Gold Award To Chi Fung Winner’s Sharing When I first read the title “Tone on Tone”, the famous painting “White on White” by the well-known Russian painter Kazimir Malevich came to my mind. Immediately I knew that I need to find two objects with similar color while having their own characteristics, and they must blend in with each other. But that’s not enough, it would be great if they can create contrast at the same time. With this concept in mind, I was still not sure what I was looking for. I kept looking for objects until I saw them and I knew immediately...I have found them. To me, they don't just represent two objects, they also represent how I feel about the city. Winner’s SharingThe photo was taken at WesternDistrict PCWA. When I knew the theme“Tone on Tone”, the first thing cameto my mind was the unique culturalcharacteristics of people of differentnationalities.

The women in this photo are dressedaccording to their personal styles thatwere expressed from their clothes, makeup, and accessories. All theseelements are mixed with the tone ofsunset and pallet, which enable theiroverall tone to stand out in the crowd.

That evening when I was on a ferryreturning to the exhibition centre withmy friends, I was still trying to decidewhich photo to submit for thecompetition. It isat that decisive moment that I pickedup my camera and pressed the shutter.

Winner’s SharingThe three primary color at the upperright corner represents a single "Tone",while the image of the Buddhist Sutrasdefines another "Tone".

This resonates with abstractness of thetheme “Tone on Tone”, where theideas of “Colour is no other thantone, tone is no other than colour”and “Form is no other thanemptiness, emptiness is no other thanform” from the Heart of Sutra canstimulate endless imaginations. This iswhy I created this work.

Winner’s SharingThere are moments in life when we findourselves at a crossroad, it is the verychoices we make at these intersectionsthat define who we are.

I reminisce my past as a student inuniversity, recollecting the myriad ofopportunities available and the freedomto seize each and every one of them, transforming them into endlesspossibilities. I am grateful to my almamater, where my passion in photographywas kindled. It granted me a unique wayof telling my own story, and to capturethis beautiful world through my lenses.

Winner’s SharingHuman crossFew years ago, I started a project called“Urban Thoughts”: considering how urbanstructures are monitoring and affectinghuman’s city life. I have tried to show thealienation of individuals who do not mingleinto the stream of people. At last, I took theopposite approach to emphasizing the hustlein the city and how it weaken the existence ofindividuals.

The theme given immediately inspires me thatIntersection is literally a place where twothings meet and cross. I took this pictures at abusy crossroad. It is a spot where every humanbeing has ever stayed and waited once. Theywill look at neighbours and drivers, andeventually will have a chat with strangers butultimately being submerged in the bustle ofthe city.

Winner’s SharingThe theme “Intersection” made methink of a person who was perplexedwhen making choices at thecrossroads of life and thus looked forguidance. I intended to take a picturethat would contain these elements, Itherefore decided to shoot the sceneof “Fortune-telling” at Temple Streetto express this idea through the image.

MeritLee Yin Cheung

Winner’s SharingI like street photography as I can havemy camera in hand and roam innarrow streets to feel the city, and Ifound that geometric patterns couldusually be found in the buildings. Byholding the camera and waiting for thedecisive moment, an interestingpicture of intersection between peopleand the building was taken.

MeritYiu Ka Man

Winner’s SharingIntersection is the point where peoplemeets. In the shopping mall, at theintersection, people met, and parted ina second.

The streams of people are frozen intime with the use of high shutterspeed. The photo is shot with a cooltone to reproduce the indifferencebetween people. Through the Canonlenses, I can get a clear and sharpimage although the indoor lighting isnot strong enough.

The image ofthe portrait in the display window wassurrounded by the colorful lighting. Theforeground lighting, background portraitand created an illusion that eyes of thewoman was looking at radiant view. Then, Ipressed the shutter and captured thisamazing moment.

Winner’s SharingIlluminations has made Hong Kongone of the world’s resplendent cities. The HKCEC and the buildings aroundcreated a unique composition. I haveused the double exposure techniquewhen shooting this picture. I first shootthe clear night scene and then using atelephoto zoom lens with a maximumaperture to blur the image. In addition, the street lights, traffic lights andvehicles’ lights were captured tomake the sky and the buildingsbecome more colourful and radiant.

Winner’s SharingOn the Old Street in Wan Chai, thereare still a handful of radiant neon signsleft on the buildings.

The gleaming colours of the signsshine in the old streets, and seem totell a glorious story of the Pawnshop, which will never happen again.

Pawnshop is a wonderful place thatyou can borrow money using yourpersonal valuables. There are manypeople in the past used their brightgems as collateral for loans to getthrough the hard times.
