Editors Letter ( issue 7)

Hello! And welcome to my room, this is the only t ime a lot of you wil l get to see it! (haha)

I can’t believe its July already; I hope you are al l having a good summer (Apart from weather in Scotland). My brother recently left high school and he got an award for excellence, so proud of him!

I have had a Very busy month putting this issue together. This issue has the most reviews and pages of al l the issues so far. I also believe the word is spreading about “the Rockette”, I have been receiving CD/EP’s in post from Germany and Italy to name a few! I t ’s been rather excit ing.

Also I was lucky enough to get t ickets from my parents last year to see BonJovi, at Murryfield in June. I had been looking forward to i t since November. However as I couldn’t get to interview him, I decided to write about the gig instead.

I have also been at a launch party this month for “city DJs”. I knew one of the DJ’s and bands who was playing (Mike young & Everyday at Ten).

Due to not having enough bands free in September, I ’ve decided to wait t i l l next year to have “the Rockette” charity gig. However I have a lot of bands interested in playing! This wil l hopefully get more people who wil l have read the magazine and want to help support the charity involved.

I have also just booked t ickets to see “MakeThisRelate & Aspen Tide” at the ABC in Glasgow. Wil l be nice to catch up with the lads again, there a fun bunch of guys! Hopefully I wil l have some gossip for you from them over the next few months.

Everyday at Ten are next month’s cover story! Where you wil l get a chance to know the new members, hear about their next shows and more.. . I ’m lucky enough to be going bowling with the lads very soon!

Thanks for reading!

Danielle

Review of

Lost Without Cause ’ s

New EP

“Take Back Everything”

By Danielle Bangham

“Lost Without Cause” release their new EP “Take Back Everything”. The EP has 7 t racks in total , most ly fast upbeat numbers, with 1 or 2 s lower t racks. The band have gone through some changes and this i s their f i r st release under their current l ine-up. Each track has a very pop/rock feel , with a very ‘ less than Jake’ or ‘J immy Eat World’ sound.

Tr iggerThis t rack began with just a long, high tempo musical intro, featur ing drumming and guitar. When the vocals began al l I immediately thought, look out “J im Adkins” (J immy Eat World vocal ist) ! ! You’ l l have some competit ion now, S imon’s voice is taking over. I t ’s very catchy rhythm, fast pace and f low of the track are superb, a very upbeat t rack, with a s l ight hint of grunge.

Lost My MindLoved this t rack! I t was real easy to l i s ten to. The drumming and guitar ing was amazing throughout! This t rack was dif ferent to the f i rst , th is t ime Simon’s voice was supported by backing vocals, giv ing some nice harmonies. So do as the t i t le says and s i t back, relax and “lose your mind” to this t rack!!

LoserThis song has a very ear ly “Greenday” feel to i t , l ike the days of their “basket case” track. This t rack has a very basic intro, l ight guitar, soft drumming and softer vocals. Dur ing the chorus, drumming and guitar get a l i t t le louder. The vocals also k ick up a notch, but the track never gets “screamo”. This was my

favour i te t rack on the EP, I was hooked to this t rack f i rst t ime I heard i t !

You Won’t KnowLouder than the previous t rack, this has a s l ight “Fal l Out Boy” feel maybe due to the strumming at the start of the track. There is also more def ined guitar playing dur ing verses. Vocals are a lot deeper, but st i l l smooth dur ing this t rack. There is also a nice s lower s l ight ly or iental feel ing musical medley through the middle sect ion of the track, accompanied by l ight cymbal tapping. The lyr ics come crashing back in and see you through to the end of the track!

SenseThings are s lowed way down for this t rack. A nice s imple acoust ic t rack, with just S imon’s voice, with the support of a s ingle guitar. This t rack is a real change of pace on the EP. Real nice!! !

Come On!Things are speeded up again with this t rack. I t begins k inda l ike a ‘Bond (007)’ theme, but changes when the vocals are introduced. I t then has a catchy k inda “American Pie” feel to i t ! This one should get the crowd jumping!

Situat ionFast! I s probably the best word to descr ibe this t rack! The track begins with loud and violent guitar ing and fast drumming. S imon then joins in. This t rack has a heavier “Black Stone Cherry” k ind of feel . The momentum continues throughout the whole track. I t just never s lows down!!! 5

Armonight Interview

Lara, 24, Lead Guitar

F jord, 37, Guitar

Frens, 23, Bass

Hokuto, 29, Keys

Ricky, 25, Drums

What are your worst/favorite parts of being on tour? There are no worst th ings. Just a bi t of t i redness, at the end of the tour. The most awesome things are to play every and each night, see people involved in our music and many people jo in our fans crew, and discover ing new music real i t ies, that make us grow up, both as persons and music ians.

The Most powerful lyrics are? “ Into my world” and “ I lost my sereni ty” for sure, ta lk in ’ about our f i rst a lbum. There’s a song that won’ t be in no one of our albums, “Over the stars”, which is t ru ly loved by our fans.

What is the weirdest gift you have received from a fan?We haven’ t received any “weird” gi f t , ‘ t i l now. But the great th ing is when they ask us to s ign their copies of our album.

Which art ist would you l ike to collaborate with? With Cranberr ies and our great f r iends, the welsh rock band S.E.X.!

How do you relax when you’re not working? We are ALWAYS working, for our band! There’s not a second in our days that we don’ t spend thinking about Armonight. The most relaxing thing is to spend t ime al l together, and that ’s enough for us.

What plans do you have for the near future? There’s a summer tour on the hor izon, in the Uk: f rom the 20th to the 28th of August we’ l l be on the road, playing every night. We think we’ l l come back to wales in autumn, to have a short tour wi th S.E.X., who wi l l p lay wi th us at the Hobos in Br idgend on August, 27th. Maybe next year we’ l l reach the States, but who knows.. The only th ing that ’s sure is that we won’t stop moving.

Do you have any pre-gig rituals/Lucky items?

Page 9: therockette_-_issue_7

InterviewDrinking! (chorus) We don’ t have any r i tual , we trust in our music, and we just th ink about doing our best.

Is there anything you wish you could add to your band?We want to improve ourselves as much as possible. Music never stops and we must always be able to f ind out new ideas and be ready to make them become a good real i ty!

What genre of music do you consider your work to be? Who are your major inf luences? We play what we feel , so there are lots of inf luences. We’re pret ty open-minded. Even i f people always talk about us comparing us to Nightwish, Within Temptat ion, Evanescence, we play OUR music in OUR sty le, and we’re pret ty proud of i t !

How long have you al l known each other? How did you meet?

Armonight ’s story is qui te long. Fjord and Lara have known each other for

ages, and al l the other members jo ined l i t t le by l i t t le. We are

completely booked up since November 2010. We’re

c lose fr iends, and we al l th ink the same way, so i t doesn’ t matter how long we know each other, as long as we get on wel l together.

How does it make you feel, when you hear fans sing your lyrics back to you?I t ’s awesome! You can’ t imagine the sensat ions i t g ives us! We feel

exci ted, and this al lows us to have great shows,

leaving a piece of our souls on every stage we walk on!

Who writes your songs? Most of the songs are wr i t ten by

Fjord, the creator of the band. From now on the band wi l l work together

and each of us wi l l have his own part in song-making.

What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs? Do you think these topics wil l change over t ime?

Both music and lyr ics are about our feel ings and sensat ions. They are deeply auto-biographic and they depend on episodes and moments we l ived in our l ives. We don’ t know how they wi l l change in the future. . We’ l l d iscover i t wi th you!

Do you have any shows coming up?We have gigs booked t i l l February 2012. The most wonderful th ing wi l l be the “Passion on the road Tour” around the uk, in August. We don’ t miss the ideas, i t ’s just a matter of t ime and chances.

Tell us a random fact about yourself? We had the chance to play in Swiss, in March, and we found amazing people t ry ing to ta lk to us in i ta l ian, whi le we’ve t r ied to ta lk in german, and i t ’s been a mess! Engl ish is the global language, and i t has helped us in many many ways whi le abroad!

Any last words? We wait for you dur ing the tour. Look for us on myspace, Facebook and reverberat ion to know the dates of the gigs and fol low us! We wanna see you in f ront of the next stage!

The band RUDE CUTE came together at the beginning of 2010. The band is made up of members: Dave (vocals, guitar), Marc (guitar), Andi (bass) and Zoltan (drums). They draw Inf luences f rom bands such as Placebo, Smashing Pumpkins and other s imilar art ists. This brand new EP has a very unique sound. I wi l l admit i t wasn’t what I was expecting, far f rom it !

Track 1 - Lying HereThe song began with a basic yet catchy introduction, before the vocals begin. The vocals have a very edgy “rawness” to them. This t rack has a very “Smashing Pumpkins” meets “Blur” kind of sound but I also thought the vocals had a “Bowie” sound to them as well . A vibrant soundtrack pulsates throughout. A great sounding track.

