Where Problems Become Solutions™

Thermo Technologies, LLC is leading the way in the develop-ment of new and innovative prod-ucts to combat the devastating losses of lives and property brought annually from fires. The Solution for Fire Professionals.™

Thermo-Gel® is a gel concentrate which, when added to water, transforms into a fire preventing and heat absorbing Class A fire retardant gel. The gel particles, which are filled with water, adhere directly to the burning material and in doing so, aid in the quick extinguishment of fire. Thermo-Gel® clings to glass, metal, roof overhangs and all types of surfaces creating a superior gelled water barrier that effectively protects a home or structure for several hours. Thermo-Gel® is environmentally compatible, it can be used on all types of trees and vegetation.

After the fire danger has passed, Thermo-Gel® is designed to be rinsed off with plain water or will naturally degrade from exposure to sunlight which makes the product environmentally friendly. Thermo-Gel® is highly effective in fighting all types of active fires, including wildland fires, prescribed burns, urban-interface fires and in protecting all types of structures. Thermo-Gel® is far more effec-tive than Class A foam, which uses encapsulated air rather than encap-sulated water to attack fires and provide exposure and vertical structure protection to valuable homes and structures.

Suppression Test: Thermo-Gel® vs. Class A Foam

SU

PPRE

SSION Tests have been completed, demonstrat-

ing the effectiveness of Thermo-Gel® over Class A foam when being used as a tool to suppress fires. Tire fires, as well as landfill fires, are difficult to extinguish and because of constant re-kindling they need to be su-pervised for hours, which translates into lost time and high cost to fire departments. The results below show that Thermo-Gel® is more effective than Class A foam. Thermo-Gel® accomplishes this by attacking the fire with water filled gel particles rather than air filled bubbles, allowing more prod-uct to penetrate the seat of the fire. Thermo-Gel® leaves behind a gelled wa-ter blanket that insulates the tires from heat thus eliminating rekindling and saving valu-able firefighting time.

Thermo-Gel® reduced the extinguishment time by 60% and used 55% less water than the Class A foam!

Class A Foam @ 1% eduction.

Thermo-Gel® @ 1% eduction.

Test material was 660 lbs. of tires that was allowed to burn for 8 minutes before beginning suppression with both products.

The following test was performed in conjunction with a California fire depart-ment and clearly demonstrates the effec-tiveness of Thermo-Gel® over Class A foam when being used for home or struc-ture protection. Half of the home was treated with a structure protection Class A foam and the other half was treated with Thermo-Gel®. Chevron training fuel was ignited and burned for 10 minutes in conjunction with a mechanical fan that simulated wind. The results of the test as noted below are both amazing and dramatic. The side of the home treated with Class A foam was a total loss, yet the Thermo-Gel® treated side re-mained completely protected throughout the entire test. This test clearly demonstrates the supe-rior performance that Thermo-Gel® pro-vides versus Class A foam.

Untreated Bale Class A Foam Bale Thermo-Gel® Bale 1650 Degrees Fahrenheit 1450 Degrees Fahrenheit 100 Degrees Fahrenheit!!

Adjacent structure protection or expo-sure protection has become a problem for all city and rural fire departments. Sav-ing surrounding homes during a structure fire is as important as extinguishing the fire. Using simple plastic bales in a labora-tory environment, we were able to again demonstrate the effectiveness of Thermo-Gel® over Class A foam.

Three plastic bales were used, one remained untreated, one was treated with Class A foam and the third was treated with Thermo-Gel®. The untreated plastic bale was ignited and allowed to burn for 40 minutes. At the end of the test two items were noted. The first was that the untreated bale and the bale treated with Class A foam were com-pletely destroyed, while the bale treated with Thermo-Gel® re-mained unharmed. The second item was the peak temperature reading taken of each bale. The untreated and Class A foam treated bales reached in excess of 1,400 degrees Fahrenheit, while the Thermo-Gel® treated bale reached only 100 degrees Fahrenheit!

Aviation Applications

Thermo Technologies has been working with contractors and agencies to develop new and inno-vative methods of loading of Thermo-Gel® on different types of SEATS, fixed wing tankers and helicopters. This cooperative effort has led to the effective use of Thermo-Gel® being dropped from S-2T’s, SEAT’s and helicopters in North America.

The FireDos®, a water driven proportioner, is capable of pump-ing up to 5,000 gallons per minute, offering the aviation industry a state-of-the-art delivery system. This precise mixing and metering system is able to produce a wide variety of mixed percentages. Air attack officers and incident commanders are able to choose the coverage and protection they need.

Another innovation developed in conjunction with the firefighting agencies and contractors is the Thermo-Gel® Mobile Gel Plant. This trailer mounted system is capable of delivering 40,000 to 60,000 gallons of mixed gel to a fire incident.

A fugitive, USDA approved, food grade dye is available and can be introduced into the mixed gel, providing superior visibility and biodegradability.

Commercial & Industrial Applications

Although Thermo-Gel® is a Class A fire additive, it is still very effective in the event of large chemical pool fires and fuel fires in general. In many cases, when a large chemical fire starts, the fire-fighters simply try to control the fire and protect adjacent structures and fuel tanks. A simple, but effective, gelled water coating will provide hours of adjacent structure and fuel tank protection. Because Thermo-Gel® insulates, it does not allow the ad-jacent object to be heated to the point of ignition. Once the fire has been con-tained and extinguished, the gel coating can be rinsed clean with plain water or it can be left to natu-rally degrade from the exposure to the sunlight. Contact Thermo Technologies today for a private demonstration and consultation.

Thermo-Gel® also offers the private business owner and corporations the ability to protect their investment. Insurance policies provide little protection against a total loss of prop-erty and inventory. Some businesses are only covered for a small percent-age of their inventory and a large catastrophic fire can be the end of the line for many companies. Many private logging companies, oil refineries, fuel tank farms and chemical plants deal with fire as a ma-jor hazard on a daily basis. Compa-nies have even taken the steps to train employees in the techniques of con-trolling and extinguishing fires. Thermo-Gel® applied either by simple nozzle eduction or by use of the new FireDos® water driven proportioner, provides another tool for business owners and fire fighters for protecting their valuable assests.

Thermo-Gel® has been effec-tively used on wildland fires, tire fires, structure fires, prescribed burns, home/structure protection and is used to protect fire en-gines and its operators in the event of a burn over. The product is designed not only to rapidly extinguish a fire using significantly less water, but also provides a fire depart-ment and homeowner with the means of protecting a home or structure during a wildfire. Thermo Technologies contin-ues to work daily on new meth-ods of delivering Thermo-Gel® using simple and effective equip-ment.

Thermo Technologies is develop-ing innovative equipment that will allow the homeowner to protect their home. There will soon be manual and automated systems that, with the push of a button, will disperse a Thermo-Gel® protective gelled water blanket and will provide several hours of fire protection when it is needed most.
