Newstudyshowsthis“controversial”therapysendsheartattackandstrokeriskplummetingFordecadesconventionalmedicinehastreatedholisticdoctorswhoprescribechelationtherapytotreatpatientswithcardiovasculardiseaselikewewerekooks.Mainstreammedicinedocsroutinelydismissouruseofchelationtotreatatherosclerosis,thebuildupofplaqueinthearteriesthatcontributestoheartattacks,strokes,angina(chestpain),andhighbloodpressure.Ourmethodshavebeenridiculedandwearetreatedlikepariahbymanyofourpeers.

Well,itlookslikethetimehasfinallycomeforthosenaysayerstostrapontheirbibsanddineonsomecrow.A$30milliondollar,7-yearlongstudythatwasfundedbytheNationalInstitutesofHealth…knownastheTrialtoAssessChelationTherapy(TACT)…hasfoundthatchelationtherapyreducedtheriskofheartattacks,deaths,strokesandothercardiovascularproblemsby18percent(andover39percentfordiabetics)inthosewithahistoryofheartattacks.

Chelationfoundeffectiveforheartproblems

Nowlet’sfaceit,youcan’tgetmuchmoremainstreamthanNIH,soyou’dexpectsomesheepishapologiesaboutnow,right?Thinkagain.Theusualcriticshavecircledthewagonsandgoneontheattackinstead.(WhyamInotsurprised?)ItcouldnothavebeensummarizedbetterthaninanarticlepublishedbyCNN,whichstated,“Inresultsthatarestunningcardiologists,anewstudyshowsa“fringe”alternativetreatmentforheartdiseasewasfoundtobeveryeffectiveatpreventingheartproblems—butthereportissocontroversialevenitsleadauthorisquestioningtheresults.”

Yes,eventheleadauthorisunwillingtostandbehindhisownfindingsforfearoffindinghimselfostracizedbythemainstream.Meanwhile,thepatientswhocouldbebenefittingfromthislife-savingtreatmentsuffer.

“Themostexcitingpartofthisstudyisthattheremaybeanunexpectedsignalofbenefit,”Dr.GervasioLamas,chiefofColumbiaUniversityDivisionofCardiologyatMountSinaiMedicalCenterinMiamiBeach,Florida,andleadauthorofthestudysaidinapressreleaseputoutby

theAmericanHeartAssociation.“Weneedtounderstandwhetherthesignalistrue,orwhetheritoccurredbychance.”

Otherexpertsweighedin,aswell:“Ifthisweretrue,itwouldbesignificant.Itwouldputthistherapyinthesameballparkashighbloodpressuredrugs,ordrugsusedtolowercholesterol,”saidDr.StevenNissen,chairofthedepartmentofcardiovascularmedicineattheClevelandClinic,whoalsodoubtstheresultsofthestudy.

Whetheryoufinditamusingordownrightmaddening,it’ssignificantthatmanyconcludethatapositiveresultmustbeflawedbecauseit’s“alternative.”IwouldremindDr.Nissenthatfordecadesdoctorslikemehavebeenwitnessingfirsthandthatchelationtreatmentsdoindeedreduceplaqueandimprovesbloodflowthroughthebody’svitalcirculatorysystem,includingthecoronaryarteriesthatfeedtheheartoxygenandnutrients.

Let’sstepbackandtakealookatthisstudy.Itfollowedalltheparametersrequiredforaproperstudyincludingthatitwasdoubleblindmeaningneitherthedoctorsnorthepatientsknewwhowasreceivingwhichtreatment.Onegroupof839patientsreceived40infusionsofthechelatingagentEDTA.Theothergroupof869patientsreceivedintravenoustreatmentswithaplacebosolutioncontainingsaltandsugarwater.

Chelationtherapyreducedtheriskofheartattacks,deaths,strokesandothercardiovascularproblemsby18percent(andover39percentfordiabetics)

Andremember,itwasn’tsome“fringe”alternativegroupofdoctorsthatcameupwiththestudydesign.Itwasdesignedandmonitoredbyyourgardenvarietymainstreammedicalprofessionals.

