Theme Issue on Visual Attention, Part 3: Guest Editor’s Introduction

MARYLOU CHEAL Department of Psychology Arizona State University

WITH THIS ISSUE of The Journal of General Psychology, we conclude our series of articles on visual attention. In July 1999, the first five papers in the series were published. Those included a paper on the contrast of attention with con- sciousness (by Bernard Baars) and three papers that focused on the allocation of attention in the location-cuing paradigm (one by Paula Goolkasian & Mandy Tarantino, and two by Lawrence Gottlob, MaryLou Cheal, & Don L. Lyon). There was also a paper on attention to direction of motion (by Adrian von Muhlenen & Hermann Miiller).

In the October 1999 issue, an additional five papers were published: one on grouping (by Min-Shik Kim & Kyle Cave), one on an illusion of perceived dura- tion (by James Enns, Jamie Brehaut, & David Shore), and three on inhibition of return (by MaryLou Cheal & Garvin Chastain; by Juan LupiBiiez & Bruce Mil- liken; and by Louise Howard, Juan LupiBiiez, & Steven Tipper).

In this issue, there is a study on attentional bottlenecks (by Matthew Peter- son & James Juola). a study of scene inversion (by David Shore & Raymond Klein), a paper on selective attention in discrimination learning in nonhuman pop- ulations (by Thomas Zentall & Donald Riley), and a review and tutorial of response time tools that can be used to study general processing capacity (by Michael Wenger & James Townsend). These four papers are useful complements to the earlier papers and demonstrate the wide range of research being done on visual attention.

The final paper of the series is a critical summary by William Uttal. His sum- mary eloquently melds these papers into an interesting, albeit incomplete, overview of the field of visual attention at this time. We hope that you have enjoyed the series.
