SYMBOLS AND PAGEANTRY
COMMENCEMENT Commencement is the special occasion that provides public recognition of aca
demic achievement of students. The diploma is an official document certifying the
completion of curricula required for an academic degree.
THE PROMINENCE OF THE MACE The mace, carried by the senior marshal to lead the ceremonial procession, is a
symbol of authority. The University of Baltimore mace is 42 inches taU , crafted of
silver and wood, and bears the seal of the University .
HONORS DESIGNATION Undergraduate students are awarded degrees summa cllm laude, magna cum
laude, or cum laude based on their cumulative grade point avel·age.
Surmna Cum Laude-with the greatest praise
Phrase used to signify graduation with highest honors, 3.90 grade point average.
Magna CUlll Laude--with great praise
Phrase used to signify graduation with high honors, 3.75 grade point average.
Cum Laude-with praise
Phrase used to signify graduation with honors, 3.50 grade point average.
CANDIDATES FOR DEGREES At this Commencement, degl'ees al'e conferred upon persons who completed requirements during the summer or faU, 1997 terms. Prior to the printing of this program, howevel", it was not possible to determine who had completed degree requirements. The listing of candidates and academic honors is therefore tentative. The official transcript of the University, issued dil'ectly from the Registrar's Office, is testimony to the possession of a degree.

"These are times in which a genius

call out great virtues."
Ahigail Adams- Letter (0 John Quincy Adams Oanuary 19, 1780)
To the Members of the Graduating Class,
Today your names will be added to the long list ofmen and women who have earned degrees in liberal arts, business, or law at the University of Baltimore. The earliest entries in this log date from 1928, when the University graduated 38 students who had completed the three-year evening law program. (Later consolidation with the Baltimore College ofCommerce extended this list back to the 1880s.) Now, 70 years after graduating its first class, University of Baltimore has more than 43,000 alumni.
But the significance ofthis occ:asion is not that you are one ofmany, but that you yourself have achieved a worthy goal. These commencement ceremonies are a public recognition of that accomplishment, and demonstrate the University's pride in your achievement. On behalf of the &c:ulty, administration, and alumni, congratulations.