Chelationsafelyflushesawaytoxins

ThetermchelationisderivedfromtheGreekwordchele,whichmeans“toclaw.”Thisreferstothewaychelationagentsbindtoothersubstancessotheycanbeflushedoutofthebody.WhiletherearedifferentchelationagentsthemainoneusedinmedicalsettingsisasyntheticaminoacidcalledEDTA(ethylenediaminetetra-aceticacid).

ManypeoplearesurprisedtolearnthattheU.S.FoodandDrugAdministrationapprovedchelationtherapyusingEDTAasatreatmentforleadpoisoningmorethanfortyyearsago.

EDTAwascreatedinGermanyinthe1930storemoveheavymetalcontamination(fromindustrialproductssuchaspaint)fromthehumanbody.AftertheSecondWorldWarUSscientistsbeganproducingandstoringEDTAsinceitwasaneffectiveagentatremovingtoxicmetalmoleculesformthebody.

Then,inthe1950s,EDTAwasusedtotreatpeoplewithleadpoisoningdevelopedfromworkinginabatteryplant.ItwasalsousedsuccessfullybytheUSNavyforsailorswhoacquiredleadpoisoningwhilerepaintingoldships.

InbothofthesesituationsdoctorsnoticedthatpeopleundergoingEDTAtherapyexperiencedpositivecardiovascularchangesaswellasrelieffromotherailments.Sincethe1950schelationtherapyhasbeenusedonhundredsofthousandsofpatientsandwhileit’sFDA-approvedforthetreatmentofleadpoisoningit’snotapprovedforanyothercondition.Withmoresuccessfulchelationstudiesthismaychange.

EDTAremovestoxicmetalsfromthebody

Heavymetalssuchasleadaredifficultforthebodytobreakdownandexcrete.Leadissotoxicthatifyou’reexposedtoityourbodytriestokeepyousafefromitbystoringmostofthemetalinyourbones.Unfortunatelyitstilldoesendupinothertissuesandyourbloodstream,whereitcanhaveseriousdetrimentaleffectsonthebrain,nervoussystem,kidneys,liver,heart,andcirculatorysystem.

Animalstudiesshowthatleadtoxicityacceleratesplaqueformationinthearteries.EDTAcanremoveleadandothertoxicmetalsfromthebody.Manyholisticdoctors,meincluded,alsobelievethatEDTAcanhelpstripawayunwantedcalciumdeposits.And,asyoumightknow,thebuildupofcalciumonarterywallscanleadtothehardeningofthearteriesknownasatherosclerosis.

EDTAstimulatestheproductionofnitricoxideinbloodvessels.Thisresultsindilationofthearteriesimprovingbloodflow.Thisislikelywhymypatientswithangina(chestpain)noticeamarkedimprovementintheirsymptomswithintwotothreechelationtreatments.Mycolleagueshavereportedsimilarresults.

Chelationtherapyisthoughttobequitesafe

HundredsofthousandsofEDTAchelationtreatmentshavebeenperformedintheUnitedStatesforpatientswithcardiovasculardiseaseandthistherapyseemsquitesafe.Before

startingtherapywithapatientItakeahistory,performanexam,andrunspecificlabteststomakesuretheirkidneyandliverfunctionishealthybecausetheseorgansplaythemajorroleinthemetabolismofleadandothermetals.

Ialsokeepaneyeonaperson’smineralbalancebecause,asImentionedearlierchelationtherapyremovesexcessmineralslikecalcium.Mineralreplacementtherapywithoralaswellasintravenousinfusionsshouldalwaysbepartofacomprehensivechelationtherapytreatmentplan.Infact,Dr.Lamasandhisteamfollowed-uptheiroriginalstudywithatrialofaddingaregimenofhigh-doseoralantioxidantvitaminstotheintravenouschelationinfusions.

Theresultsshowedenoughofabenefitfromthevitaminsandmineralsthattheresearchersbelievemoreresearchiswarranted.Achelationtherapysessionisbestdoneoveraperiodofthreehoursoralittlelongertomakesureapatient’scalciumleveldoesnotdroptoolow.Peoplewithatherosclerosisusuallyrequirethirtyormoretreatments.
