Hydrography - underpinning the Blue Economy

Hydrographyis the branch of applied sciences which deals with the measurement and

description of the physical features of oceans, seas, coastal areas, lakes and rivers, as well as

with the prediction of their change over time, for the primary purpose of safety of navigation

and in support of all other marine activities, including economic development, security and

defense, scientific research, and environmental protection (Definition & Importance of

    Hydrography-2013)

The theme for this years World Hydrography Day on 21 June,

Hydrography - underpinning the Blue Economy

This theme is intended to provide the opportunity to raise awareness of the importance and

usefulness of hydrography to provide other than safety and to highlight the economic benefits

that all coastal States can deliver through supporting hydrographic services.

The term blue economy is becoming more frequently heard word in the World. The BlueEconomy goes beyond the Green Economy. It is an expression used to describe all the

economic activity associated with the oceans, seas, harbors, ports, and coastal zones (The

Maritime Alliance www.themaritimealliance.org, based onThe National Report: State of the

US, Ocean and Coastal Economies, 2009. ). Hydrography helps these activities. Everyhuman activity conducted in, on or under the sea depends on knowing the depth and the

nature of the seafloor, the identification of any hazards that might exist and an understanding

of the tides and the currents. This work is the most fundamental to develop and sustain the

    Blue Economy.

There are several potential of the Blue Economy. The seas and oceans are major contributors

to the world economy .The seas and oceans covers up 71% of the Earths surface area and

over 90% of the worlds trade travels by sea (International Hydrographic Organization).

Also only some of the ocean resources have been exploited. There is still so much to explore,

with less than 10% of the worlds seas and oceans having been systematically surveyed .Atthe beginning of the 21st century we have higher resolution maps of the Moon and Mars than

we do for most of our seas and oceans. (Blue Economy, hydrographic surveyors,

hydrography,International Hydrographic Organization, nautical cartographers, UKHO,

World Hydrography Day). Hydrographic data provides a wealth of useful information to

scientists conducting many types of research and hydrography contribute to a healthy ocean,

coastal communities and a growing maritime economy.

The seas and oceans, including the seabed and the sub-seabed, represent a vast resource for

food, mineral and hydro-carbon reserves, energy generation, water, bio-medicines, and

infrastructure that in turn create wealth for human population. The Blue Economy is more

than the traditional core activities of fishing, maritime trade and passenger ships. It also

includes, Resource exploitation - fishing, minerals, Energy environmental protection and management maritime boundary delimitation national marine spatial data infrastructures recreational boating

maritime defense and security tsunami flood and inundation modeling coastal zone management tourism marine science

There are some economic benefits that are directly related to the safe, efficient and

    sustainable use of the sea.

The Oceans already provide at least 15% of animal protein for about 3 billion people, aquaculture (farming) of fish and aquatic plants is worth more than $106 billion, the

fishing industry provides livelihood to more than 540 million people

    UN Food and Agriculture Organization

Port economic activity usually generates at least one other indirect job for each newjob. For high tech industries this multiplier effect can reach up to 5 or 6
