Lipe, professor in the Department of Anthropology, was awarded the WSU Libraries Faculty Award for 2000 on April 12. Profes- sor Lipe is the 15th recipient of this award. Over the past 24 years at WSU, Prof. Lipe has actively assisted in the acquisition of an extensive collection of resources in the fields of anthro- pology and archaeology, which sup- port bachelors, masters, and doctor- ate degrees. He regularly alerts the anthropology subject librarian to new materials which are particularly important for acquisition and makes frequent recommendations for the purchase of relevant books, docu- ments, grey literature, and serials. In addition, he has donated numerous resources to the Libraries from his own personal collection and from the Department of Anthropology when serving as chair. Mary Nofsinger, reference librarian and nominator for the award, noted, “He has always been generous with sage advice and accurately conveys the scholarly needs of anthropology faculty, graduate students, and un- dergraduates.” extensively. Nancy L. Baker, direc- tor of libraries, in her comments at the ceremony, noted that “I have often appreciated Dr. Lipe’s sincere interest in the WSU Libraries and have enjoyed working cooperatively with him.” Previous faculty award recipients include C. Gardner Shaw, William E. Brandt, Tyre A. Newton, Kirk D. McMichael, Melvin Gibson, George Kennedy, Donald Bushaw, John Elwood, Paul Brians, Jacque- line Peterson, Loran Olsen, Bruce McFadden, Richard G. Law, and Robert Speth. Private financial support comes to the WSU Libraries in many ways and from many friends of the University. Some donors make unrestricted gifts that are used for the Library’s greatest needs. Others place their gift in an endowment or make it a current-expenditure gift. You can also support the Library through a planned gift. This arrange- ment enables you to retain an interest in L. to r.: Nancy Baker, director of libraries; Professor William Lipe, Anthropology; and Mary Nofsinger, reference librarian. As a teacher, Prof. Lipe strongly encourages his students to utilize library resources for research and class assignments. He also frequent- ly refers to library materials in his class presentations and serves as a diligent academic model for gradu- ate and undergraduate students. With regard to his own research, he continues to utilize library resources your gift, such as the right to receive income from it, or to make the gift through your estate. The Office of Gift and Estate Planning staff can help you sort through the options and decide on a gift plan that best suits your charitable interest and financial situation. Hail and FarewellIt has been a privilege to serve as thedirector of libraries at WashingtonState University for the last nineyears. So it will come as no surprisethat I announce my resignation fromWSU with very mixed emotions. Thissummer I will become the next Uni-versity Librarian at the University ofIowa.

Although I have loved many aspectsof my current position, one of mygreatest pleasures has been the oppor-tunity to get to know so many of you.The WSU Libraries have been fortunateto have many good friends and sup-porters during my tenure. I have en-joyed the conversations I have had withWSU alums, reminiscing about theircollege experiences. Many of ourfriends have fond memories of workingin the Libraries during their studentdays. For many of these individuals, student employment made it possiblefor them to afford college. Other

friends are“bookpeople”who cher-ish theintellectu-al pursuitsembodiedin thebook. Some of our friends have em-braced technology, recognizing itspotential for increasing access to infor-mation and scholarly publications. Allof them have shared my belief thatlibraries continue to be the intellectualcenter of the university. Only withexcellence in libraries can you haveexcellence in academic programs.

During these nine years, we haveopened a large, beautiful, and veryfunctional library addition to theHolland Library that has transformedour services. We installed a new on-line catalog that serves not only as acomputerized listing of our librarycollections, but also as a gateway toother electronic information resourc-es available off-site. Many wonderfulcollections were donated to the Li-

Bissinger Endowment EstablishedA $2.5 million gift from the estateof the late Mildred S. Bissinger,a longtime friend of the Libraries, has come to WSU, and nearly$500,000 of the gift is earmarkedfor the Manuscripts, Archives, andSpecial Collections unit of theLibraries.

The establishment of the John C.and Mildred S. Bissinger MASCExcellence Endowment will be feltfor generations by assuring themost up-to-date equipment, materi-als, and resources for preservation. Her gift will also enable the Librar-ies to purchase topical materialsthat she enjoyed—poetry, history, philosophy, and fine-press books.

Laila Miletic-Vejzovic, head ofMASC, noted the impact that Mrs.Bissinger had on the Libraries. “Mrs.Mildred Bissinger was always veryhappy to give, not expecting any-thing. Her generous giving cannot becompared with little gifts, like WSUPress books I sent her at Christmastime. Still, she was very grateful andwould acknowledge them as perfectgifts. As per her words, she needednothing and wanted nothing ‘butideas to stimulate her brain.’ Sheremained an avid reader until thevery end. She was one of the mostgenerous persons while living a verymodest life.”

Historic Journals Donated to OwenA.D. Dunn, son of former WSCregent Duncan Dunn, donated150 volumes of the Journal of theAmerican Shorthorn, dating from1879, to the Owen Science andEngineering Library. The collectionextends our holdings to the 1870sand fills in missing volumes. Dunnand his wife, Midge, residents ofZillah, Washington, have been inthe cattle business for manyyears. These journals were part ofthe collections of Dunn’s fatherand grandfather, Captain Dunn, one of the first pioneering settlersin the Yakima Valley.

The Libraries thank the Dunnfamily for its generosity in makingthis gift to the Owen Library.

braries. All of these have served toenhance our academic program in somany ways. With the support of theWashington State Legislature and inpartnership with our sister state-supported college and universities,we developed a joint online catalog ofthe holdings of all libraries, thuscreating a super university library forall the students, faculty, and staff atour six institutions. This CooperativeLibrary Project has also given uselectronic access to the full text ofarticles from many journals. We havebegun digitizing some of our ownunique collections of historical pho-tographs and manuscripts, makingthem accessible at a distance over theInternet. Our library education pro-gram has flourished, ensuring thatstudents develop the critical informa-tion-seeking skills needed to prosperin this “information age.”

Although I will soon be leavingWSU, a part of me will always be aCougar. Thank you for your supportfor the WSU Libraries. It has made allthe difference.
