Next week's readings: Ordinary Time - 10th Sunday
Genesis 3:9-15 2 Corinthians 4:13–5:1 Mark 3:20-35
Jesus instituted a new covenant at the Last Supper, a covenant we share in the Eucharist. The covenant between God and us means that we are deeply connected not only to God, but to one another.
Jesus’ words are repeated at every Mass: Take and eat ... Take and drink ... Do this in memory of me.
What a privilege has been given to us in this modern age. For hundreds of years, the clergy restricted access to the cup to themselves, offering the laity only the body of Christ (and often denied that except on rare occasions). It was only in the 20th Century that regular reception of communion on a weekly basis was restored, and it took place decades after Pope St. Pius X urged it. It took generations for us to understand that participating in Communion was an integral part of participation in the Mass.
How blessed are we at St. John’s to be able to “eat and drink” at every Mass!
In the Words of Pope Francis ...
Excerpts from the Pope’s apostolic exhortation, Evangelii Gaudium (The Joy of the Gospel).
Chapter One – The Church’s Missionary Transformation, continued The second section of this chapter is called “Pastoral Activity and Conversion.” In it Pope Francis writes:
* The parish is not an outdated institution ... * ... precisely because it possesses great flexibility, it can assume quite different contours depending on the openness and missionary creativity of the pastor and the community. * This presumes that it really is in contact with the homes and the lives of its people, and does not become a useless structure out of touch with people or a self-absorbed cluster made up of a chosen few.

Meet Fr. Cezary Kozubek Our new Parochial Vicar is coming to us from St. Peter’s of Waldorf. His name is Fr. Cezary Kozukeb. He is a native of Poland and a classmate of Fr. Tony. From the Catholic Standard 2014: Fr. Cezary Kozubek, said that "the genuine faith of the people" during the last years of communist rule in his native Poland helped form his desire to become a priest. "I still remember the time under the
communist regime in Poland. There were long lines to buy anything, even a loaf of bread, because the shelves were empty. Life was tough," the future priest said. "I could see the enormous determination of many priests and lay people - including my parents - to preserve our Christian identity and freedom." Born in Oświęcim - better known by its German name of Auschwitz - and raised in Rzeszów, Poland, Deacon Kozubek said that he recognized from an early age that, "There was something better I was being deprived from than the reality I was living." Because religious education in public schools was forbidden at that time in Poland, Deacon Kozubek was catechized by Antonina Małysiak who die in 2013 at the age of 94. "She spent all her life as a single person, dedicated to the service to the Church and in a particular way to the religious education of children and youth. She was my first religious education teacher," he said. "During World War II she helped the prisoners of the concentration camp of Auschwitz. Continued on page six

SJB School News Writing is an important skill that is embedded throughout the curriculum at SJB. We realize how important and necessary writing skills are for students so we dedicate ourselves to helping our students grow in these skills while building
confidence. One tradition at SJB is Arts & Academics (A&A). This is an annual event in which all students in the upper grades work through the research process and write a paper. Every year we build upon the skills previously taught and students benefit from this practice. In addition to A&A, through our writing program we offer students various ways to exercise their writing skills in different forms which also calls upon their creativity. This year SJB students were recognized in two writing contests. Both opportunities were wonderful ways for our students to strengthen their writing skills and use their creativity.
Every year SJB appreciates the support of the local community. The Catholic Business Network of Montgomery County (CBN-MC) sponsors an annual high
school essay contest open to 8th grade students. This year we are proud to announce that 8th grader, Riley Langan, was recognized for her essay addressing the topic of extraordinary love. Riley wrote about Gretchen Weichbrod, a young woman who worked beside her mother, Kathy Weichbrod, in the school office for many years. As Riley wrote in her essay, “Gretchen greeted us in the hallways, and she always had a smile on her face. She had a smile that radiated love and joy … She loved us and made us feel loved.”
