In the July issue of the ·_.I!)XgER; John Trester, W6ISQ, raised the question - why doesn at the NCDXC go ori a repeate·r? · He listed various reasons of his own, and th_is led President .W6NAV to set. ·up a committee· to investigate the .'0pros & cons 11

of a. ·:repeater. The foliowi!ig repol?t will consist of "questions and answersn type of analysis, followed by•a i:summary and recommendation.

l'lhat is a repeater? -·" .·.• J. , .. ; Jr·· . ~

A rE?peater i~ merely a receiver-transmitter set-up; the _receivet-receiving a signal on one frequency and transmitting the same signal on an~ther f]:'equenc3"··

What ,advantages ·are there in a FN r epeater over our. present AN: set-up?

- ~The present AN set-up is such that only-those with, fairly, good line-of-sight locations in the Bay Area can coinrnunicate with ·each other. There are others who would like to join in on the net but cannot hear or be heard. ·A typical · example-. would l;)e those living in the -l'farin and San Francisco Counties. They for the most part are unable to hear anyone ··· in the South· Peninsulla area. Also we have members who are outside of the Bay Area (e . g ., W6KOE - .Los Banos) and are ' . completely in · the dark as to the activities going on. It is the purpose, to get more activity from·more ·members from a greater land coverage. With all members con65eritrating thefr dipoles' verticals or beams at the repeater (depending on

FN REPEATER CQl'iJlVliTTEE REPORT (Continued)

the line-of-sight location) there would be po ques_tion as to . communication coverage.

If we are to ha.;e coverage outside member listeners -and possibly more information is passed on the Net)?

of the Bay Area, won'0 t we ' invite more nonQRM on a DX stationbeihg worked (when DX

The purpose of the Net is. to ~ cr~ate bx irlforniat:ion as weiLas other information among mE;>inbers, ·There a:re currently.many non.:member listeners on the AM frequency, and ·our object' is NOT to uvkic)S'w ·· them out, but to enhance DX to all. We may be able to create more interest among non-members as well as members.

What other advantages are there?

. One 9f the 'g~eatestadvantages is 'to have more members participate in giving a: ' DX station ·a contact with a NCDXC member for the California Award, and the best place to be is on FM, where:. the information rega:r-ding a DX station wanting such contacts can be circulated over a wider area th.:1t at ·pre.sent.

For the technically inclined, it was pointed out that a FlVl receiver has a · compls7te· advantl:\g~? · dv:er an Al'1 ·receiver. An AM signal can break squelch at O.J.: microvolts. If yqu increase:. the signal, the noise 'will 'also increase· to a certain point, , normally about 1 to Z ·mici:'ovolts to get full cfuieting. A FM signal can also break squelch at 0.3 microvolts, but it takes only about 0.8 microvolts to get full quieting. Thus one wJll . _not be bothered by. th(l} noise produced by an AN receiver. The Fl'1 receiver 0s squelch will silence all noise · until a signal appears.

'h"hat~are . the dis~dvant~ges of·~ FM.repeater?

The primary disadvantage to the Club and each ' member wanting to get on thee repeater is tn~ cost. It will cost no more that $250 fo~ .. the repeater set-up itself. The cost to each member to get on tho repeater varies. For those who already havE;? Al'1 gear and do not wish to spend more money ori equipment, it will cost them the··least <amount since their gear can be modified for about a couple of dolla:r-s, to :get the.m on ' FM •. As for those who do not have 2-meter equipment I their cost will range from $40 for a used .l'Jiotorola to about '$250 for a used G.E. Progress line (60 watts) unit. It all depends on their individual desires ••• . • .home station, mobile, ol:' both. ·

NOTE: ' It has be.en ind.icated that there are a .. fevi members in the Club who are willing to d011at~ cash and/or equipment towards the set-up of a repeater. This in effect' will cut the ClubQs cost for the initial repeater set-up.

How do· ;-w set .up a repeater and how much will it cost?

Setting up a fN repeater is quite' simple. Al Neilso~n and Don Schliesser have offered to ~e;t the Club up with a complete repeater. The cost of the equipment will be no more than $250 (this includes Rcvr-Xmtr, tower, antenna and a l l other l;tardware. Also, there would be no labor charge i ) .

Who is going t'p maintain the repeater?

A technical committee ' will be formed for this function. Also, it was noted that in·case ·of sev;ere· breakdown there are many qualified technicians familiar with FlVI repeaters in the Ba:y Area who would give the Club 8:ssistance at no cost.

If the -repeater breaks down, would the Net cease operation. u.ntil rop;tirs are · madE3',?

No. The same rig can be used for direct communicatmons without the repeater if such an,_ event would happen. This type of communications is known as 01SimpleX11

operation.-

THE CATS NET - - A little Ybowing Before the New Eitter

Elsewhere in this issue you will read a committee report ·6ri-·tn.e ··pr-oposed. --~ Club -. 2-rne-ter:: .~.FM :repeater .net. Such a net would surely broaden our DX ipfO' .·. · umbrella, n: .. :whit:h,·,is.· the :. purpose-. : :,- · · · . ,.

Ito s like. this • If yofr ~rid your buddies · are working- something pretty good that might be interesting to others, announce it-- or at least don°t keep .it a secret if youQre asked. But - -; ::QUALIFY IT -- like thf s: -- ·- ··......: .. :.::. -- ·

Now, if there is no answer to the first riet.' call,, perhaps . someone hollers t that he needs the 9Q5 .for a new one on CW or SSB, OK ',;;;~ he should have next crack, Then come fellas who need the 9Q5 for a new one on 5BDXCC. : --

But no matter what, the fella who hea.~s the station first woi'ks him first if he wants to and if he can. That 0 s proper. · ·

All right, thE?n.- ' When the rarer ones come along,: why don°t we agree:._to some sort of loose ·priority system to give some ofthe .fellas a 'hetter than ' even break, So --