Track 2 - New TattooLoved the beat at the beginning of the track! Very up tempo, compared with the f i rst t rack. I t had a placebo feel, part icular ly when the bass kicked in. At t imes the track had an 80’s synthesized feel to i t , but at other t imes a deeper rock sound! The lyr ics had a cool vibe going on. Made me want another tattoo!

Track 3 - Bui l t ForThe beginning of this t rack reminded me a bit of Kings of Leon, so they better watch their backs, with Rude Cute on the scene. S low start to this t rack, speeds up as i t gets further into the track. Dave’s vocals st i l l have a cool “Bowie” sound to them.

Track 4 - Take TimeAnother fast paced track. Catchy tune, punchy drumming, vibrant guitars, loud

lyr ics and simmering backing vocals, this t rack has them al l . “Take Time” and you too wi l l appreciate this t rack. I real ly l iked the quick pace of the track, i t never s lowed. A well-rounded track. I wanted to go and make cocktai ls , but I don’t know why? Send answers on a post card please!

Track 5 – About LeavingAnother t rack with an intro with an 80’s f lavour! Thereafter, when i t kicks i t up a bit , you go off in another direction completely. A more vigorous rocking sound now, with loud guitars, loud drums and loud vocals. The bl ippy, bl ippy bits do return again though and the to-ing and fro-ing between the two styles works very well .

Track 6 – SuspendingA much more mellow, s lower and al l instrumental t rack. Completely di f ferent f rom al l their other t racks on the EP. This gives some well needed respite f rom the constant fast pace so far on the EP.

Track 7 – My GoddessThe pace is picked up again, but just a l i t t le. This t rack is not as quick paced as others on the EP but is quicker than ‘Suspending’. ‘My Goddess’ has a dist inct

acoust ic sound. A s imple yet effective track, which survives despite not having either the ‘rock sounds’ or the ‘80’s feel’ of previous t racks. And l ike the previous t rack is a complete change of pace to the rest of the EP. The lyr ics are sharp and meaningful .

Track 8 – Bui l t for (REMIX)The pace is picked up once again and that 80’s feel is back. This Remix version has a more Pop feel to i t compared to the or iginal which has a dist inct rock feel. I prefer the remix to the or iginal version and think i t may appeal more to supporters of other genres.

Overal lWhi lst the band claims to draw inspirat ion f rom the Smashing Pumpkins and Placebo, there is a much more eclectic mix found here. Kings of Leon, REM and Snow Patrol are al l mixed together with an up-dated Kraftwerk sound, add to that vocals that at t imes have a dist inct Bowie feel to them and you create the unique and dist inct ive sound that is Rude Cute.

Make This Relate

How does i t feel to win on Redbul l Bedroom Jam?Surreal! I th ink that ’s the best word to descr ibe i t . We never thought for a second that we would get th is far in the compet it ion so we’re st i l l in shock. Once again, thank you to every s ingle person who helped us get to th is stage. We couldn’t have done i t without you and we are very grateful .

What was your react ion when you got the news?I just stared at the screen in d isbel ief. The webpage was tak ing so long to load due to a l l the people try ing to access i t at the same t ime and when i t d id f inal ly load, and our name was on the screen, I just was tota l ly surpr ised. I th ink i t took us a whi le to process the informat ion but we were del ighted. We cannot wait to start p lay ing a l l the fest iva ls .

What fest ival are you most looking forward to performing at?We’re real ly looking forward to p lay ing each of them however I th ink T in the Park is the one we’re looking forward to the most . T in the Park is such a b ig th ing for music fans in Scot land, so gett ing the chance to p lay at i t i s insane! I t wi l l a lmost be l ike a hometown show for us .

What song do you think wi l l get the biggest crowd react ion?I th ink i t wi l l depend on which fest iva l we’re at - we won’t be p lay ing the same set at every fest iva l . We’ l l be p lay ing our s l ight ly heavier songs at Download and Sonisphere and we’ l l leave the more pop or ientated songs for T in the Park and Underage. Aspen TideCover Story

Robi Lambie – 22 - Vocals , Guitar

Ross Stoddart – 21 - Guitar, Vocals

Ia in MacLeod – 22 - Bass, Vocals , Synth

Genre: Scott ish a lternat ive rock

How long you’ve been together: Just

over a year

The messiest member is : maybe Robi ,

fo l lowed c losely by Ross.

The prankster is : hard to say, we’re a l l

real ly up for a good bit of banter!

Most attract ive is : again hard to say,

we’ l l let the fans decide that one…

Robi: I f Ross had his way he’d try to solo l ike S lash on every song! Ia in: Emphasis on the ‘ try ’. . .Ross: Hey!

Who where your Chi ldhood music idol ’s?Ross: S lash!Ia in: Oh god…Robi: I had a lot of t ime for S imon Nei l .

What song is your ear l iest musical memory?Robi : Wel l my f i rst record was ‘Good Enough’ by Dodgy. Ross: Something by The Rol l ing Stones, my Dad loves them.

What age did you each decide music was going to be your career?Iain: I ’ve never made the conscious decis ion that music would ever be my ‘career ’ as such. I t ’s just something I real ly enjoy, and whatever happens I ’ l l a lways be involved in some way or another.Ross: Yeah, I don’t think i t ’s real ly ever

What are you up to at the moment? Ross: At the moment we are in a bit of a transit ional per iod. Robi : Yeah, we released our second s ingle ‘From The Strong Came Forth’ at the start of May, supported MakethisRelate in Glasgow a few days later and went on tour at the end of the month into the start of June. I t was great , but sadly our drummer Garry left at the end of that tour. So we are now in the process of recruit ing a new drummer! Ia in: There’s p lenty more in the works but can’t te l l you about i t just yet!

How did you get into the music industry? Ross: We were al l at univers ity studying Commercial Music , so I guess that real ly gave us a platform to get in there. I t ’s how we al l met anyway.

Who were your favourite bands growing up?Robi : A lot of pop punk stuff. Just the usuals ; Sum 41, Green Day, Bl ink 182.Ross: I was into c lass ic rock quite a bit , a lways got a soft spot for Guns N’ Roses!

Page 23: therockette_-_issue_7

something you ‘decide’ to do. We’ve al l grown up loving music so i t ’s a very natural for us. We’ve al l been involved in the music business outs ide of this band for quite some t ime too.

Can you descr ibe your ear ly experiences of g igging and working on your f i rst EP?Robi : I t was real ly excit ing and refreshing to explore a l l our ideas for the f i rst t ime with each other. Thankful ly our f i rst show was a good one even though we only wrote the songs quickly in t ime for i t . We started off p laying purely acoust ic shows for a whi le so we didn’t real ly jump straight in at the deep end. I t was great fun though, but i t fe lt good to unleash the ful l sound when we were ready.Ia in: As for our f i rst EP, that ’s in the pipel ine, hopeful ly re leased before the end of the year! We have released a couple of s ingles though, and we’re pretty happy with how they ’ve turned out.

How would you descr ibe your music?

Ia in: I t ’s a lways di f f icult to say, as you don’t want to pigeon-hole yourself too much. But I a lways l ike to think of i t as some kind of super-melodic , indie-pop-metal , with extra noises.

Who would you say are your greatest inf luences and who do you part icular ly admire r ight now in the industry? Ia in: We’ve got a lot of d i f ferent k ind of inf luences, as we’re a l l inf luenced by dif ferent things. I think that probably comes across quite c lear ly in our music . Some of our biggest inf luences as a band though are people l ike Manchester Orchestra, Brand New, The Xcerts , Fr ightened Rabbit , Reuben etc. Oh and The Chariot . Always The Chariot! Ross: We al l admire any art ist or band that puts 110% into whatever they do, especial ly when playing l ive.

Touring – love i t or hate i t?In the words of the mighty Don Broco. . . LOVE IT!

Page 24: therockette_-_issue_7

What are your worst and favourite parts of being on tour together? Robi : Best Part - having a dr ink after the show knowing that the only responsibi l i ty you have the next day is to get to the venue the next night and put on a rock show. Worst Part - being hungover and having to get to the next venue.

What was the best g ig you’ve ever played, and what was the worst? Robi : Al l of the shows we did on tour were cracking fun. We got to play with some fantast ic bands and many of our fr iends as wel l which is a lways a nice bonus! Ross: The ABC show recently in Glasgow was also a great show purely because of the amount of f r iendly folk we got to meet! Robi : The only t ime I don’t enjoy a show is general ly because either I ’ve played awful or my equipment has fa i led me. In St i r l ing the amp I was playing through gave up result ing in a shortened set .

