Thematic Unit Description Paper Heather Heikes

TEAC 259-007

I. Unit Context

1. Write a description of the unit theme detailing what the students will be learning.

The students will learn how to write a proper story by using Microsoft word. They

will write the story with proper sentence form and try to write the words on their own. Each sentence will have a capital at the beginning and a period at the end. They will also

be using the computer to create their own bear for their stories. They will have the

knowledge of being able to access the site on their own and create the bear.

They will also be using their creative side by making their very own pocket for Corduroy. They will be learning how to be creative and use their imagination on what

Corduroy would like on his pocket from them. This will give the students the chance to

brainstorm and let their true colors show through their creativity.

2. What is the target subject area/class?

The target subject area will be language arts, but it also ties into art, because of

the different projects.

3. How does this unit fit into the whole learning experience of the students?

This unit fits because it lets the child be creative with their stories and their

projects. It will also give them the chance to express their selves through their stories and projects. It gives the students the chance to learn a little more about each other and not

only that it gives the teacher the opportunity to introduce the students to technology, which will be following them throughout their educational experiences.

4. What is the setting or situation? Describe the classroom as you see it. Include information

on what computers and other equipment are available to the students.

The setting I see is having the opportunity to have the Media Center at least twice

a week. With this it would give us the chance for each student to have their own computer

instead of trying to use the computers in the classroom. The teacher would also have access to an Elmo for the students to use to present

their artwork, but also for the teacher to use to show demonstrations or readings.

II. Audience

1. General characteristics: Describe the learners, including the size of the group, their age,

interests, experiences, and aptitudes.

In my classroom I have 20 students. Each student has their own special way of

about each student and their personalities. The demographics of my class are there are ten

three children with autism and two with Behavioral Disorder.

them? Remember to describe their computer competence.

This will be the first time for the students to be introduced to the Media Center.

Some of the students have computers at home and some do not, therefore I will have to

give them all a quick lesson on how to turn on/off the computer, how to get into theInternet, and how to use Microsoft word.
