ESLON THERMOPLASTICS
2. Only use approved chemicals. Certain chemicals, especially petroleum distillates and derivatives, cancause failure. Every chemical should be verified andapproved in the manufacturers chemical resistancechart (see pages 78 through 89).
System Design1. Allow for flexibility in the design of the system.
Expansion and contraction is greater than for metals. This can cause breaks and leaking points if systemdesign is not flexible to allow for movement. Whenlaying smaller diameters of pipe below ground, thepipe should be snaked in the trench to allow forexpansion and contraction. If solvent cement weldingis used for the method of joining, snaking, pressuretesting, and pipe movement should not be done untilafter the joints have been given sufficient time to dry.
2. Design safeguards into the system to prevent
excessive surge pressures. Water hammer (surge)in a PVC and CPVC system can cause pipe, fittings, and valves to burst. Liquid velocities should notexceed five feet per second maximum.
Installation1. Carefully follow solvent cement welding instruc-
tions (see pages 70 through 73). Failure to correctlyfollow application procedures can reduce the strengthand integrity of joints and cause joint failures. By far, themajority of failures in PVC and CPVC systems are theresult of shortcuts and/or improper joining techniques.
2. Remove rocks and other debris that can rupturepipe when burying pipe in trenches. When laying
PVC and CPVC pipe below the ground, care shouldbe taken to remove all rocks, boards, empty primerand cement cans, brushes, bottles and other debrisfrom the trench. Backfilling and top loading should bewatched very carefully.
3. Follow recommended support spacing for PVCand CPVC piping systems (see chart on page 67).The modulus of elasticity of PVC and CPVC pipe issmaller than it is for metal pipes. Maximum workingtemperature and room temperature should be consid-ered when determining the required support spacing.
Testing1. NEVER use compressed air or gas or air-over-
water boosters to pressure test PVC or CPVCpiping systems. ONLY hydrostatic pressure testingis to be conducted on PVC and CPVC piping systems(see page 73 for proper procedures). Compressed airor gases can surge to high pressures and causeexplosive failures that could seriously injure personnel.
2. Carefully follow all instructions for hydrostaticpressure testing (see page 73). Failure to followthese instructions can result in a system failure.
3. Before water-testing a system, always bleed allentrapped air from system. Entrapped air is amajor cause of surge and burst failure in plastic pipingsystems.
Safety PrecautionsPVC and CPVC plastic piping systems will give excellent,maintenance-free performance over many years usewhen the application and system design is correct forthe product and installation is properly done. It is mostimportant to know the physical properties and limitations
of PVC and CPVC plastic pipe when selecting thesematerials for an application and when designing thesystem for their use (see pages 5 and 6 for more infor-mation about the limitations of PVC and CPVC pipe).
In every case, carefully read and follow installationprocedures. It is very important to know the reputationand abilities of your installation crew or contractor.Professional engineering design of the system andclose supervision of the assembly-installation proce-dures are highly recommended. Any questions con-cerning the application or installation of PVC and CPVCpiping products should be directed to the supplier, manufacturer or consultant.
General1. Protect plastic pipe from contact with hard and
pointed objects. Impact resistance is lower than formetals.
2. Avoid bending pipe. Pipe should not be bent intrenches or in above ground installations. Pipe and
joints that are stressed reduce pressure rating andcan cause failures.
3. Protect pipe from extreme heat and cold. Ex-tremes of heat and cold can cause failure. Allowingliquids to freeze inside PVC/CPVC and metallic pipingcan cause the pipe and/or the joints to crack. Freezeprotection should be designed into the system. Heatbeyond design limits can also cause failures.
4. Protect pipe from sunlight. PVC and CPVC pipecompounds normally do not provide extended protec-tion from the ultraviolet rays of the sun. Therefore, unless the material has been specially formulated toprovide protection, the product must be protected
from sunlight or some damage may occur after yearsof exposure. (See page 53 for additional information.)
Application1. NEVER use PVC and CPVC piping materials to
transport compressed air or gases. Compressedair or gases can surge to high pressures and causeexplosive failures that could seriously injure person-nel. PVC and CPVC pipe and fittings are excellentproducts for transporting water and corrosive chemi-cals, but there are a number of other piping productsthat are especially suited for compressed air andgases. (See pages 5 and 6 for more informationabout the limitations of PVC and CPVC pipe.)
Failure to follow the safety precautions below mayresult in misapplication or improper installation andtesting which can cause severe personal injury and/or property damage.