Could you br ief ly descr ibe the music-making process? And how you come up with your lyr ics? Robi : General ly I come up with an idea for a song , which usual ly has a loose structure with chords, melody and lyr ics . The fun comes when we get together in the studio and al l add our own spin to i t . I t ’s a very sat isfy ing experience when you hear i t come together with harmonies and addit ional parts . The lyr ics I write are a l l completely subconscious. I don’t think I ’ve ever spent much t ime thinking about the lyr ics I ’m writ ing. I just empty them out of my head in quite a short per iod of t ime sometimes a couple of

Page 25: therockette_-_issue_7

minutes and then a few days later when I look over them it ’s then that I ’ l l make sense of them. They ’re a lways ful l of metaphors. I don’t have the guts to write too direct .

I f you could do a cover of any song , what song would you choose and why? Robi : ‘ The Night They Drove Old Dix ie Down’ by The Band for sure.Ross: We did an acoust ic show in Hamilton a whi le back and did quite a few covers which were so detached from our own sound. I t was great fun.Ia in: I th ink we could play a pretty mean heavier vers ion of the tune, just saying!

What song do you get requests for the most? Robi : We always get asked for Breathing Underwater and can’t real ly leave that out of the set at the moment as i t seems a popular choice!

What would be your ideal date?Ross: I a lways l ike a good food and movie combo, whether that ’s going out to a restaurant then onto the c inema or staying in with take out and a DVD, I ’m not real ly bothered!Ia in: Beer?Robi : Beer or Wray & Nephew.

What song reminds you of the f i rst t ime you fel l in love? ( I t ’s up to you i f you want this to be sweet or naughty)Ia in: Sweet or naughty…tough choice!Robi : ‘ Three Time A Lady ’. . i t was a fun night.Ross: So many songs remind me of a lot of things, i t ’s too hard to choose!

Do you have posters up on your room wal ls?Ross: Yeah, a l l sorts , used to have more but they kept fa l l ing down!

Page 26: therockette_-_issue_7

Robi: I st ick my guitars up instead.Ia in: I don’t actual ly, not sure why, should probably get some.

What is the weirdest g i f t you have received from a fan?Ross: We haven’t real ly been given g i fts and i t ’s not something we’d expect from our fans.Robi : I actual ly got g iven some Love Hearts . The sweets. .Ia in: A g ir l in Dundee did once put Robi ’s shoe down her top, i f you cal l that a g i f t .Robi : She actual ly stole i t off the stage but did ‘g i f t ’ i t back to me.

What ’s been the highl ight for you so far, and do you have any regrets?Ross: There’s been lots , gett ing our s ingle ‘L ions’ p layed on BBC Radio 1 has to be up there. As wel l as the O2 ABC2 gig in May.Robi : Yeah, and after a l l the problems we had leading up to our f i rst tour, especial ly car troubles, actual ly complet ing i t was a major achievement. Ia in: Every breakdown is a highl ight for me. Can’t beat a good breakdown!Robi : Not car breakdowns. .Ross: I wouldn’t say we have any regrets .

What can we expect in the future from you? Ross: Lots of things! Ia in: Hopeful ly a lot more of the same.Robi : More tours, more releases, more Aspen Tide!

What would be the best piece of advice you have been given that you would l ike to share with our readers?Ross: I don’t think I ’ve ever been given any great advice. Though my Dad used

to a lways say “Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do, and i f you do, take pictures!” Robi : ‘Everything in moderat ion’. You can do anything. . just a l i tt le bit . I a lso l ive by the proverb: ‘A ship in port is safe, but that is not what ships are made for.’

What art ist would you love to col laborate with?Iain: Tr icky one! I ’d probably have to say at the moment Just in Vernon. Could be interest ing! Robi : Pretty sure he’s got his hands ful l with Kanye West though. Ia in: E i ther him or Gary Bar low! Or Cheryl Cole, for obvious reasons.Ross: I ’d real ly l ike to col laborate with some Scott ish unsigned art ists , I ’ve not real ly seen that happen much. I suppose these things come down to money a lot of the t ime, but would be great to work with the l ikes of Trapped In Kansas, Farewel l S ingapore or Make Sparks.

The best g ig you have been to? Robi : Seeing Sucioperro and The Xcerts share a stage at Sneaky Pete’s in Edinburgh.Ia in: The f i rst t ime I saw Vessels at the Captain’s Rest was pretty specia l . Just because I ’d never heard them before, and in such a smal l venue i t was absolutely mind-blowing. Def initely up there.Robi : I once saw Bif fy play in a cow shed up north! C lass ic!Ross: Twin At lant ic at Barrowlands in Glasgow recently was great , they were on top form!

What do you do to relax when you’re not working?Iain: Dr ink far too much, and play music . L i teral ly not a

Page 27: therockette_-_issue_7

lot e lse!Ross: S ince I ’ve f in ished univers ity in May I ’m pretty sure I ’m now addicted to PS3 games and alcohol , not at the same t ime though, that ’d be s i l ly! Robi : I love songwrit ing.

I f you hadn’t become a band/singer etc . , what job do you think you’d be doing r ight now?Robi: Wel l , unfortunately, we do actual ly have jobs. As much as we’d a l l love to not have to work!

Who are your celeb crushes?Iain: Oh god. There’s probably quite a few.. . That south american g ir l f rom Modern Family. She’s absolutely epic , can’t remember her name though! Ross: Mi la Kunis Robi : Reese WeatherspoonIain: Is la F isherRobi : Davina McCal lIa in: Cr ist ina ScabbiaRobi : E l izabeth Banks, for sure!Ross: Can’t leave out Megan Fox lads! Ia in: Yeah. This could go on for a whi le. . .

I f a genie gave you 3 wishes, what would you wish for?1. Free booze for a l i fet ime2. See number one3. See number two

Any last words? We would just l ike to say a quick thank you to everyone who has ever taken the t ime to l isten to our music or come to a show, buy merchandise or come and say hi . We’ve got a lot p lanned for the future, so keep your eyes peeled!

Page 28: therockette_-_issue_7

QUICKFIRE ROUNDSuperman or Batman: Batman, absolutely!

Coke or Pepsi : Robi is addicted to Pepsi Max, so there’s only one answer here!

Ps3 or Xbox: T ie. Ross has PS3, Ia in has Xbox, Robi has neither.

S impsons or Family guy: Think this one’s a t ie too.

John Garden “The ShadeS of Life” eP reviewMeet John Garden a new Alternat ive solo art ist f rom London. After spending a lot of t ime travel l ing , experiencing many shades of this l i fe he has written his f i rst EP. John’s EP is very l ight , i t ’s an acoust ic a lbum and not l ike anything out at the moment, so i t would be di f f icult to compare him to someone else.

Track 1 - hearT’S reGreTSHeart ’s Regrets was a lyr ical ly deep song. I t ’s about having regrets in your l i fe . John’s voice, which although nice, was at t imes, just a soft whisper. At t imes the l ight vocals d id make i t d i f f icult to c lear ly make out the lyr ics . But this a lso gave a relaxed and smooth feel to the track. The track was very s low musical ly, with l ight guitar ing and soft drumming.

“ I ’m ready now to release something that hopeful ly wi l l be able to inspire those people that l ike me are st i l l chasing their dreams“ -

John Garden

Track 2 - LeTTer To an oLd friendThis track was very s imi lar to the f i rst! John s ings about old memories with fr iends. I t does, however, speed up a l i tt le towards the end. I enjoyed this track most on the EP. I th ink a lot of people might connect with the lyr ics . The lyr ics in this track were c learer, with a moderately quicker tempo than the previous track.

overaLLSmooth and sophist icated, a romantic and smoochie type EP. Put this on and snuggle up c lose, or play in the background to a candlel i t meal!! ! Awwww, mwah.

Members:Bismuth Bul lets , 17 , Lead singer/Main lyricistL Mourningstar , 18 , Drummer/Scream vocals/Second lyricistJ Finlay , 16 , Lead Guitarist

Dougie Rushton , 19 , Bassist

Bio:Mourningstar are a new band from Brighton , (UK) , consist ing of 4 members . Previously , there were 5 members , but the l ineup fe l l short in ear ly May when Jacob had to leave for his exams. As a band, Mourningstar tend to write their own music , a l though they have covered Much Like Fal l ing by Flyleaf . Bis , the lead vocal ist , has been working Japanese lyrics into the song the band is current ly working on , in order to widen the fan base opportunit ies .The whole band has been involved in Fundraising For Japan, doing various things to raise money, including “Jammies for Japan” , in which they spent a day in town with some fr iends , a l l in their PJ’s , fundrais ing . With thanks to their website , Mourningstar current ly have some loyal fans , who are eagerly await ing their EP release .

How did you come up with the name for your band? Was i t your First choice?Bismuth and L came up with the name very early on , as soon as I heard Mourningstar , i t was

l ike , this is a kick ass name. I thought that this had to be the name, i t is very original and i t sounds awesome.

Did you have any other band names in mind? We’d joked around with a few names , but nothing serious real ly . Mourningstar just sort of…

suited us .

