Istarted Nirvana Systems to develop a fully automated Trading System—a system so accurate, you could turn it loose to trade the markets or have it alert you by cell phone to

interactively place and manage trades. I would call such a system The Ultimate Trading Machine.

The “Software Robot” In 1989 Frank Taucher, author of The SuperTrader’s Almanac, conferred his Product of the Year Award to our Software Robot called KLATU. It had the ability to run other software from the outside, just like a person would do. Rather than reinvent the wheel, I decided to harness the analysis power of programs like MetaStock™ and TBSP™. In other words, I used these programs to find signals and then automated everything else.

The OmniTrader ProjectThe only problem was the programs we were automating weren’t powerful enough. We soon realized we were going to have to create our own trading technology. In 1993 we started the OmniTrader project, based on the Adaptive Reasoning Model (ARM).

OmniTrader is a giant leap forward in automated trading technology. I continue to get letters from customers who are amazed at how much it does and how little we charge for it! But this first version of ARM still wasn’t quite powerful enough for a fully automated Trading System.

I was able to run some experiments and concluded that by applying specific market measurements and building rules using a Genetic Algorithm, it should be possible to determine the probability of a given signal being correct based on specific combinations. We just needed resources to devote to the research.

The Nirvana Club is Born Then an idea occurred to me, “Would our customers be willing to partner with us?” We could create a club, charge a membership fee, and apply the new funding to the development of these advanced trading technologies. The members would receive the products as they were created, and the company would continue on the mission until a fully automated Trading System called The Ultimate Trading Machine was realized.

Since the Club was originally founded, we have enjoyed many successes, with each building on the last. We have applied significant resources to the very difficult problem of finding Trading Systems that consistently beat the market (milestone synopsis presented below). And I am proud of the fact that we are now delivering profitable mechanical Trading Systems to our members.

The Power of ARMOur ARM technology is second to none in the trading community. As the product has advanced, we have continued to release new and more powerful Strategies to our members. We also provide the same tools we use for our members to experiment with. Many members have taken this technology and either created their own Strategies or significantly enhanced existing ones. Granted, not all members want to do this, but the fact that the tools are open to all 2700+ members means our research can move forward that much faster. We have some very savvy people in the Nirvana Club.

Every year, we work to improve our ARM technology. Recently, we added “Dynamic Training” so our Neural Networks could be trained, validated, and tested over very large amounts of data. This year, we unveiled Neural Networks based Multiple Timeframe Confirmation. We have also made many technical advancements, such as the addition of cross-validation network training. The resulting performance gains have been phenomenal!

Artificial Intelligence has been used to improve investment returns by hedge funds and proprietary trading shops for years. But before the Nirvana Club this kind of technology had never before been available to individual traders.

The Club has developed two powerful types of Artificial Intelligence Technology, the Neural Network (ARM4) and Genetic Algorithms (ARM5, which is discussed on page 8). Both are important – let’s expand on the Neural Network first.

Our Neural Network technology was first released to the Club in 1998 and is the cornerstone of our A.I. capabilities. Its primary strength is in finding relationships between indicators that can predict chart movement in the future.

In live trading, the predictions from the Neural Network can be used to identify those Signals that have the highest probability for success. An example of this filtering process is shown to the right.

Our Neural Network technology has continued to improve year after year. We provide a powerful selection of “canned” ARM4 Strategies that can be used “out of the box”. Members can also easily customize any Neural Network by re-training on their own symbols.

Case Study: T3 Power The T3 Power Suite is based on the “Reversion to Mean” concept, generating consistent profits by trading Reversal Signals in pull-backs.

We were able to dramatically improve T3 just by adding a Neural Network from an existing strategy that was trained on the same kind of signal. The first chart shown to the right is for Google running on T3 without ARM4, the second chart has ARM4 applied. You can see how ARM4 only allowed the best signals to get through.

But the real story is in the graph below the charts, which shows how profit per trade increased as the Neural Network Score Cutoff was increased on a list of symbols. Profit per trade went from 0.81% to 2.64% as the NN Score was increased from 55 to 70. This is clear proof that the Neural Network is doing exactly what it is supposed to do—assigning the higher scores to the best trades.

Neural Networks from any of our ARM4 Strategies can easily be “dropped into” any other strategy with a simple copy- paste process. In this way, members are applying ARM4 to enhance plug-ins and other strategies.

In addition to the Neural Network, another powerful tool developed in the Nirvana Club is our Genetic Algorithm.

Neural Networks combines inputs in a “fluid” way, a Genetic Algorithm is based on RULES. A Rule is a collection of factors (inputs) which indicate a strong profit when present together.

As traders, we would like to evaluate 50, 100 or even 200 different indicators to “figure out” which ones combine to create a profitable outcome. That’s a VERY large problem and it’s what the G.A. excels at!

The example to the right is an actual Rule in our GA Funds Strategy. This rule was 81% Accurate with 2.84% Profit per Trade with 148 occurrences over historical data. The Knowledge Base was created over about 15 hours, and has a total of 3,500 rules. And expanded chart of ETF symbol FDL is shown on the next page.

ARM5: Genetic Algorithm

You may be wondering how the Genetic Algorithm can get such great results. The picture to the right represents 6 inputs (real problems can have hundreds.) Our first step is to measure all inputs across all our data. Inputs to the GA can be:

* Technical Indicators* True/False Comparisons* System Signals Multiple inputs make up a “chromosome”. In the picture to the right, each chromosome has 6 inputs each. Each input will have a starting value, like “RSI(14) > 30 = TRUE” Some inputs are set as “X” for Don’t Care, which means their value is not used in that chromosome.

Each chromosome is then tested for profitability across ALL the data, recording average accuracy (“Hit Rate”), average profit per trade (“PPT”), and other statistics for each “match”.

Now we start a “genetic” process of crossover and mutation to hopefully find better results, and the process is repeated many times. Finally, the best Rules are saved to the Knowledge Base.

Each of these advancements is described in detail on the Nirvana Club Web site. The most significant were Incremental Training and the use of Filters when training a Knowledge Base with the GA.

Incremental Training: All Trades are in “Out of Sample” Data!

When Incremental Training is applied, the program uses a prior Training Period to create a set of rules for the NEXT TRADING Period. In this way, all trades are generated in “Out of Sample” data. So every trade you see is one you

would have seen on the right edge. This was used to create the ARM5 Stocks RTM shown on page 10.

NEW Incremental Training. This chart illustrates the Incremental process. Multiple Knowledge Bases are created so all trades are “out of sample”.

Another important feature we added to the G.A. in 2016 is the concept of Filters, like the Trend Filter shown here. Rules are only be generated when the Trending Filter is True, resulting in a much better and more accurate rule set. The Filter concept was used in the creation of the GA Stocks RTM Strategy shown on page 10.
