2014 was a critical year for Androscoggin Valley Hospital, as we signed a Letter of Intent to affiliate with three other North Country hospitals– Upper Connecticut Valley Hospital in Colebrook, Weeks Medical Center in Lancaster, and Littleton Regional Healthcare. Over the last two years, these hospitals have continued to explore how we can face the challenges of rural, community healthcare in an environment that is experiencing rapid and significant change.
Specific to AVH, we continue to enhance patient care. We are pleased to welcome Dr. Bruce Lastra to our OB/GYN Department. Dr. Lastra joins Dr. Krzysztof “Kris” Plociennik in providing complete women’s care, both within the Valley Birthplace at AVH and their offices within the AVH Professional Center. In addition, Tiffani Witt, PA-C, has joined our Ear, Nose, Throat/Allergy practice. Ms. Witt is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants. Furthermore, Dr. Timothy Sullivan of Eyesight New Hampshire is now performing cataract surgery at AVH, following patient visits to the eyecare providers of Coos Eye Care. These are just a few of the examples of how we continue to Lead the Way to a Healthier Future. Thank you for trusting us with your care.
Yours in good health,

Monica Poulin with her family.
When Monica Poulin went into labor with her first baby, it was determined she would have to have
an emergency C-section. She was terrified, but the nurses and doctors at Androscoggin Valley Hospital immediately helped put her at ease, and she gave birth to a healthy, happy son, Issac.
“I had such a great experience having my first child at AVH, I wouldn’t go anywhere else for my second,” says Monica. In fact, Monica credits AVH with teaching her everything she and her husband needed to know about having children. “From Dr. Kris Plociennik’s prenatal care to the infant CPR and Lamaze classes led by Anne Laroche, everyone was helpful.” As first-time parents, Monica says, “My husband and I were pretty nervous and would call the nurses about five times a day for every little thing, but they always responded by being kind, caring, helpful and unbelievably patient.”
So it’s no surprise that Monica was once again thrilled with the care when she gave birth to her daughter. “When Mya was born, we had the same nurses who had delivered Isaac,” she says. “They spent as much time with us as they possibly could and even sent us
cards in the mail when we got home to let us know they were thinking of us. Talk about exceeding our expectations!”
Monica and her newborns weren’t the only ones who were babied at AVH. “My husband was just as happy as I was. He was able to sleep in the same room with me, and he loved the food. He ate omelets all day long!”
Speaking of her AVH room, both Monica and her husband were im-pressed with how clean, spacious, warm and comfortable it was.
“A friend of mine was considering delivering at another hospital, but I told
her about my wonderful experiences, and she ended up delivering right here in Berlin at AVH,” says Monica. “We go to AVH for pretty much anything we need,” says Monica. “All of my family’s doctors are right there,” she continues.
“I definitely recommend Androscoggin Valley Hospital to everyone who is searching for high-quality care, close to home. The doctors and nurses at AVH are great people, and they take care of everything, no matter how busy they are.”
That kind of care is important to Monica, and why she says, “I wouldn’t go anywhere else.”

What do you do when you are walking with two canes and are told you need two hip replacements? In my case, I went to Androscoggin
Valley Hospital. Being a Berlin resident, I had heard that there was a good orthopaedic surgery practice here. I worked with Dr. Court Stearns who provided recommendations and ordered X-rays. Dr. Tom Rock then performed the surgery.
Within a span of five weeks I had both hips replaced, the most recent taking place this past September. In fact, after the second surgery, they put me in the same inpatient room I had been in after the first surgery. I joked with the nurses, saying, “What do you mean this is the same room? I have never been here before.” I am very happy with the care they provided.
Ten days after the second surgery, I went back to get my stitches removed. Then, 20 days after that, I had another follow-up appointment. Even though I knew it would be challenging, I had the goal of walking straight into the doctor’s office with no cane or walker. I succeeded in doing that. I wanted the staff to know they made the right decision by operating on both hips so close in time to one another.
My quality of life prior to the surgery was quite poor. Before this surgery, I was so disabled. I had served in the Army for 28 years. So, it was common for me to be very physical and in great shape, like a soldier. But this was tough. I had to dig deep. I couldn’t do anything. I couldn’t even pick anything up off the floor. If something fell there, it would have to stay, as I had no way of bending down to pick it up. I couldn’t shovel. I couldn’t chop wood. I had to ride in an electric cart to go shopping. This winter was the best I’ve had in a long time. I could shovel and chop wood. I even climbed Mt. Jasper this spring! I’m walking very well now and everyone’s amazed at my recovery. My body stays straight. I have my life back.
At AVH, the attitude was, “Hi! You’re our patient. We’re going to take care of you.” When I sensed that the staff felt it was their honor to help me, the soldier in me was confident and at peace. —By Doug Chase

Dear Russ Keene:
Your ads state the “Reasons” to choose AVH all the time. My reason,
at first, was because it was simply closer to home than Dartmouth
Hitchcock. I wanted the best care and thought that the smaller, more
removed hospital would only be convenient. My surgery was performed
on September 9. It was a rather serious procedure. I was unaware how
severe it was. I was attended to from the moment I arrived until
the moment I left. The “Reasons” are too many to mention, but
after having spent so many months with a terminally ill wife in
Scottsdale, Arizona (Dec. 2002 – March 2004) and at teaching-
associated hospitals and facilities like the Mayo Clinic, I can only
comment, “WOW!” The reasons why I’ll always choose AVH are:
• Christopher U. Glenney, MD, FACS: Because of his being a
most skillful surgeon and his bedside manner. I’m honored to
have his signature on my person.
• The cleanest and most organized hospital I’ve ever been
associated with.
• Special recognition to the recovery nurses, especially Pam
(PM shift) who made my stay feel like I was at home. She
was truly an angel as I heard the shuffle of her CrocsTM
every 15 minutes or so to see if I needed anything. The
care she provided made my recovery move faster.
• She was supported by yet others: Marisa, Kathy and the LNAs,
Dieticians— all too many to remember and name individually.
These are the reasons why I am so thankful to AVH. THANK YOU!
I hope to not have to return, but would consider no other than AVH.
From, [Patient]
Dear Becky, Karin, Anne, Annie, Jess, Kim, Deb, and Dr. Plociennik:
We’re deeply thankful for the excellent care you provided to our family during the birth and
first days of our son’s life. We
appreciate your efforts to provide
care suited to our preferences while feeling confident in your expertise and professional
judgment. The Valley Birthplace
is a great place to bring a new
life into the world! With gratitude, [Patient and Family]

Recently, it was necessary for me to stay in the hospital. Thankfully, the one I stayed in was Androscoggin Valley Hospital. From the staff that prepared me for surgery, to Drs. Sullivan and Rock and their team who performed the surgery, to the recovery room and 4th floor staffs who provided care that was both attentive and comforting, to the Food Services staff who prepared meals that were enjoyable, my stay was both beneficial to my well-being and one that enabled me to just concentrate on healing. That said, I want to make sure that everyone knows how lucky we are here in the North Country to have a group of healthcare professionals to rely on when situations arise where we need the best of care. From, [Patient]

#Everyone uses the hospital at one time or another, whether it’s for
a happy event, such as the birth of a baby, or for an injury or illness.
Androscoggin Valley Hospital is an integral part of our community, and