How long have you known each other? I ’ve known Bis for about 2 years , J s ince January-ish in 2011 , and I ’ve known Dougie s ince

around March , when we started our rehearsals properly . I can’ t remember exact ly…

J: I knew one of Bismuth ’s c losest fr iends before the band, she also was in a band with Bismuth before this one . I real ly wanted to join their band, eventual ly they broke up and Bismuth was looking for another . I repl ied to one of her ads , I was very desperate to f ind someone, and they repl ied back and we also became the best of fr iends .

How did your band start? Wel l , i t was December 2010, and I was bored out of my mind after di tching my last band

( there was a huge conf l ict between me and an ex… I gave the band the ul t imatum of me or him… No one would choose , so I lef t and they fe l l apart…) . My l i fe was so boring , and L l ived in London… I was ta lking to this guy Tim, and we decided to start a band. Init ia l ly i t would ’ve been a band with heavy ass metal , Welsh lyrics , the lot . But then he had to leave due to… medical problems… He’d left when the l ine up was only me, him, and J . No bass , and then when he left , no drums. I was stuck , the only drummer I knew aside from previous bands… Was L . I ’d learnt

New band on the scene! Meet. . . .

Page 31: therockette_-_issue_7

New band on the scene! Meet. . . . my lesson with relat ionships and bands… But I gave i t a go , and he f i t perfect ly . I then found a bassist , Dougie , and got my fr iend Jacob Raven in on rhyhm guitar . We were the perfect band, but Jacob had to leave for educational reasons , his exams were more important in our eyes , and probably in his too . Now, we’re a 4-piece of nutters ! But L is def inite ly the craziest .

What has been your biggest chal lenge as a band? Trying to keep pace with everyone else! I don’t have a decent drum kit , so I can only pract ise

in rehearsals , so I don’t get as much t ime to pract ise my piece as much as the others . I ’d say keeping both my relat ionship AND the band together , in sync . Keeping a band

together isn ’ t a lways easy , there ’s a lways going to be some kind of conf l ict , even i f i t ’s only what studio to work with , or what r i f f works best . I t ’s the same with most re lat ionships . I guess I ’ve got i t pretty good , L ’s amazing , and the band is awesome. The two sort of work with each other , but keeping the balance is crucia l .

Erm…being in the band? [ laughs] I don’ t think we’ve faced any chal lenges yet in my opinion , I think just song writ ing . This is the f irst band I have ever been with , so I guess I ’m learning something along the way, everything I do in the band doesn’t seem l ike a chal lenge . I think of i t as a learning progress , everyday I learn something , and I ’m wi l l ing to st ick with i t .

Finding space and t ime to pract ise!

As a new band how much of a chal lenge has i t been in the industry?Wel l , we haven’t had many chal lenges real ly . I guess we’re too new to be having huge issues .

Our biggest chal lenge so far was f inding the r ight rehearsal space . That and gett ing known enough to have people want our EP when i t ’s re leased!

I don’t think this real ly appl ies yet…

When you write your lyrics , what inspires you? I ’m not sure… I guess everything inspires me. I mean, what isn ’ t inspirat ional? I ’m inf luenced

by emotion , and there ’s emotion in everything that happens each day. There ’s a lways some emotion in what you do .

My l i fe .

What ’s your favourite song to perform? We haven’t started performing yet . I t would be a lot more interest ing i f I say what would be

my favourite , i t would have to be “Walk” by Pantera , everything in that song is amazing , s imple r i f f , k i l ler solo , what more could you want .

Flyleaf – Much Like Fal l ing .

What where your musical inf luences growing up? Oh God… Erm… I don’t real ly know. I used to want to be the next Avri l Lavigne , but she ’s

gone so mainstream now, and I don’t want that to happen to us! I think my biggest inf luence was The Rev. His drumming made my heart beat l ike i t ’s never done before . When he starts p laying , I just want to s ing to the beat . My other big inf luence would be Bul let For My Valentine . They’re proof that good things come from the strangest of p laces . As a fe l low Welshman, I ’m proud to have their music associated with my home country!

Hmm… Avenged Sevenfold were a big one for me. Escape the Fate were an inf luence too , with Ronnie of course… And then there ’s Bul let .

Judas Priest are the band that got me into rock/metal , there ’s so many other bands/art ists ! My two favourite guitarists would be Randy Rhoads from the f irst solo Ozzy albums , and Steve Vai . Randy played with such passion , and his style was so special , I love learning his songs! Steve Vai must be god , there ’s no one l ike him. When I f irst heard “For the Love of God” and “Tender Surrender” , I was l ike… How the hel l can anyone do that ! Also his David Lee Roth stuff is great , those two are my heroes .

Mine are extensive , anything from A7X to Kings of Leon Who is your favourite band at the moment?

At the moment? Erm… Alesana. Dougie : Red Hot Chi l l i Peppers Mourningstar got me into stuff l ike Escape the Fate , Black Vei l Brides , Eyes Set to Ki l l etc .

More of the modern stuff , I ’m a bit of a hippy I would say… But recent ly I have been so attached to Chi ldren of Bodom, Alexi Laiho is the next Guitar Hero! He deserves that t i t le . Also , Black Vei l Brides . Andy Biersack has such a voice , and his message of the band means a lot to me. I love trying to scream and sing some of his stuff (even though I suck) .

Hmmm… I ’m not real ly sure . 8-bal l says ask again tomorrow! How long have you been playing (any) instruments?

I started playing bass at age 11 , I quit cause I knew the guitar was for me, I wasn’t committed in the f irst 4 years of p laying , but when I was about 15-16 , i t was a 24/7 kinda thing haha.

I p layed vio l in for about 7 years then switched to bass for the last 2-3 years

Page 32: therockette_-_issue_7

I p layed Piano for the f irst t ime at age 3 , and I started taking dif ferent lessons from the age of 4 onwards . I started drumming at the age of 7 .

Erm…Hmmm… Well , I p layed Clarinet and Viol in unti l around 10/12 years o ld… And I started guitar about age 8 . I just couldn’ t get into i t . I ’ve been singing since I was about 5 , and i t ’s just who I am real ly . Though when I reached 15 , I bought my f irst bass . I now have an Ibanez , and i t ’s my favourite instrument . Except Paul , my acoust ic guitar . I ’ve had him about 14 years!

If you could add any other band member from anywhere in the world , who would i t be and why? That ’s a tough one . I have al l my heroes , but to be honest I would rather not do that , unless i f

there was an emergency and no one turned up… Then I would f ind anyone I could f ind , famous or not . I just wanna put on a great show.

The Rev… Because of his fucked up vocals . That , and he was my biggest inf luence . The Flea coz he could teach me how to play bass properly!

I wouldn’ t have any. Much as I ’d love to do a duet with someone l ike Matt Tuck or M Shadows, I love the band I have now. That means I wouldn’ t change the members unless I had to… And having to change memebrs means that I ’d have to hate their guts . I tend not to hate people , so i t ’d be a long t ime before I ’d want enough to replace any of these mad guys! What lyric , e i ther your own or someone else ’s has a specif ic meaning to you?

Look at you , you miserable fool , get up off your knees… Basical ly , The Thespian by Alesana. There ’s a lyric in our new song, but I won’t say what the lyric is , that ’s a surprise! Basical ly

though, I wrote part of i t about someone I used to be very c lose to , and now there ’s this huge hatred surrounding us both . I t ’s kind of sad real ly , we used to a lways be best fr iends , then one day… He stopped caring .

I never bothered to memorise lyrics , no idea why, I have writ ten some before , but they suck [ laughs] . But yeah, I ‘m no lyric person.

Can’t think of one .

What type of music do you real ly not l ike? I think every type of music has i ts good and bad art ists , but I ’m not keen on R&B.

I would say Rap, but there are a few rappers I do actual ly l ike… So I ’m gonna say Hip-Hop. Hmm… Probably Hip-Hop or Dubstep… Definite ly Dubstep . I don’t see how something with

the same frekaing bassl ine , for every song by every art ist , can be considered good! [ laugh] Music needs variety .

Modern day chart music , I l ike al l the older stuff in the charts , but a l l the JLS and Bieber stuff is just noise to me. I ts my opinion , no fact , they have done a great job of making i t , but Michael Jackson, he is the true art ist of Pop. Everyone else doesn’t have the same feel I think , I can only respect them.

X-factor , love or loathe and why? Loathe , because i t a l lows shit people into the music industry! Bit of both , there is good and bad but I wont go into al l that though.

Don’t care about i t , there ’s rarely anyone good on i t but I just don’t watch i t . Hmmm… Loathe i t because of how shameful most of those acts are . There ’s so many pathet ic

wannabe’s who are so far up their own ass they can see freaking Madonna on God’s pedestool , thinking they’re the best thing since Satyricon… When in actual fact , they might as wel l be a cat going through a lawnmower backwards . Both look and sound disgust ing . What do you do to re lax?J : Im a Guitarist , I ’m on my Guitar a lot more than my col lege work . I a lso love video games , Cal l of Duty , Guitar Hero , God of War , those kinda games… But my main source of re laxing is turning out the l ights , add some overdrive , and I just p lay shit , heavy or soft , I don’t care , I wi l l p lay whatever makes me feel r ight .