Physical Properties of PVC and CorzanTMCPVCPoly(Vinyl Chloride) PVC
This thermoplastic material is the largest volume mem-ber of the vinyl family. It is the most widely used mate-rial for plastic pipe, valves, and fittings.
PVC has many advantages over conventional pipingmaterials. Just a few are:Corrosion Resistance - outstanding chemicalresistance to nearly all acids, alkalis, alcohols, halogens and many other corrosive materials.Fluid Friction - less friction loss as compared to metal-lics. Lower pressure drop = smaller pumps = lesselectricity.Thermal- lower thermal conductivity than formetallics. Less moisture condensation, reduced heatloss, and more uniform fluid temperature. (Insulation isusually not required.)Electrical- a non-conductor of electricity. Eliminatesgalvanic or electrolytic corrosion that causes expen-
sive repairs.Other - weather resistant, high strength-to-weight ratio, dent resistant, non-toxic, maintains properties overlong periods of time, easy to install, maintenance-free.
Chlorinated Poly(Vinyl Chloride) CPVCAn industrial thermoplastic piping material which canbe used for higher temperature applications. It is aspecialty polymer with a higher glass transition point, which means advantages over regular PVC pipe andfittings while retaining the excellent chemical resistantproperties of PVC.
CPVC retains its mechanical strength at highertemperatures.
CPVC = 200F Max.PVC = 140F Max.
PVC and Corzan CPVC pipe and fittings compoundare blended according to strict industry guidelines.Specifications and requirements are set forth by agencies such as the American Society for Testing andMaterials (ASTM) and NSF International (NSF). Com
pliance with these standards assures the customer thathey are receiving products manufactured from materiathat will perform the tasks for which they are designed

* NOTE: All Eslon products are manufactured from rigid,un-plasticized compounds. This rigidmaterial is alsoreferred to as U-PVC.
DUCTILITY AND IMPACT RESISTANCEPVC and CPVC piping materials are only to be used forliquid service. They must never be used to conveycompressed air or gas. Compressed air or gases cansurge to high pressures and cause failures that couldseriously injure personnel. Unlike other plastic pipingmaterials such as some types of ABS compounds, PVCand CPVC piping materials do not possess the ductility
and impact resistance required for compressed air/gasservice (Note: Not all ABS piping systems are de-signed to transport compressed air/gas). If PVC orCPVC pipe is used to convey compressed air or gas,an explosive failure in the system can occur resulting insharp fragments accelerated by rapidly decompressingair. This explosive hazard is also present if compressedair or gas, or an air-over-water booster is used topressure test a PVC or CPVC piping system.
PVC and CPVC piping materials must be selected, installed, and tested by qualified persons who areknowledgeable in the application, design, installation, and testing of PVC and CPVC piping systems alongwith the associated hazards.

(1.) A significant charge of static electricity can begenerated by the flow of air through plastic duct,
particularly under very dry conditions. If combus-tible particles or gases are being transported, thenvarious electrical ground techniques must be ap-plied. An expert in this area should be consultedduring the design phase.
(2.) The need for closed-head sprinkler systemsmay be necessary if combustible residues oroxidizable materials are likely to accumulate inthe duct work over a period of time.
(3.) Chemical resistance and operating tem-peratures must be evaluated in the same manneras for standard PVC pipe. When in doubt, consult the factory or fabricator.