“Listen to a Life” is another writing opportunity our students participated in this year. Students interviewed an older adult, 50 years or over, about their life experiences. As described on their website, “Everyone on this planet has a unique story – all we have to do is listen. And if we listen, we can change lives, including our own, and change communities.” Another 8th grader, Emma Hickey, was recognized from thousands of entries for her essay about her grandfather who served in the Vietnam War. We are proud of Riley and Emma as well as all of our young writers who have worked hard on developing their writing skills over the past year.
Blessed Angeline of Marsciano’s Story Blessed Angeline founded the first community of Franciscan women other than Poor Clares to receive papal approval. Angeline was born to the Duke of Marsciano near Orvieto. She was 12 when her mother died. Three years later, the young woman made a vow of perpetual chastity. That same year, however, she yielded to her father’s
decision that she marry the Duke of Civitella. Her husband agreed to respect her previous vow.
When he died two years later, Angeline joined the Secular Franciscans and with several other women dedicated herself to caring for the sick, the poor, widows and orphans. When many other young women were attracted to Angeline’s community, some people accused her of condemning the married vocation. Legend has it that when she came before the King of Naples to answer these charges, she had burning coals hidden in the folds of her cloak. When she proclaimed her innocence and showed the king that these coals had not harmed her, he dropped the case.
Angeline and her companions later went to Foligno, where her community of Third Order Sisters received papal approval in 1397. She soon established 15 similar communities of women in other Italian cities.
Angeline died on July 14, 1435, and was beatified in 1825. Her Liturgical Feast Day is July 13. Source: www.americancatholic.org
Fiat Camp Camp for High School Women, rising 9th through 12th Grades, July 27-29, Mount St. Mary’s University, Emmitsburg, MD. Fiat is Latin for “Let it be done.” This was Mary’s response to the angel Gabriel when she was asked to become the mother of Jesus. Mary was called to live courageously. She was called to give her whole life and because of her response, she changed the world. This July, young women from across the Archdioceses of Washington and Baltimore are invited to Fiat Camp. At Fiat Camp they will be challenged to become fully who they are – to embrace the unique gifts given to them by God and to discover the great dignity of their vocation as a woman. The camp includes prayer, talks, and discussions with religious sisters, games and sports. Fee is $150 (sibling discounts & scholarships available). Details and registration at www.quovadisfiat.org.
Quo Vadis Camp
The Office of Priest Vocation’s annual Quo Vadis Camp for high School-aged young men will be held at Mount Saint Mary’s Seminary July 15-18. The four-day camp includes daily Mass, prayer, talks, sports, and much more. Bus transportation is available. More information is available and registration is open at www.DCpriest.org. Please contact the Office of Priest Vocations, [email protected] or 202-636-9020, with any questions.
Mystical Word
L.J. Milone, Director of Adult Faith Formation
Occasionally, I hear people complain that when they go to Sunday Mass, also called the Eucharist, they “don’t get anything out of it.” I suspect most of us have felt like this at times. Mass may not be impacting us emotionally on a given Sunday. Let’s face it, Mass can feel boring. The singing can be off, and the preaching can be uninspiring. Even worse, the people’s behavior can flatly contradict the Gospel being proclaimed. The priest can be so obviously hypocritical, and the regular pew sitters so condescending one would want to run away screaming.
Every parish, every Mass, can fall victim to these dynamics at times, simply because we are human. Still, I wonder if we, in an age of supreme cynicism, often unfairly harangue and judge the Mass? Maybe we don’t give God an opportunity to move us or transform us? And, perhaps most of all, should we come to Mass only when it feels good? This may not be what someone means when they say, “I didn’t get anything out of it,” but it can come off as a rather narcissistic comment.
Mass is not necessarily supposed to make us feel good, nor is it supposed to “give us “something.” The Eucharist is not a consumer product promising to smooth our skin, induce weight loss, or give us a shiny smile. Mass is about God, not about us. We don’t go to Mass for personal gain, but to praise and thank God for what God has done in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Whether through listening to the Word proclaimed, singing, saying “Amen,” or receiving communion, we are centering ourselves on God alone. We become present to God, to the Real Presence, and then become that very Presence for the world as we are sent out to serve. In focusing on God and, through God, loving others, we discover the infinite happiness that was always already within us.