Play bass! [ laughs] do you REALLY want me to answer that? C’mon, I ’m fu l l of innuendos! [ laughs] I ’m

kidding! I just tend to watch L bounce off the wal ls because he’s had too much caffeine…Either play a game, read , or drink a shit load of Relent less !

If you where a TV/cartoon character who would you be and why?I ’d probably be… Near from Death Note , because of my tendancies to behave exact ly l ike L

Lawliet . Hmmm… I ’d be Moka Akashiya from Rosario+Vampire . That way, when someone pisses me

off , I can kick them unconcious and te l l them to learn their p lace! Hmmm… I ’m not sure actual ly . I ’m happy the way I am.

Roadrunner . Because he never loses! If you were a superhero ,

which ONE special power would you have? Telekenisis . The abi l i ty to move objects at wi l l , that way I can hit people with random objects

i f they annoy me. X-Ray Vision! Then I can look next door and see what the hel l they’ve done to their house…

They just don’t stop dri l l ing! Either that , or the abi l i ty to soundproof any room by c l icking my f ingers . Either way, next door ’s crappy music and annoying dri l l ing won’t affect me! [ laughs]

I ’ve got three words for you . Al l of them. Simple as [ laughs] The power of f l ight .

What have been your experiences of “celebri ty l i fe” . What are the perks/negative s ides of fame?

Negatives would be that everyone tr ies to use you as their c laim to fame… But the posit ives are that i t has made me gain a new found respect for normal i ty .

Eugh. I hate the idea of paparazzi . The great thing about the type of music we’re in means that there ’s no sta lkers sel l ing photos to papers . The worst paps that metal gets is a reporter at your house at 3AM using you as a scapegoat . That , my dear , would be the negativi ty of fame. The perks , however , mean L and I may f inal ly be able to buy a decent s ized fr idge! [ laughs]

I don’t real ly care to be honest , basical ly i f you enjoy doing something , i ts hard to f ind any negatives . Every moment is a perk , that ’s how I feel , every moment is specia l .

As soon as people hear about us , I ’ l l answer that [ laughs]

Do you have any excit ing shows coming up : Not yeat , but I real ly hope we can get some gigs going soon. I know a lot of local bands , some

more famous than others , and I think i f I pul l a few str ings I can get some to do a show with us . Wel l , I hope so! [ laughs] I think i t ’s real ly important that r ight now we focus al l our attention to our EP, and forget about the gigs unti l i t ’s f inished . There’s no point going on stage and playing songs people don’t know, by a band they’ve never heard of . People would be l ike “who are they?!” [ laughs] . I reckon that once our EP is f inished , we could get a gig going and hand out our EP at the gig , that way people wi l l have something to remember us by!

Who would you l ike to tour with? Oooh… That ’s a hard one! I ’d love to tour with The GazettE or Versai l le… or Bel la Morte .

I ’d LOVE to tour with Bul let or GazettE . Wales and Japan are my two favourite p laces . The place I belong , and the place I ’d do anything for . Literal ly . I ’ve spent count less pounds on helping Japan with L , and raised money in fundraisers too!

I real ly don’t mind to be honest , there are so many to choose , i ts hard to pick . I would say Black Vei l Brides to be one of them, they have such a huge fan base , and are ki l ler l ive ( in a good way of course! )

Muse .

Final ly , where do you HOPE to be in a year ’s t ime? And where do you think you wi l l ACTUALLY be?

Having recorded either our EP or f irst actual a lbum, and gigging . Maybe not touring , but gigging . I think we wi l l actual ly be just f inishing our f irst proper album.

I ’d hope to be touring America . We’re much more popular over there than we are in England. But real ist ic ly , I think we’ l l be f inishing our f irst proper album and just start ing a UK tour , and that ’s at a push . Who knows. Maybe I ’m wrong, and maybe we wi l l be touring America after a l l ! Al l we can do is hope… And rehearse l ike mad! [ laughs]

Alive… Sti l l p laying guitar . I t wi l l be a surprise to see what happens , anything could happen.I hope the band takes off and get ’s famous , I think we’re l ikely to st i l l be doing smal l

gigs in a year .

Bon- Jovi Live at Murr y field S tadium 22nd

June 2011(stor y)

Wow.. . I t ’s Bon Jovi day!!! Mags and I had been text ing a l l day. We had both been extremely exc i ted s ince booking the t ickets way back in November last year. After a l l the terr ib le weather we had been gett ing in Scot land, t ry ing to f ind something that was drop dead gorgeous but a lso pract ica l to wear was the hard part! After f inding something suitable, Mags arr ived jumping up and down with exc i tement. S ince no one at her house was as exc i ted as

she was, she had decided, “ I ’m going to Daniel le ’s”. She had arr ived at my house, 2 hours ear ly, and I was in the process of gett ing ready. I t took me 20 minutes to do my hair, make-up and get dressed. Fastest ever, I was sooooo exc i ted!

We were ready to go, but couldn’t . My dad had taken my brother to the dent ist in the car and we had to wait on them gett ing back. I t seemed to be tak ing

Page 35: therockette_-_issue_7

forever. . . When dad f inal ly pul led into the dr iveway, i t was t ime to go!!! . . . .

In the car and a l l strapped in and with Bon Jovi b lar ing from the CD player, we headed for Murrayf ie ld. However i t seemed everyone was heading there and the traff ic was a n ightmare. We had been lucky enough to get a d isabled park ing pass so we knew we would be able to park c lose to the venue. This was where we ran into the f i rst of many problems we were to encounter on the day.

We approached the f i rst secur i ty point and showed our park ing pass . We were waved through. However, when we tr ied to get through the regular car park to the d isabled park ing area, we were waved into the standard park ing areas. We tr ied to expla in that we had a d isabled pass , but they would not let us through, so we had to park there. The ground was very uneven, r iddled with pot holes and had lots of loose stones and gravel . This i s one of the worst k inds of surfaces to use a wheelchair on!!!

Having navigated my way caut ious ly across the car park, I reached the relat ive safety of a smooth( ish) footpath, th is led onto yet another uneven gravel led area, where the ‘merch’ stand was

s i tuated. £35 for a t-shirt for me and Mags being a t ight arse, bought a bag for £10. Across yet more loose gravel to get to the gate where the secur i ty person checked our t ickets and to ld us to head across to the l i f t . This was k inda confus ing as we had paid £65 per t icket for tracks ide spaces. We should have been s i tuated in Tracks ide ‘A’ which was just to the s ide of the VIP p i t - Gold C irc le .

Now through the gate, we made our way past the d isabled car park, where there were several empty spaces and we were ushered towards the l i f t by yet more secur i ty personnel . Once ins ide were to ld to go to level 3 . On ex i t ing there was no one there to help or g ive d irect ions, so we just wondered around a imless ly unt i l we found someone. By nothing more than pure dumb luck, the f i rst person we came across was just outs ide the area we were being put . She to ld us to go through the door and up the ramp where more secur i ty would show us to our space. We were shown into our space, but th is wasn’t r ight , we were h igh up in the stands and the v iew was terr ib le . We thought we must have been put in the wrong area, so we went back to ta lk to secur i ty.

We spoke with the lady at the bottom of the ramp, who, on further examinat ion of our t ickets , thought that we should have been at tracks ide. She escorted us back down in the l i f t and took us to the secur i ty off ice. I t had taken about 15 minutes just to get to the off ice and the f i rst band was now on the stage. The f i rst person we spoke with in the off ice agreed that we should have been at tracks ide, but bel ieved the d isabled seats had a l l been moved. She would contact the manager to come and speak with us and c lar i fy the s i tuat ion. 35

Page 36: therockette_-_issue_7

10-15 minutes later the manager arr ived and conf i rmed that a l l the d isabled seats had been moved for “health and safety ” reasons. We tr ied to argue our case, but they just sent us back to the l i f t .

By the t ime we eventual ly got back to our seats we had missed a l l of the f i rst support act . “ Val Verde” a f ive p iece Indie rock band from Dunferml ine in Scot land had won a compet it ion on the local radio stat ion, Forth One to support Bon Jovi . I t was extremely d isappoint ing not to have seen them l ive, as both Mags and I had only previous ly heard them onl ine. We both th ink they are very good though.

