The Hunger Games &
A Dystopian World
Miss Z, English 3
FIRST THINGS FIRST: The Hunger Games is a dystopian novel. “The Lo2ery” is a dystopian story Dystopia: A futuris8c, imagined world, characterized by an oppressed society and a controlling ruling force (a government, the big businesses, a technologically superior group). No such thing as freedom (speech, press, religion, belief…). The society is an illusion of a perfect utopian world. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?! Dystopias, through an exaggerated worst-‐case scenario, make a cri8cism about the current trend, societal norm, or poli8cal system. Ø “The Lo2ery” was wri2en in 1948, aQer WW II. Shirley Jackson found a way to
cri8cize the inhumane treatment of human beings by other human beings, who were each other’s neighbors.

Before we watch the movie…(spoiler alert, cover your ears if you wish) The book vs. the movie: final verdict Katniss’s and Gale’s fathers were killed in a mining accident. Katniss sneaks away into the woods with Gale. They hunt and sell their game to the police or at the Hob. It’s illegal for anyone to be in the woods. They could get in real big trouble… Tesserae are tokens worth a year's supply of grain and oil for one person. If a kid signs up for these, his or her name is entered into the lo2ery more 8mes, therefore increasing the chances of being a tribute at the reaping. People in most districts face poverty and hunger. The Capitol has all the goods, including food. (“We are the 99%!”) Katniss has flashbacks (memories we can see) about how Peeta helped her out one 8me…
QUESTIONS? COMMENTS? CONCERNS?
WHILE YOU WATCH THE MOVIE, keep in mind “The Lo2ery” What similari8es do you find between the two stories? Differences? (Tip: a venn diagram might be helpful.) Describe the rela8onship between Katniss and Prim, and between Katniss and her mother. Explain whether you agree or disagree with what Gale says: “If no one watches, then they don’t have a game. It’s as simple as that.” What are the reac8ons of the other kids as Prim’s and Peeta’s names are called out?
