• St Valentine is widely recognised as a 3rd century Roman saint who died on 14th February.

• The name ‘Valentine’ derives from the word valens, meaning, worthy, strong and powerful.

St Valentine’s Day

• St Valentine’s Day was first associated with romantic love by Geoffrey Chaucer and his friends in the 14th century as part of the tradition of courtly love.

• By the 15th century it evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love by giving flowers, sweets and cards.
