Save the Delta Stop the Tunnels

What is the Delta Crisis?

•  The state has been pumping more water to the Central Valley farmers than the Delta can afford to lose; hence: -  Fish are near extinction due to lack of fresh water. -  Salt water threatens Delta drinking water and farms. -  Invasive plants & toxic algae blooms are increasing.

Why do Farmers need more Water?

•  Corporate agribusinesses in the Central Valley (CV) keep expanding water-thirsty almond orchards.

•  CV farmers are making huge profits from selling almonds to Asia

•  CV farmers profit from reselling cheap agricultural water to cities, charging urban water rates.

Note: These influential corporations have “junior” water rights, but get preferential treatment by the State.

Gov. Brown’s Tunnel Plan

There are Better Alternatives

•  Desalination. •  Groundwater basin re-charging. •  Restoration of the Tulare Lake Basin. •  Regional self-sufficiency; less reliance on the Delta. •  Any destructive project should go around the Delta not

through it (the Eastern Alignment alternative).

Two 40 foot diameter tunnels: 35 miles long and 150 feet deep!

Not looking at all alternatives is “irresponsible, risky, and a disservice to

the taxpayers ..” - U.S. Representative Jerry McNerney

Myth versus Fact MYTH: Earthquake risk in the Delta is high and would

level the levees and risk L.A.’s water supply. FACT: There are no active fault lines under the Delta.

The risk to L.A is a major earthquake along the San Andreas fault in the Central Valley damaging the aqueduct or reservoir.

MYTH: Cities need the tunnels for reliable water. FACT: The tunnels provide no additional water for

cities, yet urban rate payers will pay for them.

MYTH: The intakes for California’s water supply need to be moved upstream to save the fish.

FACT: CV farms pollute the San Joaquin River; now they want the cleaner Sacramento River water.

MYTH: The tunnel plan will save the fish. FACT: Fish need more fresh water flowing through the

Delta. The tunnels will cause even more harm.

The Tunnels will Destroy the Fragile Delta Estuary

Water Quality in the South Delta with the Tunnels

•  Brackish, polluted, stagnant flows.

•  More invasive weeds.

•  More toxic blue-green algae.

Get Smart California!

•  Roll back the last five years’ almond orchard explosion to match need with water availability.

•  Replace thirsty orchards with line crops, raise less beef, and reduce exports of crops to Asia.

•  Stop bottling California water for export. •  Implement better water conservation and recycling. •  Ban ground-water polluting, water-intensive fracking!
