Melodic Minor Scales: One Octave

A minor (melodic): 6th and 7th notes = F# and G#

© 2002 Anne Christopherson GRSM ARCM

 In Melodic Minor scales,

the 6th and 7th notes are sharpened (raised) by a semitone on the way up,and lowered again on the way down.

The fingering of A minor is exactly the same as C major!

It is also used in the scales of E, C*, G* and D* minor:

RH: 1 2 3 1 2 3 4 5 4 3 2 1 3 2 1

LH: 5 4 3 2 1 3 2 1 2 3 1 2 3 4 5

Useful tip:

When playing with both hands, your 3rd (middle) fingers always  play at the same time.

This fingering also applies separately to:

 Right Hand only: B minor

 Left Hand only: F minor*

*C, G, D and F minor are "flat" b keys - see separate sheet

In every scale you have to use one note of each letter-name.

This is why we use Double Sharps (    ) here:

Theory of a Melodic Minor Scale

Major and Minor keys are related. Each Minor key has a relative major, and each Major key has a relative minor.

They share the same key signature.

C major’s relative minor is A minor.C is 3 SEMITONES (a minor 3

rd) higher than A.

A minor’s relative major is C major.A is 3 SEMITONES (a minor 3

rd) lower than C.

To make a Melodic Minor Scale, you start on the Minor Keynote but you

use the same notes as the relative major - except for the 6 th  and 7

th  notes

of the ascending scale.  When you go up the scale, the 6th and 7

th notes

are raised (sharpened) by 1 semitone. For the descending scale, use

exactly the same notes as the relative major.

The 6th

and 7th notes push their way up, but they fall back down.

3 examples:Ascending: Descending:

C major: C D E F G A B C / C B A G F E D C

A minor: A B C D E F# G# A A G F E D C B A

Ascending: Descending:

Eb major: Eb F G Ab Bb C D Eb / Eb D C Bb Ab G F Eb

C minor: C D Eb F G A B C C Bb Ab G F Eb D C

Ascending: Descending:

B major: B C# D# E F# G# A# B / B A# G# F# E D# C# B

G# minor: G#A# B C# D# E# Fx G#* G# F# E D# C# B A# G#

*Remember that you must have ONE of each letter name in every scale, which is why we use double sharps (you can’t use “F, G natural, G#” - it

must be “E#, Fx, G#”).