Next up was another band who’s name i t was d i ff icu lt to hear for a l l the g i r ls screaming! I bel ieve they are ca l led Vintage Trouble!!! They are a four p iece rhythm n blues/rock band from

Los Angeles . Of course I couldn’t te l l they were four p ieced, due to the awful v iewing pos it ion we now had high up on the balcony and looking stra ight at the s ide of the stage. Occas ional ly, we would get a rare g l impse of a band member as they momentar i ly appeared from beneath the tarpaul in which covered the roof and s ides of the stage. Nor could we see the g iant screens which were pos it ioned on e i ther s ide of the stage. And with a th ick metal hand ra i l , convenient ly pos i t ioned exact ly at eye level in f ront of us , t ry ing to see anything from up here was a complete and utter joke.

I t was at th is t ime we decided to v is i t the l i tt le ladies room to powder our col lect ive noses, cos we didn’t want to be needing to do that in the middle of Bon Jovi . I don’t know i f th is i s good or bad, but we fe l t th is band sounded

(T his was our View)

Page 37: therockette_-_issue_7

better f rom ins ide the loo? Haha!

Short ly after returning to our spaces, the chap s i tt ing to my r ight asked where I had got my t-shirt . I to ld h im I had got i t f rom the ‘merch’ sta l l outs ide. He was going to go down to the ‘merch’ sta l l ins ide the stadium, but I to ld h im we weren’t a l lowed! This was despite other people f rom around about us in the seat ing areas walk ing down the sta irs and through the gap. We had tr ied to b lag our way onto the p itch when we were down at the secur i ty off ice, say ing that we wanted to go to the ‘merch’ sta l l , with the p lan that once we had gotten in there we weren’t coming out . Again, however, they would not let us past . “Sorry love, health and safety, we can’t let you on the p itch” we were to ld. “ Your wheelchair could be a hazard to others”! So the chap sa id he would wait unt i l he was leaving and go to the sta l l outs ide.

Despite moving a l l the wheelchairs f rom tracks ide up onto the balcony, they had kept the seat numbers the same. I had my wheelchair in my des ignated space no.11 and the chap to my r ight was in no.12. I t was gett ing bus ier now and the p lace was a lmost fu l l in ant ic ipat ion of Bon Jovi coming on. I t was at th is t ime that secur i ty decided to squeeze more wheelchairs in . The secur i ty staff squeezed a young g ir l in between mysel f and the chap on my r ight . This young g ir ls d isabi l i ty meant that her arms f la i led about and I was h i t on numerous occas ions. I , in no way, want to cr i t ic ize anyone for their d isabi l i ty, but she shouldn’t have been squeezed in there. She should have had her own space corresponding to her t icket number, so i t was not her fault she got squeezed in there. I would suggest that th is was down to the fact

the wheelchair area on the balcony was l ike ly a lot smal ler than the area at t racks ide.

The one and only benef i t of where we were now s i tt ing was that we saw Jon Bon Jovi arr ive in h is chauffeur dr iven car. Most of the stand began screaming , me and Mags inc luded!! People f rom elsewhere in the stadium, who couldn’t see, were wonder ing what was going on.

Al l of a sudden a huge roar went up and Bon Jovi were on stage, not that I could see anything! They opened

with one of their newer songs ca l led, “blood on blood” taken from the “new jersey ” a lbum. This was fo l lowed by one of their c lass ics , “Shot through the Heart ”. The atmosphere was e lectr ic

Page 38: therockette_-_issue_7

and the crowd was real ly pumped, and the music was real ly c lear and loud. (P lease note: I could see the crowd c learer than I could see the band) . Later, Jon Bon Jovi , asked, “are there any nurses in the bui ld ing? ” To which Mags started screaming , “me, me, me, I ’m a nurse!” This was a l l part of the bui ld up to p lay ing “Bad Medic ine”. A few tracks later, they made both me and Mags very happy when they p layed, “ I ’ l l be there for you”. A l though, we were d isappointed that they d idn’t p lay e i ther, “Blaze of Glory ” or “Bed of Roses”. They left the stage after p lay ing “Keep the fa i th”, but they came back and played a 5 set encore, which inc luded, “Dead or Al ive” and “L iv ing on a Prayer ”. Then sadly, after a mere 25 tracks , i t was a l l over.

Whi lst wait ing on the crush of the crowds to d ie down a b i t , we were chatt ing with a couple of g i r ls who had been in the seated area in f ront of us . I t turns out their t ickets were only £20 and they were c loser than us with a much better v iew.

Once the crowds had died down a b i t , we made our way to the l i f t , where we jo ined a queue of more than 40 other wheelchairs , a l l wait ing to go down, one at a t ime. So much for ‘health and safety ’, what would have happened i f

there had been a f i re? The l i f t would have been one of the f i rst th ings switched off and we would a l l have been stuck up there as k indl ing!!! ! ! ! Many other wheelchair users in the queue, were a lso complain ing about being moved without any warning or pr ior not ice and the bad v iew and treatment they had received. To top my night off, a member of the secur i ty staff asked i f I had enjoyed mysel f, to which I answered, “Bon Jovi were good, but no, i t was shit !”

How did you choose the name of your band Have you changed the band’s name before?Tim: Bart, Wayne’s farther thought of i t . We’ve been cal led Axis, L i thium, and Flexible. Wayne: My Dad came up with i t in jest, and we al l said, hey that ’s cool.Mikey: It just came about out of nothing but is a new word we have invented which wi l l someday be in the dict ionary with two meanings. 1- A persons own internal universe i .e. everything their brain thinks and feels. 2 – A kick ass band from Tunbridge Wel ls, UK. Maybe…but the last one was so crap we couldn’ t possible tel l you.

What genre of music do you consider your work to be? Who are your major influences?Tim: Rock, Ambient. Muse, Metal l ica, U2, Simply Red, Jeff buckley, but to name a few along with l i fe.Wayne: Rock/GrooveMikey: Rock with a twist of something a bit di fferent. We’re not real ly inf luenced by anyone col lect ively. There are many bands and art ists we al l l ike from across many genres but I wouldn’ t say they direct ly inf luence us as a band.

When did you form your band? Tim: 10 years ago.Wayne: Too long ago to mention! :0)Mikey: The band Intraverse has been going for ages but as i t is now with al l 5 members I ’d say about a year and a bit .

What inspired you to make music together?Tim: Hanging out together and enjoying i t .Wayne: It just seems to work!Mikey: The enjoyment of being creat ive and shar ing i t with each other.

Where have you performed? What are your favourite and least favourite venues? We’ve got our s ingle launch show at The Forum in our hometown of Tunbridge Wel ls, and a couple of other local shows too.

How has your music evolved since you first began playing music together?Tim: We’ve become better as music ians in our own r ight and Mike f inal ly got bass lessons Wayne: Hel l yes, If we didn’ t evolve and improve there would be no reason to cont inue playing.

Mikey: L ike a f ine wine, It ’s got better with age!

Are you seeking fame and fortune?Tim: HELL YEAH!!Wayne: It ’s not a good reason to play music, i t should come from the soul not from how much cash you can make, but I wouldn’ t turn i t down.Mikey: Seeking fame, no. Becoming famous and earning money from our passion..YES!

What’s your most e m b a r r a s s i n g experience?Tim: I had the runs on stage and just had to go with i t and carry on playing, i t was so lucky none of the guys s l ipped on the mess. Wayne: Fal l ing over on stage at Hast ings Beer Fest ivalMikey:I don’ t real ly get embarrassed but the old band name was pretty horr i f ic lo l

What’s your dream holiday?Tim: A yacht in the Seychel les with the guys, fr iends, ladies, treats for the grow ups, pr ivate chef, a submarine tethered along s ide ful l of booze (to keep i t cool) relaxing gett ing the sun and swimming in the day t ime then gett ing r ight amongst i t at night. Wayne: Anywhere warm with good food, and beers!Mikey: Sun, sand, sea, dr inks and beaut i ful women. Went to Cuba a few years back and al l of those bases were covered

What is your music background: Tim: Al l studied music to A level and beyond. Andy is now a music teacher, but al l of us have kept up with everything we’ve learnt along the way. Wayne: Started out playing Piano and Viol in, moved to played Spanish Guitar and then Electr ic Guitar in my ear ly teens, s ince then the Viol in and Piano haven’ t real ly had a look in, a l though keyboard ski l ls come in

useful for composing.Mikey: Started at the age of 6 with recorder but that was short l ived and I changed to viol in aged 7. Joined the South Downs Youth Orchestra aged 11 and performed with them at the Royal Albert Hal l and the Br ighton Centre. Passed my Grade 5 then moved to viola unt i l I was 13 when changed completely and took up the bass guitar. Taught myself and was playing in two bands at school within a year and started writ ing my own bass l ines. Age 19 enrol led in the f i rst year of the newly opened Br ighton Inst i tute Of Modern Music to develop my playing more. And here I am now.

What are your songs about?Tim: Max? one for you old boy.. . . Wayne: Love, L i fe, Women, Journeys, Thoughts, Emotion.

Mikey: L i fe/personal experiences and views on the mad world we l ive in.

