The project aims to improve health and functional outcomes of wheelchair users by increasing their knowledge of appropriate wheelchair use and their role in the wheelchair service delivery process, and providing supportive technologies to assist them in leading a healthy lifestyle. 288995 (Dicianno PI) 04/01/15 – 04/30/16 2.40 Calendar Months Craig H. Neilsen Foundation Yearly Directs: $28,507 Co-I Telewellness Support Systems for Spinal Cord Injury We propose that the iMHere group will have improved psychosocial and medical outcomes compared to the standard of care only group. We also will carry out a usability study to determine what modifications need to be made to the system for those with higher levels of impairment who have difficulty accessing a smartphone even with accessibility functions. 1U01DD001078-01 (Dicianno) 09/01/14 – 08/31/19 0.24 Calendar Months NIH Yearly Directs: $2,263 Co-I Comp B-National SB Patient Registry at the University of Pittsburgh The objective of this proposal is to continue participation of the University of Pittsburgh in the National Spina Bifida Patient Registry (NSBPR). The University of Pittsburgh has been a funded registry site since 2011. We propose a research subproject within this award that addresses three aims: 1) Describe more fully the neurological and functional classification of individuals with spina bifida, 2) Determine which additional variables contribute significantly to ambulatory and transfer ability, and 3) Develop and validate a “Spina Bifida Impairment Scale” that can be used to accurately quantify motor and sensory deficits in individuals with spina bifida. The goal of this project is to develop, prototype and test a new wheelchair as part of the AgileLife PTS that would accommodate bariatric individuals (e.g. over 250 lbs) and a tilt feature on both the standard (weight capacity under 250 lbs) and bariatric wheelchair models. The new designs will be iteratively developed in collaboration with the University of Pittsburgh. Eight commercial ready prototypes will be built that meet the user, technical and manufacturing requirements established by expert panel review, wheelchair standards testing, and in-lab evaluations. Clinical Trials Award #3064 Paralyzed Veterans of America Research Foundation 5/1/2016-4/30/2018 $149,781 Effect of Vibration Exercise on Upper Limb Strength, Function, and Pain Specific Aim: The primary purpose of this pilot randomized control trial is to explore the benefits of vibration dumbbell resistance training over standard dumbbell resistance training to improving upper limb strength, propulsion and transfer function and upper limb pain among manual wheelchair users. Role: Co-I Additional Studies that I am Co-I on and assist with but do not provide salary support:
