloom quite late, generally in late September at the earliest, but often starting to bloom in mid-October. It is wonderful to have a mum blooming so late, and have it last well into November, but most people want their mums to start blooming a little earlier than that. These hardy types all have a daisy type of mum flower. But now, we have a new group of hardy mums known as the Igloo Series. The Igloo mums have a 2” decorative flower that is less daisy-like, grow into a spherical or mounding habit, and start blooming in mid-September. There are five colors—yellow, bronze, white, red and purple, with names of ‘Sunny Igloo’, ‘Warm Igloo’, ‘Frosty Igloo’, ‘Rosy Igloo’, and ‘Cool Igloo’. They are hardy to 20 degrees below zero. We are looking forward to seeing the bloom on our first crop of Igloo Mums this fall. We have them in three sizes: $7.99 (a one- gallon pot with one plant), $14.99 (a two-gallon pot with three plants), and a monster mum (a three-gallon pot with four plants). These Mums Are Hardy—The Igloo Series

Over the years, the phrase “Hardy Mums” has been replaced with the term “Garden Mums”. That’s because most mums sold in the fall are not particularly hardy. RETAIL HOURS: We will be closed on Labor Day, Monday, September 6. Otherwise, we will be open Monday

through Saturday, 8:00 to 5:00, through October 9, 2010.

We carried Isabel Bloom sculptures for quite a few years when we fi rst started out. Several years ago, the Isabel Bloom business changed ownership, and for a while, the sculptures were not available wholesale. They even dabbled with having their product made in China for a while, but now all production is back in the Quad Cities. We have picked up this quality line again, and are very happy to do so. There are several new sculptures available and some new fi nishes. We especially like a fi nish called “Garden Moss Rose”, which is a darker, more rustic, garden-oriented look.

Some of the pieces are available in an optional multi-colored fi nish that might have color just on a fl ower or a ladybug, for example. There is a limited edition item, Blue Bird, which is multi-colored,

and is only available to us in 2010, so we purchased several in hopes that we might have a few to carry into

next spring. It is a real cutie, so you might want to grab one while it is still available.

Isabel Bloom is back at Hornbaker Gardens

We now have a supply of three plants that were either in very short supply this spring, or were not then available at all:

‘Bloomerang’ Lilac—We had a few of this reblooming dwarf lilac on hand this spring, but not very many, and only in a small size. We now have a few in a more mature 5-gallon size for $49.99, and several nice-looking plants in a two-gallon size for $29.99. As I write this, they are going into bloom again. They are included in our 25% off sale.

‘Vanilla Strawberry’ Hydrangea—I mentioned this fi ne, new hydrangea in the spring newsletter, not realizing that we wouldn’t be able to get our hands

on any until the middle of the summer. Our supply is good now, and they are nice, full plants for $49.99. They are just starting to bloom, with huge white fl owers that will turn pink and then red, and will hold their color well into the fall. New white fl owers will keep appearing, keeping a multi-colored show going until late fall. Red stems add winter interest. This plant is included in our 25% off sale.

‘Ruby Spider’ Daylily—This daylily, with huge 9” bright red spider fl owers, has become one of the most popular in our fi eld. We sold out of it early, but have been able to buy in an additional

supply. We potted up a good supply of nice double fans to sell this fall for those of you who were unable to get some during the season. They sell for $15.00.