If you could play on your dream tour, what bands would be on it supporting you?Tim: P ink Floyd, Derek Trucks, Muse, Tower Of Power, Michael Jackson, Kings Of Leon, Steely Dan, Pat Metheny, Pendulum, Peter Gabrie l , Rihanna, Radio Head and Seal.Wayne: I f we got to the stage of choosing bands to support us I ’d l ike to think we’d give bands we know and who we’ve grown up playing with s lots with us. In Tyler We Trust, Origami Dinosaur are two for sure!Mikey: Hmmm… Queen, Aerosmith, Pink Floyd, Muse, System Of A Down..I could keep on going to be honest!

What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs? Some of them are a b i t underground pol i t ica l , “Great Exploitat ions” is about the way in which we as a soc iety have become so used to being exploited that we no longer quest ion i t . Some of them are more s imple, “Suffer ” i s a s imple story of longing for something or someone that i s hopeless but hopeful at the same t ime, but overal l most of the songs carry some sort of message. We don’t real ly l ike wr it ing too l i tera l ly so i ts part ly up to the l i stener to take what they can from each lyr ic . The a lbum we are recording just now has a strong theme running through i t but i ts not a concept a lbum! We might do that one day i f we’re lucky though!

Page 44: therockette_-_issue_7

Do your songs a lways express p e r s o n a l experiences or is i t people who you know also?I ts a mix of p e r s o n a l exper iences and observat ions of other people and s i tuat ions but these i n s p i r a t i o n s d o n ’ t n e c e s s a r i l y only come out in lyr ica l form. I t could be a bass l ine, guitar l ine or drum part just as eas i ly, for example, Mart in could come up to the studio at some point and throw down a bass l ine that he came up with on impulse because he was doing something or saw something that made him feel a certa in way or even reminded him of something , and he has done that p lenty of t imes. We pretty much a l l do that so each part of our songs has a personal meaning as wel l as an overal l meaning. Maybe thats why so much pass ion comes out when we play them l ive.

What can you tel l me about your instruments and do you only play one and what made you choose the instruments you have now?Scott - I p lay a l i tt le b i t of guitar as wel l as lead vocals but I ’ve never p layed guitar with the band, maybe thats something I could develop.

B i l ly - Guitar only, i ts a guitar ist th ing! I love my Gibson!

Mart in – The bass chose me as no-one chooses the bass , therefore I choose to destroy i t !

Roy- I s ing a l i tt le b i t but i t was a lways going to be drums for me! You have Ian Paice and Keith Moon to b lame!!

How has your music changed s ince you f i rst started playing music together?I ts got a l i tt le heavier. With Scott having such a pure sounding voice we were maybe a l i tt le concerned that there would be a power struggle in terms of volume between him and the music but he’s proved us wrong!! We spent quite a whi le developing and real ly just “ f inding ourselves” as c l iched as that might sound, i ts a necessary step that every band must take. We feel that we’ve been lucky that we’ve found something quite unique. That may just be because we have such wide ranging personal tastes and the col lect ive sound draws on a l l of them to make Stuntman Mike How do you promote your band and shows?Mostly onl ine promotion v ia Facebook and word of mouth. We have a group on Facebook ca l led “Stuntanians” that inc ludes most of our fans who we can contact to update about shows. We try to target people who are re levant and who we think would actual ly l ike to hear our music .

Descr ibe your show, v isual and musical ly?Orig inal ly we wanted a Tommy Lee sty le spinning drum r iser, lots of f i reworks and a fu l l backing choir but when we real ised we only had around £27 in the stage props budget we sett led for those free Burger K ing cardboard crowns and home-made capes haha! Visual ly- energet ic and animated perhaps? Musica l ly- dramatic , tuneful , foot stomping maybe? Come and see!!

Does the crowds input help?100% Any band would and should te l l you that they are nothing without the support of a crowd! You hear bands say ing at g igs that i ts a l l down to you guys, again i t sounds l ike a c l iche but i ts 100% true. We feel that any band who think they are b igger than their fans are sorely mistaken! L ike most bands, we write and record songs for the love of i t . Lucki ly people seem to l ike what we do natural ly so once again lady luck has helped us! What has been your biggest obstacle so far? And how did you get past i t?So far i ts been how to go about gett ing decent g igs

Page 45: therockette_-_issue_7

and bas ica l ly being l i stened to by people who can help us . We didn’t real ly have a formula for th is because there isn’t one, anyone who is in a band or has been in a band and has tr ied to “get up the ladder ” wi l l te l l you just how hard i t i s . The only th ing you can re ly on is your own perseverance, for some people i t just gets too much and in some cases where they g ive up, we as a soc iety miss out on art ists who could actual ly have been great and th is industry can wear down the hardest performers! You have to harden yoursel f against obstac les and try to see th ings f rom a d i fferent perspect ive a l l the t ime.

Tel l us about your next shows and why we should be there? You should be there because our shows make you 50% more awesome!! You get nothing but a funky death march when you come to see us haha!Imagine Darth Vader gett ing h is groove on and you’re somewhere c lose!! Actual ly, we’re so busy try ing to get the a lbum f in ished that there isn’t anything p lanned as yet! We’ l l be gett ing some dates organised over the next short whi le so we’ l l have an update for you very soon! You can keep up to date with our latest g igs at www.stuntmanmike.co.uk and fo l l o w us on

twitter @StuntmanMusic . We are a lso on Facebook.

Descr ibe your bedroom (colour/bed cover/posters ect)?Scott - K ind of bor ing , just the usual stuff, g l i tterbal l , rotat ing bed, smoke machine, mirrors etc .

B i l ly - Haven’t seen i t in a whi le , hmmm, th ink i ts got wal ls and a cei l ing or something l ike that . .need to th ink about th is one!

Mart in – I s leep in a coff in shaped bed, surrounded by gothic candlel ight and can only be roused by the b lood of a v i rg in, which is why I f lat share with Bi l ly.

Roy - A huge Rod Stewart poster on the cei l ing above my bed, faux t iger sk in carpet , Ferrar i posters and a huge bott le of Old Spice!! No actual ly i ts real ly p la in, no posters and nothing on the wal ls! Think the bed cover used to be white. Do you have any pets? I f yes what, i f no why not?Scott - I had a goldf ish but he’s in f i sh-heaven now. Do s lugs count?

Bi l ly - Do f leas count? Mart in – Does my g ir l f r iend count?

Roy - As much as I love animals , I sadly have a l lerg ies , I ’ve got a fake l ion head on the wal l , does that count? Any hidden talents?Scott - I ’m the best k isser I know!

Bi l ly - I won a compet it ion for having the best “Hair F l ick” I a lso make great beans on toast g i r ls , GRRRR!

Mart in – I ’m a great actor, because I real ly hate my bandmates and they haven’t caught on yet……

Roy - DIY, I have a huge se lect ion of DIY gear, you name i t , table saws, dr i l l s , hammers etc etc , theres an ent i re storage area in the studio fu l l of the stuff ! A l l work carr ied out , paint ing and decorat ing , p lumbing , e lectr ica l , great pr ices , f ree est imates!

When Colours CollideInterview with. . . . .

Name: Josh Dunning Bass/VocalsAge: .23My favourite thing in the whole world is : My mum and pizzaI real ly hate: SharksI have a pet: dog! Wel l 2 dogsBut I would l ike a pet: baby dragonMy favourite colour is : BlueI love eat ing: P izza and poptarts How did you choose the name of your band Have you changed the band’s name before? We or ig inal ly had the name “ The 59th Sound” but changed to When Colours Col l ide. The 4 of us have real ly d i fferent personal i t ies that mix very wel l , so we thought why not use colours as our personal i ty as a name and after a homosexual moment we came up with when colours col l ide

What genre of music do you consider your work to be? Who are your major inf luences? I t ’s a real ly weird mix. We have songs which are pop punk to screaming , then jazzy up beat acoust ic songs. Feb 2011 What inspired you to make music together?Shannon and I have been writ ing music for a few years just mess ing around with th ings but nothing too ser ious. which I th ink is important in a band. So hopeful ly we can keep evolv ing as we go. Are you seeking fame and fortune? I would by ly ing i f I sa id I wouldn’t l ike i t haha, but not so much seeking i t though. We just want to wr ite good music together and feel good about i t and play i t to people who wi l l ta lk to their f r iends about i t and remember a good night out . What advice do you have for people who want to form their own bands?Just wr i te anything you feel! Ta lk to your f r iends and te l l them to p ick up a guitar or some st icks or anything! I f they a lready p lay then have a jam and just p lay. The sound wi l l come after. and just make magic! Never g ive up even when things look dark and an endless tunnel . I t ’s about the love for the music . How can fans-to-be gain access to your music? We have facebook, myspace, t r ip le J J J unearthed s i tes that have our songs up. I f you l ike what you hear and want to buy a cd or merch we have a contact page on there. Do you guys have any other hobbies besides, obviously, making music? We al l have d i fferent hobbies l ike Cooking , p lay ing Xbox, F ish ing , P ing Pong lot ’s of embarrass ing th ings

What ’s your most embarrass ing experience? Ooo I once threw a can of redbul l off a stage to somebody te l l ing them to catch i t and don’t be s i l ly and miss i t haha. She ended up not looking at a l l and by acc ident

I broke her nose…. I fe l t so bad and real ly embarrassed haha. Sorry i f you read th is! What ’s your dream hol iday? Christmas town from the nightmare before chirstmas! I f only I could I go there haha. What is your music background: We a l l have been play ing music s ince ear ly ages. Not together but growing up I remember I was a lways h i tt ing pots and pans. S inging in to shampoo bott les . I can’t remember any of my fami ly p lay ing music so I might be adopted haha. Lips L ike Brai l leNew Single Review

“You’ll Go Far In This Business, Darling”

Since the last review, Lips like Braille have released a new track and have asked me to review it. The new single is called “You’ll Go Far In This Business, Darling” this track has everything, from shrieking guitar, smooth screamo vocals to videogame sound effects.

