The Offi cial Newsletter of the Thousand Oaks Library

During October, thousands of readers embraced the selected Thousand Oaks Reads: One City One Book title, Mary Coin by Marisa Silver. It was the eighth year in a row that our patrons arrived in droves to our programs and discussions, all created to enrich the experience of reading together.

Thanks to the generosity of the Friends of the Thousand Oaks Library, patron participation in our 2014 One City One Book was a gratifying success. The copies of Mary Coin — including 465 paperback, large print, audio formats and ebooks — circulated more than 2,800 times. Approximately 1,750 people attended our concerts, film screenings, lectures and workshops this year, programs which included:

• Two lively music events, both celebrating the deep roots of America’s rich folk music tradition

• An insightful presentation from local farmer Phil McGrath, whose family legacy in Ventura County stretches back more than 150 years

• A series of book discussion meetings, where readers came together, each bringing a fresh point-of-view to analyze Mary Coin

• Classic film screenings that enhanced our understanding of the American struggle during the Great Depression

• Thirty-four local book clubs participated in the One City “Book Club in a Bag” program; many local clubs automatically include the One City selection as their autumn pick

• The annual California Lutheran University Faculty Panel Discussion, where professors offer their unique perspectives and thought-ful responses to Mary Coin

• A presentation of vintage cameras and local history anecdotes from the area’s preeminent photographer, Ed Lawrence

• And the culmination of every One City One Book season, the author event at the Kavli Theatre, attended by more than 700 people

Thousand Oaks Library recently received a $2,000 grant from SAGE Publications in support of the Dog Days reading program. Research has shown that reading out loud improves reading skills and develops fl uency.

This grant from SAGE will allow the Library to give children their own books to take home and will help with the printing of other

special mementos for our volunteer dog owners to hand out at Dog Days programs. Dog Days programs create a positive, non-threatening and fun environment in which reading is facilitated, children’s literacy skills are improved and the love of reading is nurtured. CSUCI Spring Lecture Series

The Thousand Oaks Library and CSU Channel Islands are teaming up again to bring the Spring Speaker Series to the Grant R. Brimhall Library beginning in February. This interesting series presented by CSUCI Faculty is free and open to the public and begins at 7:00 p.m. each evening. The Spring Series includes:

February 12 - The Neglected Pacifi c Theater of the First World War. The global dimension of the First World War even reached the Pacifi c. The German colonial presence resulted in confl icts with Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. At the same time, soldiers from the Pacifi c region were deployed at war theaters overseas. Presented by Rainer F. Buschmann who obtained his Ph.D. in history from the University of Hawaii. He joined CI in 2002 and was instrumental in developing the world history pillar of the history degree at this institution. He has published four books on the history of the Pacifi c.

March 12 - Natural Habitats and Native Flora of CSU Channel Islands and the impact of the Spring Fire. A natural history survey of the habitats surrounding CSUCI has been underway since the university opened in 2002 and over 120 native species have been identifi ed. This talk will provide an overview of the habitats and fl ora and the impact of Springs Fire of 2013, and the ongoing recovery. Presented by Dr. Steven M. Norris, an ichthyologist (studier of fi shes), who has conducted and published research on African and North American freshwater fi shes and desert fi shes. He is co-author/editor of the book, Freshwater Fishes of Mexico. Since moving to Ventura County in 2002, he has been surveying

and monitoring the native fl ora and natural habitats of the Channel Islands campus.

April 16 - Hidden Gems of Latin America. This presentation will provide an overview of several of Latin America’s lesser know but most intriguing cities, with an emphasis on their history, culture, architecture, and other interesting aspects of life. This lecture will be presented by Stephen Clark, professor of Spanish and Chair of the Spanish/Language programs at CSUCI. His area of specialization is Latin American literature and culture, and he has translated into English books by several of Latin America’s leading literary fi gures. In 2013, he led a group of 20 CI students to Havana for a course on Cuban culture.

May 14 - China: The Socialist Market Economy. China has implemented waves of market driven reforms since Deng Xiaoping initiated the concept of the “socialist market economy” in 1978. Today, China is the world’s largest trading nation and second largest economy and has achieved the fastest and longest sustained economic growth that is unprecedented in the history of mankind. The main question is: Will China continue to be a socialist market economy, namely, continue its economic reform without political reform in the foreseeable future? Presented by Dr. Priscilla Liang who completed her Bachelor’s degree in Beijing, China, and her MBA and Ph.D. in Financial Economics in the U.S. She has business and academic experiences in both countries. After teaching at Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino for six years, Priscilla Liang joined California State University, Channel Islands in 2006 as Associate Professor of Finance.

Thousand Oaks Library is proud to participate in Every Child Ready to Read®, a project of the Association for Library Service to Children and the Public Library Association, divisions of the American Library Association. Learning to read begins before children start school. Early literacy encompasses the child’s totality of experiences with conversation, oral and written stories, books and print. From the time they are infants, children learn language and other important skills that will help them learn to read. Developing early literacy skills makes it easier for children to read once they begin school. In 2015, a series of Oakleaf articles will focus on fi ve practices that will help children get ready to read, including talking, singing, reading, writing, and playing.

One of the best ways to promote early literacy in our children, and prepare them to enter school ready to read, is by simply READING aloud to them! Believe it or not, early literacy skills are developed everytime a child listens to a

DemonstrationFor children in grades K-12 and their families.

Saturday, January 17 2:00 – 3:00 p.m.

Join us for a special demonstration for school age children, tweens and teens by local artist and retired Amgen engineer and creator of Origami Math Genius, Bijian Fan!

Origami Math Genius (OMG) is a curriculum of origami math developed for integrating art, science and math in K-12 education. Bijian’s goal is to turn every kid into an OMG. Children in grades K-12 will benefi t from the demonstration, especially older students with more extensive math background and developed motor skills. OMG classes have been taught in local schools, Skirball Cultural Center, Gull Wings Children’s Museum, and with many other organizations. More information on OMG can be found at: http://www.bijian.com/omg.html

story! Reading to children helps them acquire the skills they need before they can learn to read. Reading together increases vocabulary and general knowledge. It helps children learn how print looks and how books work. Shared reading also helps children develop an interest in reading. Children who enjoy being read to, are more likely to want to learn to read themselves.

Help your child get ready to read with these simple READING activities: Make shared reading interactive. Before you begin a book, look at the cover predict what the books is about. Have your child turn the book’s pages. Ask questions as you read and listen to what your child says. When you fi nish the book, ask your child to retell the story. Use books to help teach new words. Books can teach less common words, words that children may not hear in everyday conversation. As you read, talk about what these words mean. Have books within easy reach. Make a special spot for books somewhere in your house. Come to the library often and fi nd new books to make reading fun. Show your children how important reading is by reading yourself. And of course read every day! Incorporating these simple reading activities can help your child get ready to read!