While there might be legitimate complaints about what needs to change in the celebration of Sunday Mass, I think Jesus would rather we start by changing ourselves. Scripture gives us the key. In the readings, the Church lays out a theme for the feast of Corpus Christi: the Eucharist is a sacrifice. It is a sacrificial meal that re-presents the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross, which saves us from sin. Without imposing an absolute interpretation,
we can say that sacrifice means surrender. The sacrifice of Jesus is found in his prayer before dying, “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.” Jesus surrendered himself to his merciful Abba, even when it felt like God wasn’t there. Nothing could have been further from the
truth, but that’s what it felt like. Maybe we, as a people, are not entirely sure how to be at Mass. If the Church emphasizes sacrifice in the readings, and if sacrifice means surrender, maybe that is our clue. How do we understand surrender? How do we practice it? St. John of the Cross calls it the path of nothing. He bases his teaching on Jesus’ teaching in the Sermon on the Mount (Matt. 5:3) about spiritual poverty and his command to deny ourselves, take up our crosses, and lose our lives (Mark 8:34-35). He writes, “To reach satisfaction in all, desire
satisfaction in nothing. To come to possess all, desire the possession of nothing. To arrive at being all, desire to be nothing. To come to the knowledge of all, desire the knowledge of nothing.” We desire, possess, know, and identify with nothing. St. John of the Cross describes a spiritual state in which we stop actively thinking and silently trust in, hope in, and love God alone.
When we’re at Mass, we celebrate by surrendering, by practicing nothingness, or as St. John of the Cross says elsewhere, “being empty in pure negation.” It is a state in which we aren’t clinging to our judgments about Mass and how well or poorly it’s going. Even more, we remain in this state by not thinking at all. We have thoughts. We’ll have loads and loads of thoughts sometimes, but we let them pass through us without thinking about them by reacting to them, resisting them, or holding onto them.
By sharing the meal, the bread and wine transformed in Christ’s Body and Blood, we share in Jesus’ supreme act of self-surrender. St. John writes that when Jesus died on the cross, “He was certainly annihilated in his soul.” Mass is the time when we surrender to God with Jesus through the Spirit. Surrender, silence, nothingness, or whatever we want to call it, is the key to not only celebrating Sunday Mass, but also to letting God be God and allowing Him to transform us through Sunday Mass.

Meet Fr. Cezary Kozubek continued
As an altar server who regularly prayed the rosary with his family, Deacon Kozubeck started attending summer camps sponsored by 'Light-Life,' a Polish ecclesial movement. He said his experience led him to meet "priests and lay people whose authenticity of faith impressed me a lot. It was that time when I first thought about becoming a priest." As he was discerning his vocation, he earned bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Rzeszów, and served for a while as a science and biology teacher. On his way to the priesthood, Deacon Kozubek attended World Youth Days in Paris (1997), Rome (2000), Cologne (2005), Syndey (2008), Madrid (2011) and Rio de Janeiro (2013). He also served for a while as a missionary to Russia and Belarus. He came to the Archdiocese of Washington in 2005 to attend the Redemptoris Mater Seminary here. His experiences with the faith of his family and the priests from his childhood, Antonina Małysiak, "Light-Life" and the Neocatechumenal Way, Deacon Kozubek said, were "all witnesses to me. I saw people who were not afraid to live their faith. I was looking for something authentic, and God gave me this." "To be a priest is to announce the Good News. I see people who are hungry and thirsty for the Good News," he said. "I want to go out and look for the lost sheep. I do not want to be confined to a building, but to go where the people are and share with them that God is the answer to all the questions in our lives - that God can restore lives." He added that, "I am at my happiest when I am sharing my faith with others. If I can manage to share with others what I myself have received, that would bring me great joy."