The track begins with a videogame Voice saying “Round 1”, before, what I can only describe as ‘demonic’ screams. The first 18 seconds are very heavy metal, with loud guitar screams.

Tyler’s voice kicks in with a less drastic tone than the ‘demonic’, and a more rock sound takes over. The drumming was very good throughout the song, with a thumping steady beat. This was supported by rigor-ous guitar strumming. About half way through, the ‘demonic’ screams return, giving that metal edge back to the track.

At times the lyrics are hard to make out during the track, but that should be expected with this type of track! The final moments of the track hear the “finish her” and “Fatality” videogame sound effects from Mortal Kom-bat.

I think “You’ll Go Far In This Business, Darling” will appeal more to the “grunge/metal” scene. However the last EP was more eclectic, in the way each track was different. The thing that kept me hooked during this track was the guitaring.

I would recommend this track to fans of metal or anyone who just likes it loud! I found it hard to compare the track to any other bands out there right now.

CITY DJ’S LAUNCH PARTY!At the E lectr ic C ircus

30 June 2011

The band “Everyday at Ten” who were the New Band on the Scene in the f i f th issue of The Rockette, invited me to the City DJ ’s Launch party as a guest of theirs . We knew we had a VIP table set as ide for us, so we weren’t in too much of a rush to get in their ear ly. However, when we did get there, we found there was no wheelchair access and we had to turn around and head back home to get a set of ramps. Then i t was straight back to the venue. We eventual ly got to our table at around 9.30pm.

Due to our extended tr ip, back n’ forth n’ back n’ forth, when we got there “Greg Wilson” was a lready on stage, he was a pretty good DJ and his outtake on modern music combined with his DJ ski l ls was an impress ive start to the night. Personal ly though, I preferred his s lower remixes to the upbeat numbers. He even mixed tracks by Greenday and The Prodigy which I real ly enjoyed! My dad being a bit of an aging rocker and general ly a bit of an “old fart ” was just gett ing into “f i restarter ” when i t suddenly froze leaving him total ly disappointed. The DJ, being up to the task, quickly and seamless ly switched decks!!!

S i tt ing there enjoying both the ambiance and a beer and l istening to Greg mixing his tracks, I fe l t a tap on my shoulder. There stood Mike, tonight ’s main DJ and former sound guru for Everyday at Ten. He had spotted me through the crowd and came over for a chat.

Just a very short t ime later, Daryl , lead vocal ist f rom Everyday at Ten came over for a bit of a chat. He apologised for the access di f f icult ies we had gett ing into the place. He had been down to have a look at access and presumed the venue would have a ramp. Steph one of my PA’s who was with me was k inda shocked that everyone seemed to know me. She said a l l the guys seemed real ly nice. I couldn’t d isagree!

There was a short inter lude fol lowing Greg ’s set , just enough t ime to a l low Everyday at Ten to set up on stage. The band now has a new l ine up with new members Danny and Jamie jo ining up with old members Daryl and Dave. Dave had set up an electr ic drum kit , which looked more l ike a set of drums from ‘guitar hero’ than we are used to seeing.

This was the second t ime I had seen this band; the f i rst was during “Haddow Fest ”, which I reviewed ear l ier in the year, however, this was the f i rst t ime I had seen the new l ine-up! Tonight, due to unforeseen t ime constraints , the band only had t ime to perform one track. The track was

a brand new track cal led “ l i f t you up”. Judging by the posit ive response, the crowd seemed to enjoy i t . I ’m sure a l l the guys were pleased about that. I just wish they had been given more t ime and done a bit more!

Soon after that i t was t ime for Mike to DJ. But before he took to the stage, he came over for another wee chat. He offered me any song I wanted, he would play for me! But I told him just to play anything that he thought I might l ike. Mike then took to the stage. Mike opened his set with a rocking Motown medley remix, which seemed to get everyone going as the dance f loor was f i l l ing quickly. Steph being a bit of a DJ fan said she l iked Mike better than Greg!

Sadly however, my table was r ight on the edge of the dance f loor and the more i t f i l led up the more crowded out we became. So I decided to cal l i t a n ight.

I made my way over to the stage to say bye to Mike, who blew me a k iss . On our way to the exit we bumped into Dave from Everyday at Ten. He thanked us for coming to see them again. Al l in a l l , despite the access problems, i t was a good night.

Everyday at TenArt of Pr iv i lege are a four piece grunge rock band from Edinburgh who have previously featured in The Rockette. The band formed in ear ly 2010, the band is made up of Mart in Gray - Vocals/Rhythm Guitar, Chr is Aien - Lead Guitar, Chr is Chapman - Bass (Temp), Jamie Hughson – Drums! Over the last few Months the band has been playing anywhere and everywhere, bui ld ing up a fol lowing. After recently meeting Jamie at a g ig , he asked i f I would write a review of their current EP. As usual , I was more than wi l l ing!!!

Art of Privi lege - Like Aviation EP review

Track 1 – Conf l ictThis track opened with a def inite “rock” feel to i t . I t has a very catchy rhythm to i t with a hint of “Kings of Leon”. This song f lows very wel l . Love the guitar solos throughout this track, part icular ly the electr ic solo about 20 seconds in. There is an excit ing mix of moshing and air guitar sequences for a l l those in the audience who l ike to bui ld up a sweat. The lyr ics on the EP are c lear and wel l performed and total ly complement the track. I can def initely see this band hitt ing the top!

Track 2 - L ike Aviat ionThis track begins s lower and heavier. The vocals too are deeper and heavier. St i l l very rock or ientated there is a just a hint of grunge! At t imes there is a Manson feel to the lyr ics . (Do not confuse Manson with Hanson, that ’s just wrong!) Just after half way through, there is a mind bending guitar solo to blow your socks off.

Track 3 – Hero With a dist inct Nickelback feel to this track and along with i ts ready made t i t le , this would make a great track for a Superhero movie. I t ’s has a quick and excit ing pace; loaded with br i l l iant lyr ics the vocals are mind-blowing! L ike I keep saying this band is amazing! About three quarters of the

way through the track there was yet another fantast ic , a l though shorter, guitar solo. I would be a damsel in distress any day i f I got to l i sten to this t i l l my hero came! This was my favourite track on the EP!

Track 4 - From her Point of ViewA much s lower track with an “Al ice in Chains” feel . Completely di f ferent from al l the other tracks so far. L isten careful ly and you wi l l p ick up on the s low and del iberate heartbeat of the track which f lows from the beginning. The tempo rhythmical ly bui lds up and drops down. I t ’s one of those ‘Jamaican Woodbine’ tracks, best l i stened to with the heady smel l of oregano in the air and a fr iendly game of pass the parcel in the room.

Track 5 - Another Acid DayPuddle of Mudd, Creed and Raidiohead came to mind whi le l i stening to this track. Fast n’ explosive would be a good way to descr ibe i t . I t just doesn’t let up! I t conjures up images of huge crowds with their f ists pumping in the air! And i f this band keeps knocking out tracks l ike this , then that is exact ly what ’s to come.

Track 6 - Most T ired L iePretty s imi lar to the previous track, another fast paced stonking rock track. There is the obvious modern day comparisons to the bands mentioned above. However, again and again I fe lt there were dist inct s imi lar i t ies to the biggest rock bands of the 80’s and 90’s , part icular ly in their guitar solos. I t won’t be long unt i l they are throwing TV ’s from hotel windows and parking Rol ls Royce’s in swimming pools .

Overal lTheir music has a l l the attr ibutes of many legendary rock bands of the past , with a twist of many of their modern day equivalents. There may be those of you out there who think they are a band out of t ime, but I th ink they are br inging i t back, up-dated!!! As the number of their fol lowers swel ls , as I am sure i t wi l l , I bel ieve Art of Pr iv i lege are a huge rock band in wait ing.
