Los estudiantes y la mayoría de losadultos que recuerdan sus días de estudiantes, estánfamiliarizados con la frase “compara y contrasta” quede vez en cuando aparece en las pruebas.

Hoy escuchamos dos relatos diferentes sobre la venida del Espíritu. Contrastemos y luego comparemos.

El relato de Lucas en Hechos está lleno dedetalles impresionantes: el viento poderoso, llamasde fuego como lenguas, el milagro de los diferenteslenguajes.

El relato de Juan parece tímido: discípulos temerosos, el Cristo llagado, el soplo de aliento viene de su cuerpo resucitado y no del cielo.

Nuestras mentes modernas y literalesse preguntan de qué manera sucedió; nuestra ruidosacultura probablemente nos hará preferir el primerrelato. Pero si comparamos los dos, la deslumbranteriqueza del Espíritu llena ambos relatos, ya que es elmismo aliento del Cristo resucitado, ascendido a loscielos en Lucas, el que se aparece a sus discípulosen Juan y envía a sus seguidores a llevar a cabosu misión de perdonar los pecados y proclamar losportentos de Dios.Copyright © J. Students, and most adults recalling their school days, are familiar with the phrase “compare and contrast” that shows up from time to time on tests.

Today we hear two diff erent accounts of the giving of the Holy Spirit to the church. Let’s contrast, then compare.

Luke’s account from Acts is fi lled with arresting details: the mighty wind from heaven, the tongues of fl ame, the miracle of diff erent languages.

John’s account seems timid: fearful disciples, the wounded Christ, the expelling of breath from his risen body, not from the sky.

Our literal, modern minds wonder which way it happened; our noisy culture probably makes us prefer the former. But if we compare the two, we fi nd that the dazzling richness of the Spirit fi lls both accounts, for it is the very breath of the risen Christ, ascended to the sky in Luke, that appears to his disciples in John and sends his followers forth to carry on his mission of forgiving sin and proclaiming the mighty acts of God.Copyright © J. I have been so impressed with how our students and teachers have risen to the call of remote learning since March. Last week we celebrated a virtual Field Day organized by our PE teacher, Sean Bayer, with content created by faculty and staff (see the videos at www.notredamesb.org/fi eld-day). Our music students put on a virtual concert after having put in many hours of practice with our music teacher, Ritchie Gonzalez (see their performances at www.notredamesb.org/music-concert). Our faculty are hosting weekly and even daily Zoom meetings with their students, keeping up the feeling of community that we have worked so hard to foster at NDS. We ask that you continue to keep our students in your prayers as we fi nish the year strong and prepare to start our next school year smart!

Me ha impresionado mucho cómo nuestros estudiantes y maestros se han elevado a la llamada del aprendizaje remoto desde marzo. La semana pasada celebramos un día de campo virtual organizado por nuestro maestro de educación física, Sean Bayer, con contenido creado por la facultad y el personal (ver los videos en www.notredamesb.org/fi eld-day ). Treasures From Our Tradition

Pentecost Sunday Before there was water, there was fi re. Once in a while, a volcano hints at the sizzling magma upon which the whole human enterprise fl oats. Over eons, the surface cooled off a bit, and rain sizzled down for thousands of centuries, fi lling the oceans and sculpting the earth. We Christians can catch God’s glory in a shimmering pool of water, but we can also capture God’s burning desire to fan the tiny fl ames of our baptismal candles into something that will make a diff erence. In Sicily to this day, there is a custom of scattering rose petals down from the ceiling of church on the heads of the faithful, an eff ective reminder of the “tongues of fl ame” descending on the apostles, and a sign that the Holy Spirit still is poured out on the baptized. It is not merely a quaint custom, but a fairly potent sign of what baptism does. An interesting sidebar: if you have traced the Epiphany blessing on your doorway in chalk, Pentecost is the day to erase it. Domingo de Pentecostés Después de la muerte de Jesús, los discípulos habían regresado a su antiguo ofi cio de la pesca para así ganarse la vida, pues no sabían qué hacer. El Jesús resucitado tuvo que pescárselos de nuevo. En su tercera aparición, Jesús pidió a los discípulos que lanzaran sus redes al mar. Estos sacaron 153 peces del mar, número representativo de todas las naciones del mundo. Esta pesca milagrosa que tuvo lugar en Galilea, nos recuerda otra pesca milagrosa hecha en Brasil. En 1716 tres pescadores pescaban en el Río Paraiba y al lanzar la red al agua sacaron una estatua de la Virgen de la Concepción. Después, la pesca fue tan abundante que por poco hundía el barco. La virgencita de 36 centímetros había pasado muchos años en el agua por lo cual había tomado el rico color oscuro de muchos latinoamericanos. La devoción a Nuestra Señora de Aparecida creció hasta que la familia que la había encontrado la dio al pueblo para que en 1745 se construyera para ella una capilla pública.
