    The persona has said that someone has died in theopposite house. He knows because of the sadnessof the faces of the family members. The neighborsvisit the family. Theres so much activity going on.Someone mechanically opens the window. A

    mattress is thrown out. The children who arequickly walking past witness this and wonder if thedead person died on it.

    The minister arrives and takes control of thesituation as well as the people in the house. Thenthe hat- maker arrives to prepare a hat for the

    dead man. Soon the undertaker arrives to preparethe coffin. The funeral procession will be apartsoon begin. Decorated coaches followed by themourners dressed in black will be apart of theprocession. Therefore everyone knows that thereis a funeral because of all these signs.

    Theres been a death in theopposite house

    As lately as today.

    I know it by the numb look

    such houses have always

    The neighbors rustle in andout,

    The doctor drives away.

    A window opens like a pod,

    Abrupt, mechanically;

    Somebody flings a mattressout,

    The children hurry by;

    They wonder if It died onthat,

    I used to when a boy.

    The minister goes stiffly inAs if the house were his,

    And he owned all themourners now,

    And little boys besides;

    And the milliner and the man

    Of the appalling trade,

    To take the measure of thehouse.

    Therell be the dark parade

    Of tassels and coaches soon;

    Its easy as a sign,

    The intuition of the news

    In just a country down.

    Stanza 1 : line 1 and 2

    - Somebody has died in the opposite house.

    line 3 and 4

    - The persona can tell because of the somber and dismal

    atmosphere of the house.

    Stanza 2 : line 1 and 2

    - The neighbors come and go.

    - rustle mean the neighbors ( the ladies) come in and out wearing

    long dresses.- The doctor leaves.

    - The doctor came to make certain that the man has died.

    line 3 and 4

    - The window opens suddenly.

    Stanza 3 : line 1 and 2- Someone throws the mattress out.

    - The mattress was thrown out because they were afraid

    that was contagious disease that could be spread throughthe mattress.

    - The children walked past quickly.

    line 3 and 4- They thought someone has died on the mattress.

    - they wonder if It died on that

    - The word it refer to the died man.

    Stanza 4 : line 1 and 2- The priest comes and takes charge of everything.

    - The minister is refer to the priest.

    - He goes in the house with authority.

    - The priest came to talk about the good deeds of thedeceased and remind the mourners about death.

    - He has everyones attention including the boys

    Stanza 5 : line 1 and 2- The hat maker and the undertaker( coffin maker) arrive to

    take measure of the coffin

    line 3 and 4- People wear dark clothes.

    - They feeling sad and there are somber atmosphere at thefuneral.

    - dark parade refer to the funeral.

    Stanza 6 : line 1 and 2- The funeral procession uses coaches which are decorated

    to send the dead body (coffin) to the graveyard.

    - It is easy to tell that a death has occurred through thesesigns such as the doctor , priest, dark clothes and the

    dismal atmosphere.

    Line 3 and 4- The news of a death spreads easily and quickly in a small

    rural town.

    Death is a natural

    occurrence. Yet, it is a sadevent for those who lose a

    loved one (the people are

    numb with grief).

    There is nothing last forever.

    We need to carry out certain rituals during a

    funeral.

    People fear but they have to accept it as apart of life.

    In all societies, attending a funeral is a social

    obligation.

    The importance of preserving and practising

    custom and tradition.

    Importance of cooperation feeling of

    togetherness.

    Example : a window opens like a pod,(Line 7)

    When a pod is being opened it is done

    without any feeling or emotion.

    The action is sudden and abrupt.

    The window in the house seems to be opened

    in the same impression, that it is opened

    abruptly and mechanically

    When the poet describes the house as being

    numb, it is given a human quality.

    The house seem to be like a grieving person,

    therefore has a numb look.

    The line could also refer to the occupants or

    the family of the deceased who are numd

    with grief.

    Example : rustle

    The poet use the word to indicate the sound

    of the swishing of skirts and coats heardwhen neighbours move in and out of the

    house to pay their respects to the deceased.

    When someone moves in a silk dress. The

    dress makes a rustling sound.

    The poet is saying that there is a lot of

    movement when people enter and then leave

    the house.
