Throughout history, women have fought for their equality from serv-ing in government positions, to filling combat roles in the military, and even voting.

Women are continuously making milestones throughout history, and have recently had some groundbreak-ing moments such as running for presi-dent, to becoming Army Rangers.

“During Women’s History Month, we remember the trailblazers of the past, including the women who are not re-corded in our history books, and we

honor their legacies by carrying for-ward the valuable lessons learned from the powerful examples they set,” said President Barack Obama in a proclama-tion for Women’s History Month 2016.

For women in the Marine Corps, it all started with a woman named Opha Mae Johnson. Johnson was the first woman to enlist in the Marine Corps in 1918 during World War I.

“Being a woman in the military, I feel very accomplished and strong,” said Sgt. Audrey Inman, a foodservice specialist with Marine Wing Support Squadron 273. “So many women in history have worked so hard to get us where we are.”

Persistent El Nino conditions will provide a winter similar to last year for the United States. Beaufort County will be wet-ter and cooler than normal. Additionally, there will be a

higher risk for severe weather, including tornadoes and possible

floods. Be prepared for drastic changes in temperatures and

precipitation. Monitor the lat-est forecasts and briefings from the National Weather Service in order to prepare your home and family for any extreme weather. Ensure you take extra precau-

tions when travelling.

Did you know...April 3, 1945: On Okinawa, Marines of the III Amphibious Corps continued to make good progress all along their front, clearing Zampa Misaki and seizing the Katchin Peninsula, thus effectively cutting the island in two. By this date (D+2), III AC elements had reached objectives thought originally to require 11 days to take.

HAPPENINGSn As part of regularly scheduled, routine main-tenance, runway 05-23 is closed until mid-summer. Runways undergo wear and tear when aircraft take off and land. This is similar to the wear and tear placed on roads due to traffic volume. Conducting routine main-tenance on our runways maintains the integrity of the surface and ensures our pilots are operating on the most structurally sound runway possible.

A fair number of women served in the US military during World War I as nurses, clerks, telephone operators, and other office posi-tions, allowing more men to get in the fight.

“Whether serving in elected positions across America, lead-ing groundbreaking civil rights movements, venturing into un-known frontiers, or program-ming revolutionary technolo-gies, generations of women that knew their gender was no ob-stacle to what they could accom-plish have long stirred new ideas and opened new doors, having a profound and positive impact on our nation,” said Obama.

Amelia Earhart broke barriers for women in aviation. Earhart was not only the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean in

1928, but was also the first per-son to fly across the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

In the early 19th century, wom-en like Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony fought a 70-year battle known as the women’s suffrage to get the 19th Amendment passed. In August of 1920, congress ratified the Amendment, granting women the right to vote.

“During Women’s History Month, we honor the count-less women who sacrificed and strived to ensure all people have an equal shot at pursuing the American dream,” said Obama.

Rosa Parks was one of these women when she refused to give up her seat on a segregated bus in 1955, starting the mod-ern civil rights movement. Now, all women, regardless of color, race, or ethnicity fill most jobs throughout the world, including the military.

“Last year, we officially opened for women the last jobs left un-available to them in our military, because one of the best ways to ensure our Armed Forces remains the strongest in the world is to draw on the talents and skills of all Americans,” said Obama.

In December of 2015, Defense Secretary Ash Carter finalized the decision to open all combat jobs to women in the armed ser-vices, opening approximately 220,000 jobs to women.

“I’m very thankful and hum-bled because as a female Marine, I think we sometimes take for granted how hard it was for us to be in the positions we’re at,” said Inman.

All women in the military go through the same training as their male counterparts, includ-ing marksmanship, water surviv-al, and physical fitness.

“We always face the challenge

of how others feel about us be-ing in the military,” said Cpl. Mi-chelle Campfield, a motor trans-port operator with MWSS-273. “But we show that we can do it by proving them wrong.”

According to the Department of Defense website, the United States military is comprised of approximately 15 percent wom-en. Of the more than 200,000 women in the military, around 14,000 are serving in the Marine Corps.

“This month, as we reflect on the marks made by women throughout history, let us up-hold the responsibility that falls on all of us, regardless of gender, and fight for equal opportunity for our daughters as well as our sons,” said Obama.

Opha Mae Johnson became the first female Marine, when she enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1918 during World War I.
