Culture - communication• Many aspects involved in culture, society and
communication.• Culture difficult to express. (Clifford Geertz ,1973)• Culture is a kind of knowledge that we use in
communication. (Habermas, 1981)
(Habermas, 1981)

4
CommunicationThe way of understanding the objects’ behaviour as a
potential ability to recognize and/or solve problems with the help of symbols (or signs).
![Page 5: Theoretical Approach of Network Communication and Collaboration in Research, Peter ACS](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022060122/55951a851a28ab215e8b4711/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)

Agents - patterns• Objects – understood as problem solvers - are agents.• While other patterns are recognized as symbols (or signs) or raw-
patterns.• Patterns are differences in time and/or space accessible via
modalities of perceptions.
![Page 6: Theoretical Approach of Network Communication and Collaboration in Research, Peter ACS](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022060122/55951a851a28ab215e8b4711/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
6
Communication• Communication rooted in the need of the agents to
recognize and/or to solve problems. • The problem of the agents is a difference between the
desired and therefore aimed state and the current state.
![Page 7: Theoretical Approach of Network Communication and Collaboration in Research, Peter ACS](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022060122/55951a851a28ab215e8b4711/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
7
Communio• The basis of understanding patterns as symbols is
common knowledge.• The agents are participating in this communio.
– Participation Theory of Communication (PTC) (Horányi, 1999)
![Page 8: Theoretical Approach of Network Communication and Collaboration in Research, Peter ACS](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022060122/55951a851a28ab215e8b4711/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
8
Conditional aspect• Communication is not something that can be
recognized as a force, as a process, or as an architectural or structural phenomenon that is independent of the supposition of an agent with teleological goals and with abilities to handle patterns.
![Page 9: Theoretical Approach of Network Communication and Collaboration in Research, Peter ACS](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022060122/55951a851a28ab215e8b4711/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
9
Types of agents• The agent as an assumption of willing power is not just
a possible description of humans• We can have collective-, fictive-, mimetic or virtual
agent concept
![Page 10: Theoretical Approach of Network Communication and Collaboration in Research, Peter ACS](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022060122/55951a851a28ab215e8b4711/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
10
Computer as agent• The dreams from the 60’s showed computers as a robot (human-
like behaviour) • (Lots of research about an artificial intelligence)• Virtual agent concept: We know it is not “real” but we want to
apply the agent concept
![Page 11: Theoretical Approach of Network Communication and Collaboration in Research, Peter ACS](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022060122/55951a851a28ab215e8b4711/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
11
Computers as communication devices
• Most of the popular usage of computers and networks today are not like virtual agents.
• MSN, E-mail, Web, Skype, ....
![Page 12: Theoretical Approach of Network Communication and Collaboration in Research, Peter ACS](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022060122/55951a851a28ab215e8b4711/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
12
E-mail is popular• Len Kleinrock, professor of computer science at UCLA,
former director of ARPAnet Network Measurement Center says:
"...As soon as e-mail came on, it took over the network. We said, 'Wow, that's interesting.' We should have noticed there was something going on here. There was a social phenomenon that was happening."
(Segaller, 1998, 105)
![Page 13: Theoretical Approach of Network Communication and Collaboration in Research, Peter ACS](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022060122/55951a851a28ab215e8b4711/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
13
Communication devices• The patterns could be fixed for the future, transformed in space
and amplified to overcome the limitations of perception. • These architectures created for modification of accessibility of
patterns are communication devices.
![Page 14: Theoretical Approach of Network Communication and Collaboration in Research, Peter ACS](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022060122/55951a851a28ab215e8b4711/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
14
Application as device• Computer network is not a communication device. The
computer has a relatively free universal functionality. • Network (e.g. Internet) + application = communication
device
![Page 15: Theoretical Approach of Network Communication and Collaboration in Research, Peter ACS](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022060122/55951a851a28ab215e8b4711/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
15
Use of communication device• Use of communication device depends on how the agents
understand it.– Knowledge about the structure how the patterns are
transformed, fixed or amplified via the device – Knowledge about pattern accessibility control mechanisms of
the device.

16
Understanding pattern as signWritten text is one of the most important classes of
symbols.• The question of meaning:
– Meaning of words, sentences (Carnap)– Meaning of proposition (Quine)
(Quine)

Scene - context• The sentences can be read as proposition
- The scene gives a context- Persons can be identified

Tools in coospce• CooSpace – not a single tool (device), it is collection of tools
instrumentos:
– Forum– Bulletin-board– Tasks– Meeting administration– Documents (Simple file, web content, or SCORM)– Picture gallery– CooStorage (Virtual USB-key)– …..

Understanding and use of tools • There are several levels of understanding tools
– to know the existence of a tool– to know the way of using it in solving problems
• Experience is important
problemas. • La experiencia es importante.
