The Theory of Decision-Making
Relativity
–Some Famous Person
“Your decisions are relative to your experiences. There’s no way around that fact.”
If you haven’t figured it out yet, the experiences in your life have a valuable purpose.
There are experiences that simply leave you with a happy memory…
Maybe it’s something like
this =>
Or this… <=
These experiences are valuable. They have a way of giving your life meaning. And if we didn’t
have those memories we’d be nothing more than an empty shell.
But there are other experiences. The one’s that sometimes we may not want to think about.
They are equally important and you probably don’t realize it.
Like many American kids, my parent divorced when I was five. I’ll never forget the way my
Dad’s face scrunched up as he cried uncontrollably.
The way my Mom talked about how their relationship had dwindled away to nothing.
Experiences like that have shaped the way I make decisions about my own personal
relationships.
The way I treat my wife and the way we solve conflict in our marriage is derived from how I
saw my parents handle conflict in their marriage.
These are indirect lessons that we learn and they are directly related to how we make
decisions in the present.
The Theory of Decision-Making Relativity explains how our decisions are relative to our experiences. There are 3 Laws. But first, the
Theory.
“Each action or decision you make is relative to the experiences throughout your life. Each decision is based upon outcomes you’ve experienced either through your own past
decisions or the outcomes of decision made by those around you. The severity of the
consequences (good or bad) is relative to the level of stakes at play. And the impact (of said decision) is relative to your closeness with the
decision maker.”
Law 1: You are the sum of the five people you spend the most time with.
Law 2: The definition of insanity applies.
Law 3: There is no perfect decision—there is only the best you can do with the information
you have at the time.
